We recently flew from Antigua (overnight) to the UK in the most cramped and uncomfortable conditions I have ever experienced; no leg room, reclined seats in your face, etc. many people disembarked with huge swollen ankles and leg stiffness.
Since this flight we have both experienced recurring problems of painful knees especially when sitting for long periods.
Has anyone else experienced this type of symptom? Or other prolonged symptoms from traveling in economy class on a long haul journey?

| I haven't experienced any probs like that, but u should go and see a doctor asap. I thought all the flights u go on now show u how to do exercises in ur seats? I was in an airplane like that doing 3hrs each way to and from Crete, I thought that was bad enough. They showed us knee lifts, rolling ur ankles in a circular motion, they even showed us arm excercises. I really thought it was common practice now as DVT is serious business. Get urself off to the doctor quick time.

Thanks for your response.
We were shown the foot exercises etc, but as it was an overnight flight we had to take a kip - that is when the damage was done. 6 months later we both still get uncomfortable knees. I don't know... I guess if it gets worse will see a doc.

| So you've had dis problem for six mths and u don't feel like u should have seen the doctor already? You are joking aren't u? What was u waiting for, christmas? Well u have another 14 days to go, thats if u haven't turned into a cripple by then. You could have a form of DVT, fluid on the knee, arthritis, anything could be wrong. Are u really prepared to sit there and wait for the pain to get worse?

| Everytime i fly my feet get swollen feet it has been happening since my teenage years. It gets so bad that most times i have trouble putting back my shoes on. They get to normal within a day though. But again this is not just restricted to flying i remember getting swealing feet during my university days while spending long hours on the desk at nights. My Gp then told me not to worry. Last edited on Monday December 20th, 2004 22:39 by flow-unclever

| For every two hours of flying you must get up and walk around.I've read of people dying of blood clots for non-movement.

I do about 3 12 hour flights to Asia about every 2/3 months and as my employer is too tight to pay for Business Class, I have had to find a way to avoid DVT!
Like Burning Spear said, you should get up and try to walk around every 2 or 3 hours, avoid alcohol as this will make you sleepy and therefore less likely to get up.
Take an asprin before you start the flight as this has blood thinning properties and is likely to help avoid the clotting that leads to DVT. Drinking lots of water also helps, not only for re-hydration, but also because it makes you want to go to the loo alot and this keeps you up and about.
Finally, I ALWAYS make a point of requesting bulkhead seats (where people with babies usually sit....sort of looks like a chimney breast), exit seats or aisle seats. This guarantees more room and freedom so you don't feel like you are disturbing anyone (being REAL friendly to the checking-in staff is useful for this).
Failing that, travel Business...
