On Soul Food..

I love butter, eggs, fried chicken, chocolate, sweet potato pie, Kool-aid, red soda etc. BUT my goodness...African Americans love this stuff and it is killing us faster than one could say cornbread! I love this stuff but I had to stop eating it because it is killing me and other blacks from the inside out. The Soul Food that we eat is the left over "slop" that we put together because we ate what the white man threw out in slavery days. (Why do we cling on to things that tied us to our bondage anyway?) The white man probably threw out the leftover parts because it's bad for you. Now...we eat and celebrate this food and wonder why we have the highest rate of illnesses associated with obesity. I am overwieght but not for long. My mind has been renewed and I can no longer disrespect my body with the stuff we call "soul food". I will honor my ancestors but I will modify the food to fit my new healthy lifestyle. Then again..why eat it at all when is what we ate as slaves? We are no longer slaves. Why should we eat as such?

Tell me what you think.

Yes, I have been told that foods such as blackpudding have come about because we were given the leftovers to eat during slavery.

Blackpudding is just blood with a little bread and some seasoning thrown in, especially pepper.  That's what was left over for us after they ate the meat: blood and guts.

I suppose the same goes for '' back 'n' neck '', the left over bones and why so many West Indians like to chew their bones which I do too.

I will have to agree....it's not fair that the foods that we like(love) are just NOT GOOD FOR YOU!  As much as I love the HOMEMADE Mac and Cheese, Candied yams, iced tea, etc., those food are a BIG cause of the obesity problem.  It's not a problem if one eats this in moderation, however many don't and on top of that many do not exercise enough to even get their blood pumping!

No one is saying to quit "soul food" altogether, but there must be a level to where things must be cut in half, or some things taken out altogether.  Just because one does not eat "soul food" does not make them "less black", they just understand that many of the foods that they eat are really not good for them!

Black pudding ---- i thought that was only eaten by white british folk. urgh pigs blood would never eat that. in fact dont eat pork, swine, pig, ham, bacon etc

dont be dismayed about all food that black people eat as some dietry stuff has origins in Africa.

I know there is a message in these post but damn they make me laugh.  I have never eaten back n neck what the heck is that LOL.....and Kool aid ain't that the coloured chemical powder mix you add to sugar (and not the other way round) LOL.....people take it one step further and face the facts obesity has risen in line with Americas influence across the globe.  Look at Asia take countries such as China and Hong Kong which had a history of petit framed people......they are turning their back on their traditional foods for the taste of McCr*p and Funktucky.

I am not excusing anything because I know it will only get worst but America needs more quality control to safeguard the crap that is allowed to go on the shelves in their supermarkets and sold to consumers and unfortunately this shyte is being exported into Africa and the Caribbean effecting our people.  Also its not only down to the food being ate people are generally more lazy and do less activities to burn of calories.

Britian has followed the junk food crazy introduced by America.

Btw eating black pudding thats going toooo far eating pigs blood.....forget it you are too far gone might as well stick with the fat ridden soul food. LOL.

Well I have learnt something from this thread...I had 'blackpudding' down for a white working class food, particularly Northern, along with tripe, cow foot, oxtail and dripping.

Slave food, Poor peoples food, cultures aside what's the difference?

You know there is actually a conspiracy surrounding the food industry stating that they may be putting ingredients in it to make it addictive! That is why I am switching to organic foods because all that added stuff is the killer! Also...kool-aid is a flavor, sugar and water...it's the sugar that makes it bad...I mean...people put loads of sugar in that stuff! It taste good but it's bad for you!
Thanks for the post.

Well, the difference is all those additives in the food we now eat, overhere. My goodness, all the butter, grease and fried foods is crazy when you think about it. Gravy, and whatever else we put on food. Fried Chicken is soul food but is was not slave food. It was invented in the 50's. Well, the food I was raised to love and appreciate...my momma's "Soul food" and supersized servings of it, is bad for me. I still love it but I have replaced the fattening things with healthier choices ie, baking chicken instead of frying it etc.
Thanks for your post :)

clp) in recognition of your renewing of the mind with regard to your diet.

My view on this is that our food is so seasoned in the first place because it 'hid' the fact, during slavery days, that it was stale and abominable. We have taken what is good from that experience and added our culinary creative skills to more healthier and tasty dishes.

I know some people who won't give up the boiled dumplins, water and flour. What is that about
confused3

In my own mind, I think part of it is keeping up with tradition; it reminds of us where we have come from and to not forget what our ancestors went through in order that we might be alive today.

There is also the addictiveness of the number one poison - sugar - that is permeates practically all pre-prepared foods, even if it is raw meat such as pork.

Each time I have visited Florida, I noticed how much choice there was on the shelves when it came to pre-prepared food and how little for fresh. The fresh food was far more expensive than the pre-prepared and the imposter orange juice was sitting in the fridge (why?) with the natural juices.

BTW, I noticed that in Barbados, there isn't one McD's. The reason being that they don't do fried chicken. So there is KFC!!

In defense of Soul Food

Whether it be ham hocks, neck bones, collard greens, black eye peas, chitterlings, pigs feet..............................................  All food can be "soul food" for soul food is more in how something is prepared, versus the food itself.

White people have been eating "soul food" for as long as slaves cooked it for them.  During the various wars in the America, where food was slim pickings, this type of cooking was essential because you had to do what you could to make it worth eating without gagging.

I just had this coversation 10 minutes ago, after watching a white chef cook collard greens with ham hocks.  I explained to my friend, that what we're watching is Southern Cooking and not Black Cooking.

All of these foods are health, as long as you eat in moderation, leave out all of the heavys alt, oil, white flour and sugar.

Many of us are overweight because of the processed foods we eat, from canned vegetables to frozen dinners to man made fast food.  Cut down on the red meat, eat vegetables and fruit at every meal, drink plenty of water and you'll see a difference without exercising.  If you want to feel better, less aches and pains, etc., eat more raw vegetables, cut out refined sugars, introduce whole grains, and you'll find that all those artificial flavours and preservatives have distorted your taste for really good, natural foods and you have more than enough energy to walk, run....etc.

And not once have I mentioned that nasty 4 letter word........Diet.

Didididid somebody say, fried chicken, or ham,  collard greens, macaroni and cheese, canned yams, with some cabbage or some seasoned red rice with some fried turkey sausage in it with some stuffing? Along with some cornbread or sweet roll and some potato salad and rice or bread pudding? I SAY, BRING IT ON!!!!! And I will get a second plate and if its okay take a plate home for later or the next day! Now thats good eating. Let me tell you something with all due respect. My Aunt Liz passed away at the age of 102, my aunt Cle Esther is currently 94, my mom is 74. They have always cooked it, its good and I will eat!!! Im not overweight!!! I lift weights, and am in sound condition. Manas up in Harlem serves soul food by the pound!! They know me really well there!! I think you can eat whatever but it boils down to what do you do afterwards. Yall are making me hungry just thinking about it. Now I'm not talking about eating fatback and pickled pigsfeet or stuff like that. I dont get down like that. But some foods are good and I will continue to get busy!!!

First of all it is not the

food it is the person. What's wrong is nobody wants to run,

sweat, excercise, so the food just does to you what

any other food does, make you fat.

i love soul food such as you have mentioned. it's more than food, its comforting to eat that because it tastes so good and i was brought up on such food. i dont eat red meat, only chicken so its mainly vegetables, potatoes and whatever else.

these meals are created from scratch using basic ingredients - whats better natural food or a low fat ready meal full of additives, sugar and salt (which also tastes like poo!)

as long as you are eating everything in moderation and excercising, there shouldn't be a problem.

I'm glad some of us finally mentioned the E word. It's about exercise. It's not so much the food as the GODDAMNED TELEVISION. And now the Internet!

We need to get back to those all night dance parties/rituals our not so distant ancestors used to have. Ain't nothing sadder than a brother that gets tired after 2 or 3 dances. (I'm talkin' 'bout me).

Anybody know a party goin' on this weekend? Let me know!

The day we were taken out of the motherland was the day we kissed goodbye to natural wholesome soul food. We now eat on a 'damage limitation' basis.

All said that doesnt mean one cant do a good job of selecting as healthy a diet as they can and exercising.

By the way i love black pudding and a dont give sh*t who ate it first. (It must of been the white man as it was Europeans who introduced us to the pig who themselves were introdued to it by the Chinese.)

Hi. I'm relatively new to this site but saw this topic and decided that i would give my opinion because I love my food. Firstly I'm no dietary expert but you guy do realize that the thing that is killing blacks isn't so called soul food but our lack of exercise. I believe that the white man didn't feed our ancestors unhealthy 'slop' because he wanted the slaves to be healthy and strong so that he could get maximum work out of them. It made sense economically. That is why for example so many tradition west indian foods are so high in carbohydrates - Plantain, Cassava, Yams, Breadfruit etc because the slave needed to have energy to work hard in the burning sun all day cutting cane or picking cocoa etc. There is no way slaves could have made it eating what passes for healthy foods these days.

The reason why black people are so fat today is because they still want to eat like their ancestors but they DON'T EXERCISE.

Regarding things like Kool-aid, sodas, chocolates and the multitude of junk food we have today, one can hardly class them as soul food or slave food.

I think AfricanAmerican cusine should be modified, for instance collard greens(called green leafy vegetables) are scientifically proven to be an excellent source of vitamines and nutritian. However foods like pigfeet,chitterlains,oxtails,mac-n-cheese need to be cut down or just plain out.
