Come on people let's REALLY get it together. I am seeing entierly too many black people letting themselves go. Please don't come in here and say, "What about any other race". "I" am talking about the black race. There is not reason that I should hear black women say things as such, "I'm good with mine", "If he doesn't like it, then he can go his own way", etc. I think too many people have taken on Monique's nonchalant attitude of being FAT! It is not fair to ourselves, to allow ourselves get so out of shape. To use the excuses of "it's because of out heritage", is also a co-out. There is not reason that just because you were born into a black family, that you HAVE to continue the unhealthy cooking. Not only the cooking, the lack of exercise is very prevalent in out society. I see gyms built and so very few members in them. There should be no reason a gym should be the local "meat market"!
The other issue I have is that men used to be at least a LITTLE picky in their selection of women. It seems as those MANY black men are just having relations with women just for the fact of having it. Men are just as proned to not exercising and allowing their bodies to fall below standards also. No, before someone claims I KNOW that the standards are, I am not basing it on the "Caucasian height and weight standards". As a personal trainer, I know that "their" height and weight" is no where near ours. As a military member, I know that the height and weight is not fair, yet we still have to stay within SET standards. We as black people really need to step up our health and fitness, and take things seriously!!

On health...
I love butter, eggs, fried chicken, chocolate, sweet potato pie etc. BUT my goodness...African Americans love this stuff and it is killing us faster than one could say..."Soul food". I love that stuff but I had to stop eating it because it is killing me and other blacks from the inside out. The Soul Food that we eat is the left over slop that we put together because we ate what the white man threw out in slavery days. (Why do we cling on to things that tied us to our bondage anyway?) The white man probably threw out the leftover parts because it's bad for you. Now...we eat and celebrate this slop and wonder why we have the highest rate of illnesses associated with overweightness. I am overwieght but not for long. My mind has been renewed and I can no longer disrespect my body with the stuff we call "soul food". I will honor my ancestors but I will modify the food to fit my new healthy lifestyle. Then again..why eat it at all when it what we at as slaves. We are no longer slaves.Attachment: art_dance.jpg (Downloaded 343 times) Last edited on Sunday December 26th, 2004 19:20 by blaqguh

Wow your very passionate arent u!!! but i har wat ur saying. So what set standards are these? accordng to them charts i am CLINICALLY OBESE!!! im 5'1..2, (not gona say my weight!! but i wear uk size 12), but im not obese!! i dont need to lift skin to wash!!!! But these charts really depress me. i wouldnt even say i was overweight, (my main issue is that i feel i need to tone).the problem is is that i am top heavy, so obviously this contributes to my weight. Is there a Black height and weight standard? or should these be disregarded entirely??

As a personal trainer also
may I add that those charts are infact rubbish and other factors like bone density need to be taken into consideration.

to be honest it a little difficult to consturct a program for someone who doesnt want to lift any weights
The rowing machine is probably your best bet for toning the tophalf
However if you want I could wright a basic prog and pm it to ya

Yes, I am passionate about people and their weight. From the same point as another poster, I am also a personal trainer here in the US and it's a shame how many WOMEN you see that are allowing themselves to let their bodies go! You have young girls and young women weighing in at enormous weights and they have the " but I still look good" syndrome. Since I am not familiar with the UK sizes, weights, and etc, I cannot comment on you personally. Now, I am not condoning the HEIGHT WEIGHT charts because I KNOW they are not correct, especially for the black community. There is no way they took into affect the backside or black women, and all other different structures of the black race!!
What I am saying is that people have become so comfortable with the way they look and what "others" say. Yes, there is media hype about looking thin and "model-like", however, that is not right either. In "my" opinion there is no reason a person should want to look like model, their body structure is not sexy AT ALL. However, in "my" opinion, no one should want to be obese and out of shape either. People here in the US have eaten everything within their grasp, complain about being heavy, but don't do anything about trying to get that weight off. It seems like so many are using the "easy way out" of getting surgery. People KNOW they are getting heavier, and when they have to continue to buy bigger clothing, there is a PROBLEM! If you have to continue to purchase larger clothing, and you continue to eat to "feed your habit", then you need help. People are getting bigger and bigger, and are actually thinking it's just easier to DEAL WITH IT instead of doing something to lose that excess weight!

I hear what you are saying!!!!
Before i started Uni, the only exercise i did was walking 5 mins to the bus stop and oh yeah lifting the fork to my mouth, lol.
When i started uni, i enrolled in a gym and attended various fitness classes...safely to say i feel the better for it. Now i try to work out at least 4 times a week.
I recommend exercise for everybody, not only does it make u feel good, it can also relieve stress and helps me study better
...well ive actually slacked now and christmas has umm not been kind to my body , need to get back into the swing of things.
To Cims..
As black_power said those charts are rubbish and are designed for white people. Plus those charts dont take into account muscle mass and bone density which black people tend to have more of. Most athletes would be clinically obese according to those charts but they are clearly not so. I remember in one of my classes we had to take body measurements, me and my friends had the highest BMI's (all obese, lol) of all the class but the smallest % fat. Its fat that is the main problem!!!
Alot of people are afraid of using weights because of fear of bulking up. If you do an intense weight training programme using hevay weights and lots of sets, you will likely bulk up but if u stick to light weights and a suitable programme u should be ok. I purchased some dumbbells last year and i find them really good plus i can stay at home and workout.

well im 5'4 and 11st obese in by the charts size 10/12(u.k) theres no way i intend to lose any weight, cos if I follow those charts i'd be a size 8 and have absolutely no shape, whatsoever, i like my curves, I work out, to keep toned, people tend to be a little shocked when i tell them my weight. I have to say though most of the black men I know work out or do some type of sport. I eat what I like I just dont cook with oil/ fat or use butter etc, seems to make a difference, and I dont feel like I'm depriving myself.

Im trying to loose weight. I went into a shop the other day with my sister. I saw these really nice trousers, but I tried to put them on, they didnt fit. I was soo depressed. My sister is stick thin- shes a healthy weight for her age and height. She was being soo picky about what clothes she wanted and what she didnt want and I was standing there thinking "If I was your size, Id be taking everything"
Ive always been a chubby girl but looking back over my photos, two years ago by stomack wasnt big. I was a size 12 now Im size 16. I cant find anything to fit me. For work I have to have size 18 shirt to fit my bust and even that is tight. Im just soo fed up.
Now I know that Im overweight. Ive put on so much over the summer and over the last year. Ive put on ten pounds since the summer and I need to loose it. In totall two stones over the year and a half. Im 3 stones over weight. I've been trying to cover it up for ages and not show that I care. but in truth, I care a lot. My moms always going on about my weight and how at her age she wasnt the weight. She thinks I dont care, Ive said that to her many times that I dont. But deep down I do. Ive not eaten crisps or chocalate for a week and for me thats a record. I eat so many. Ive done a bit of exercising but I know I need to step it up a bit. At the momemnt Im a size 16 but Id love to be size 10 by my 18th birthday which is in August. I really want to acheive it.
My friends are helping me which is excellent and helping to keep me on target.

If you want a little advise, let me know, and I will get you on the right track! It's good that YOU want to change your appearace, but it is going to take LONG, HARD work, so if you get discouraged very easy, then you need to throw that out of the door the minute to put your mind to losing weight. There will be so many days that you will not feel like going to the gym or working out, and you have to force yourself to do it. You cannot allow laziness to consume you, you MUST beat it! If you want any assistance, send me a note, and I will give you a few pointers to start you out!
