Does anybody know why 2 of my friends have just paid £6.40 (a standard preascription charge or something) for the exact same malaria tablets that my chemist wants to charge me £80 for?
How can I get around this? Shall I give them my prescription to go and try and get them for me?
Also is it right my GP charges me £10 just to give me the prescription. Ie just the bit of paper?Last edited on Wednesday December 8th, 2004 22:44 by Nick

Ok now this really sucks. Made a few phone calls today. Do you know why I have to pay the full cost????
Because I am getting a private prescription. Why can't I get it on NHS.....because apprently the area I live in, if I can afford to go away I should be able to pay for the tablets!!!
So what about all my friends and their family I am going with, just seems cause they live in London they get about £140 worth of tablets for £6.40
Now I don't smoke, drink or sleep around and yet I still have to pay god knows how much every month towards the NHS, which I don't think I ever made a claim. Yet what do I see smoking patches and STD stuff all free. Whats going on!!!!
I'm gonna go in on Monday and see if I can take the nice sad poor student approach, considering I have already paid £40 for a first batch of tablets that made me go crazy. Else if that fails I will try a more persuasive method.
Watch this space!!!!

| I dunno, I hate the NHS now. When I come back I'm gonna try and get as many free Nicotine patches as possible and then sell them on Ebay until I get my money back.

@ Nick its called the NHS postcode lottery. Different primary care trusts can decide what treatment they want to subsidise. And I think it also depends on your GP. If you have a nice one then they may write you a normal prescription. Somebody told me that each GP gets £1000 per head for their surgery, so I guess they're just trying to hold on to as much of this as possible .

I have just back from a couple of weeks in East Africa and this is a problem I have to deal with every time I head out there. What I do now is I wait until I land out there and head straight to the local pharmacy/clinic and pick up some tabs there (one a week). It is cheaper and more effective that the Larium laced tabs you would get on the NHS. When I went this time, I met up with a friend of mine who was in Africa from the US for the first time. He had been prescribed $200 tablets and been told to take 2 a day. My man was having hallucinations, hot sweats, a loss of appetite-to the point he wasn't enjoying the trip at all.
Turns out that he could have just taken one a day if that...
My theory (right or wrong) is that the tabs you get here are often tested on rats and not in real life situations. My advice is to wait until you get there and get something as soon as you arrive...there is a slight risk with that but....
(BTW, I was told that for the 2 weeks I would need a tablet a day but one each side of departure and return-at £12 each...heyyal no!!(
Just my 2 cents....

| Well. I bought the tablets the other day. Shopped around a bit and got them from about £60. Still a lot but hey. And these are much better than the old ones. No side-effects so far. I think next time I go, I will get my friends to tel their doctors they are going for an extra week. Combined they should have enough spare tablets to give me my correct amount.

| Or you could get some when you are out there and stock-pile them for use the next time you to a malaria zone. I am still a strong advocate of getting them at the source from people who have to live through malaria as opposed to textbook medicine.
