Has anyone ever considered therapy or Counselling to keep the mind healthy?
I mean were told on the regular to keep our body healthy and exercise but what about the mind.
I ask becouse lately iv been feeling down and having really bad mood swings and the reason being becouse i bottle things up and dont have a release from tension and things that happen, so im thinking about seeking some support with this, so it doesnt develop into anything to nasty.
Does anyone have any experiences ?

[ Hi Jus_Me,
I believe everybody should have counselling @ some point in there lives. I have not been yet, but have concidered it. There is a stigma that if you go for counselling or therapy, something is wrong with you, but as you said you want to release a lot of stuff that is bottled up. I have a few friends who have been and they said it helped them, so why not. Or try talking to a close friend, it works for me.
Peace.Last edited on Thursday November 25th, 2004 20:33 by Kai

| I had councelling afer a nine year depression. It really helped me to get things out . I too bottle things up and never talk about things. But councelling made me realize that there was some stuff i didn't even REALIZE i was bottling up. It truly helped me. See your GP for a recomendation. Good Luck! (PS there are different kinds of councelor. Mine was a "Humanist" who believed that people had to discover their own problems and take control to change things etc. Personally i think i would have benefitted even more from a more cognitive approach to change my way of thinking. If you do go to your GP ask what discipline the councelor follows. There are many. I know a couple because i did a level psychology. If you go privatley you can choose whichever one you think is good for you)

U R welcome just me Depending on where you live, you shouldn't wait too long for a referal. Don't think i waited very long. But because it was NHS they designate you about 6 sessions of 1 hour each. If your issues cannot be resolved within those sessions they will make you continuous appointments. But this may be different according to where you live. I personally needed more than six sessions, and i think my referal might have come so quickly because i had been depressed for nine years and i was relatively young at the time (this was the year before last, or possibly early last year, my chronological memory is really bad!)

worthwhile for sorting out your mind...
...your doing the right thing by having counselling/therapy...
....had it on a couple of occasions
...I would make sure you do a lot of research before you choose a counsellor...as some people may have the qualifications but they are not necessarily good at their job...
I studied counselling psychology...still have to complete the entire course....
Just bear in mind that they are only their to help you help yourself...they cannot give you direct advice about how to solve your issues....
if more people made the effort to explore the way that their mind...
...my preferred methods at the moment are hypnosis and meditation, and self relection...

I'm studying to be a counsellor, it can be very benifical but you have to find the right therapist and the right type of approach there are many different types of counselling methods.
Wouldn't advice the Nhs. But remember there are a lot of crap counsellors out there. Do your research as Free said.
If you want any info on types of therapy I'm here.
It's really helped me as Free says you have to be willing to look into yourself counselling isn't a cure its support and guidents, the way to deal with your issues is through self awareness.

A very eminent psychologist who trained me many years ago in psychotherapy told me something I will never forget. He said that only two types of people ever walked through his office door seeking help. The very brave and the very intelligent. Its true. You have to be both to realise you have a problem and be committed to solving it.
Years ago people had more time for each other and there was what we call "The kitchen table therapy". Friends and family members would get a lot of problems aired over a cup of tea and a chat.
Seems nowadays not many of us have much time for each other, to listen. Listening is one of the most important skills anybody can develop. The most popular people I know are all good listeners.
So I would have to disagree with the notion that those who seek counselling are weak. At the moment I;m counselling a Tsunami victim who has lost her husband, three year old, new born baby and Mother in the tragedy. Far from weak this lady is one of the strongest people I ever met. I bet I would crumble if I were in her shoes. It humbles me every session we have together.
I would encourage anybody to seek help who feels they need it. Dont be embarassed to reach out to another soul. I agree that a decent therapist is needed, there are many out there who are sub-standard.

@ All
I was having a likkle joke... it was late an all that and my sense of humour is such that i found Athaba's comments amusing...
...I don't truly see someone seeking, needing or having councelling as being weak, quite the opposite... I've been having councelling for a while now and i loves it... I know it has made me a much stronger person than I was, and that my sanity was saved and that's not me being dramatic (although i often am, terribly!)... before I started councelling, I was physically not right - I had a weirdy rash that was diagnosed as ezchema (sp?) and an almost constant headache that not pain killers or other remidies could shift... a couple of months into councelling and I'm back to being my previous supa-dupa fly self... no more rash... no more headaches... and an arsenal of new tricks up my selve to ensure i generally cope better with the things that were stressing the hell out of me in the first place... actually, thats not quite true... councelling has made me even more supa0dupa-fly than before, and trus me, I've been awesome from time!... ...
...I didn't mean to cause offense or upset and should have probably thought more about the potentially vulnerability of peeps reading the thread and all o dat... soz like... a jus a likkle joke me did a run...
...good mental health wished for all

@MB - your diagnosis makes more sense than my doctors did!... I was given all sorts of creams and potions but nothing did anything really until I saw the councellor and then within weeks the improvement was incredible... It amazes the extent to which psychological stressors and issues can manifest in physical symptoms... that said, I was and am still grateful that is the case... I now pay much more attention to what's going on with my physical body knowing its a pretty good indicator of whats going on internally...

Weekly counselling sessions are complusery for my diet plan. I swear it was the best thing I ever did for myself. It benefitted me even more so than losing the weight did.
It made me want to take it that one step further and go for one on one counselling. I'n my opinion, its not for weak people either because you have to be string to recognize problematic area's within your life.
