i have given up dairy foods including milk - it plays havoc with my skin and i dont feel too good having dairy.
so if i want cereal i need a milk alternative. i know there are different ones - soya, rice.. but which is the best or would you recommend?
also when cutting out dairy - what foods does that include? does it include eggs, because i eat boiled eggs but without the yolk for a protein snack during the day, so should i be cutting those out too?

Hi Soar85......I take Alpro Soya milk and its very delicious!
Although its very low in fat, it still has a rich and full bodied taste of organic full fat milk......Try it and see for yourself!
Oh and its stacked by Tescos......hope that helps!

yep i brought the alpro one today - i had it in porridge and tried it as a milkshake - its fine! dont taste that different to normal milk! i dont drink too much milk anyway - only for cereal but i'll definitley be sticking to soya from now!
i still wonder which out of all of them (rice milk, walnut milk etc..) is the most nutritional for you... i may go google it!
thanks for your recommendation!

| Hubby swears by rice milk. I tried it but didn't like it. I will try soya, though.

Try goats milk. You can get it in full cream, semi skimmed and skimmed. Just the same as cows milk really

Soar:
"porridge"?????
Why does Goldie Locks and the Three Bears come to mind....anyway....
I don't know if you're a male or female but if you're male you don't want to consume any soy products because it'll zap your testosterone away and pretty soon you won't have to choose which milk to by....
Because you'll be making your own.
I'm the only one in my family that can drink milk as an adult with absolutely no problems what so ever.
No gas, not diarreah, no nothing.
They say it's not the whole of the milk that's the problem but just the lactose in it.
Maybe you can try "lactaid"..which is milk without the sugar in it.
Or you can try butter-milk...all black folks can drink butter-milk with no problems.

Both my daughter and I have given up dairy products even goats milk. I prefer rice milk, but soya is good and they do puddings, yoghurts, custard etc. You can also try oat or almond milk.
By the way, has anyone found any soya ice cream or cheese or butter??? I know they have it in the states but l've never seen it over here!

y es you can get all of those soy products in Holland and Barrett or any reptuable health shop. I use the dairy free margarine and it tastes no different to the dairy one. the soya ice-cream dont taste like ice-cream but its edible! i love the chocolate soya milkshakes! (come in small cartons in fridge)

I agree with the person who recommends to stay away from soy if you can. There is so much controversy surrounding whether its good for you or not. I choose to stay away.
Be creative and experiment by making your own nut milks. That way you will know exactly whats in the milk. I've tried making almond milk and cashew milk. It's simple, water with nuts (almonds, cashews or whatever you'd like to try) and blend. Sometimes, I like it a little sweet, (you know how we like sugar in our cereal sometimes) ha,ha, if you like it a little sweet add a little maple syrup.
I do this sometimes and pour it over fresh cut fruit, (cantelope, watermelon, grapes, apples, etc) and add some nuts pecans, or walnuts and eat it like a cereal. It taste great and its a really healthy alternative.
Try it and let us know how you like it.
Blessings,
Nkiru

Recently been staying off of dairy too. Found it's giving me stomach problems, but didn't realise it was that untill I reintroduced it after a detox.
As regards someones comment on goats milk, I seem to be ok with it so far but that isn't the case for everyone. It still contains most of the same stuff except the identical human / cow enzyme (IGF1??) that cow's milk does. Check http://www.notmilk.com for more info (some of it specific to Black people).... some really interesting - (and worrying) stuff on herebut I don't know if I beleive all of this. The site owner seems to have a pathological hatred for milk! But he does quote a fair bit of 'science' on the matter.
As for Soar85 question about what is diary. Anything that comes from or contains milk is dairy. So no - eggs don't count (thankfully).
I've been drinking soya milk and soya protein powder shakes as well. Didn't realise there are problems with it - I'll look into that more, so cheers to the 2 peeps that mentioned that.
The trouble is there is so much conflicting information out there on nutrition. It's a nightmare. I think there are some wide ranging principles (i.e. MOST but not all black people seem to be lactose intolerant) but a lot of it seems to come down to the individual. So it's probably a case of 'suck it and see'. That's why I find the 'all black people can have burttermilk' comment a bit odd. I don't think that can be entirely true. Particularly if it contains lactose.
Anyone have any other tips for a non diary, non soya, non animal (I eat meat but aint into animal based supplements... don't know what your getting) and non expensive protein supplement?? ... talk about having to be specific... I've heard Spirulina is a good source of protein but haven't seen any that is reasonably priced.

DO Not drink the milk of a cow. Check out NOTMILK.COM. It will contain all the info you will ever need to know how much damage this product is doing to people.
Their are so many other beverage choices. Goat's milk is more easily digested than cow's milk. Many people are allergic to soy.
Buy yourself a juicer and drink fresh, living vegetable and fruit juices.
