The rumours within the gaming community say that he is black. But It can't be confirmed definitely because, they have never shown his face. Or really given out his background story. But his character does conform to the black stereotpes (badass) and has a black voice.
With the little information we have we can't say he's white either.
There are alot of Badass white characters. Cloud(FF7) was one of the first Anti-hero characters in videogames.

Well, from what I understood...Master Chief is an android, so I don't think he can be labled as black/white or otherwise.
As far as GTA San Andreas, I think that should be taken with a grain of salt, just about every race on this earth is stereo typed ever since GTA 3, so it's not just black people. I'm not too keen on the N word all the time cause it's just ingorence, but they are also basing off movies that take place in the early 90's in the LA area (like Boyz In The Hood). As far as the GTA series, I don't think it should taken seriously, cause every GTA game is going to be like this, previous ones stereotyped Italians too, just look at Tommy Vercetti, so CJ and "Grove St." aren't the only ones.
As far as Tekken 5 goes, aside from the fact that he's kind of a rip off Blade, I actually like Raven. I like Ninjas, despite his "look" I think he's a pretty strong character.
Don't forget Metal Gear Solid, Ninja was Black/Taiwanese mixed, he was an awsome character. As far as Snake being black, from what I was lead to believe Snake is Japanese or half Japanese. Since Kojima is Japanese, I think he wanted the hero to be Japanese too, since the whole game is really about putting out the "anti-nuke message" which a lot of Japan I think wants to be known for, so ofcoarse Snake is going to have Japanese in him, Vulcan Raven even said it himself. Anyhow, point being, I think there needs to be more education on the fact that we are all the same, just human. I don't think people should be stereotyped unless the game is meant to be for humorus purposes, as where everybody would be. It is 2005, and people are "slowly" starting to get the picture that the heros of this "cyber generation" can't all be white all the time, there are a few games out there now where the hero isn't white at all. (some not even human period) Considering my point of veiw, I'm mixed with both Black and White, I think racism is fuetile and childish. All I see are human beings, and ANYBODY can be a good person or a complete moron no matter where you come from. I know they crapped on the black stereo type in the 80's, I'm not too fond of that myself, but I think this generation is slowly learning that we are all the same. Sure they'll be some bad apples, but it's only the important ones that count. I personally think we're going to see a lot more heros from different ethnicities in games in the future. Don't forget, it's 2005, things maybe changing slowly but atleast they are. But really, take the stereotypes today with a grain of salt, most cases it's to get a laugh out of it.

Up until recently,Japanese have always used stereotypical black ppl in videogames and manga. A friend and I were just talking about that a few days ago. Instead of having a basketball toting fighter like Sean(SF3) we have Raven from Tekken 5 and I think Craig Marduk is black as well. Even in mangas,their black characters are starting to look less and less stereotypical. Bleach has a couple of cool looking black characters; not main characters but less ugly. One Piece has a few cool ass villians who were black also.
First off,some of the points made on this thread is the fact that not even the japanese characters look japanese. They look caucasian. Secondly for ppl that know whats going on can just laugh off the stereotypical bullsh*t; like you and I. But for those who don't really see what's going on might see these games as an actual portrayal of black ppl. much like how the media tends to misrepresent us. And that is what really pisses me off.
But I do understand your point.
I also hate rappers coming out with videogames portraying themselves as the hardest muthaf***az that ever lived. Like Buck-tooth 50cent. Who in the hell does he think he is?

Yep, Sega megadrive will probably be valuable in a near future. That's why I am keeping my PSone.
