Hi,
I am off to Ghana for christmas and new year. I need to get some Malaria tablets. I have been recommended Malarone, Doxycycline or Mefloquine. Malarone will end up costing me about £80 for the 2 weeks, but apparently it has very little side effects. Where the other 2 the cost is nearer £20 but with potentialy more side efetcs. Just want to get a bit of a personal review from some people to see if anybody has and good info. I know it says that they cause side effects, but how common are they?

@Nick
All maleris tablets compose of Tetracycline group, the side effects is mainly stomach cramps and maybe feeling tired but most importantly the side effects are not life threatning.
BUT
each country requires different type of anti- maleria, therefore it is important to ask your pharmacist since they have updated regional requirment of anti-malerias. This is very important to get the correst one for the country. I would say even MORE important than side effect issues. Trust me my dad is a pharmacist.
Enjoy your holiday

Totally agree. The 3 I listed where ones the nurse gave me, which I have confirmed via private research are all equally effective against malaria in Ghana. I just wanted a personal opinion to if was worth splashing out an extra £60 for the chance of less side effects.
I mean how bad can they be??? Is it just a continueus feeling of sickness or will it just be now and again?

@Nick
Now I will try not be biased
As you understand all anti-malerias have the active Tetracycline which interupts the life cycle of the mosquito
So yes you are paying extra only for side effects
The general side effect is a bit like stomach cramps like Dehli Belly ( okay okay Diahorria pain), NOW they do not all show great discomfort, again it all depends on the individual and how their body reacts to the drug, so you might be the unlucky one that will get stomach pains that will blow your mind off
But then you might not
Studies did show Malarone although showed no side effects of stomach pains , but instead "ahem" pshycotic tendancies, BUT dont panic that is again on a small percentage.
I tell you what
Since you have to start taking your anti-maleria tablets 3 weeks before travel, that might give you time to change brands, if the side effects is unbearble.

Hmmm ok. Thanks for your help. I am swinging slightly towards Malarone, even though its nearly 4 times the price I don't want to take risk of being really unwell. Since this trip is probably costing me well over £700-800 before I even get there, and that dwarfs £60 extra worth of pills.
Not meaning to question your medical experience but as far as I was aware it was Mefloquine that had the psycho effects and not Malarone, which has only recently been available in the UK.
EDIT:
Ok guess Mefloquine is definetly off the list:-

@Nick
No problem about my medical experience, I am only an undergraduate in Pharmacy, that is the info I got during my work experience at the pharmacy.
Basically
Malarona>Mafloquine>Doxycycline
<.................................................
Pychosis
.................................................>
Stomach Cramps/ lethergy
basically they all show levels of side effects , but the strenght of the side effect varies depending on the drug
Nick , I think you are in a panic
millions take it, BUT not get sued I have to include worse case situation.
Simple takethe drug 3 weeks early if you see side effect, stop taking it and change brand, but the problem with that by the time you start the new brand you might be on the plane. Also if you was born in a tropical country then you have greater affinaty for anti-malerias to work even if taken late.
Just take it first

Yeah, I was in Africa in 2002 for Christmas and New year. What I did was a little bit differnent. I lived in Africa till '98, i didn't panic at all. Also, knowing that the raining season in Southern Nigeria is between April and October, meaning less mosquitoes in December and less chance of getting malaria. But still I had to take something, I got to Nigeria first before I went to the pharmarcy there to get my Malaria tablet. So I used mine there, it depends if you haven't been to Africa for a long time, then it is better you use your pills here.
I would suggest you ask your friends if you have any that has been to Ghana recently. Thankfully the tablets I used gave me no side effect.

I'm not too worried about catching Malaria either. The rain season is very similar to what you stated and where I will be staying is right near the coast, and that area has something like a single digit malaria prevalence figure.
I have never been there before so I think I should get them here. Do you remember the type that you took?
