I have eczema, I was given betnovate cream.  I recently went to hospital to have an allergy test, the dr told me to use the cream only when the eczema flares up as it is steroid based.  She said my eczema is in remission, it doesn't itch, it isn't dry and scaly, but I am left with dark marks on my skin, which does show up a lot as I am light brown.  I had eczema as a baby but it went away, it came back as an adult due to stress, but the dr did give me a blood test to see if I had a reaction to wheat, dairy, cat's hair etc.  She also told me to keep the area's moist so instead of using cocoa butter, which tends to absorb into the skin quickly I now use baby oil.  I think going away on holiday and de-stressing myself has helped, but not everyone can do that.  I am concerned about the marks and whether they will fade in time or stay there, so I have changed my diet, I am eating much more healthily now.  I'll see what happens with the marks in the coming months, if there is no improvement then I will go back to the dr to see if anything can be done.

Would you consider Calendula oil rather than baby oil which contains liquid paraffin?  I've understand Calendula oil is better as it's natural rather than baby oil which is synthetic!

My legs are patchy and its really dark but i think thats because im too self conscious to show them and thats why the process is takin longer.

TO ALL

My daughter suffered from an acute atopic eczema. It really tore at my heart as she was suffering badly with the skin condition. The rashes were raised dry and painful, they caused her to itch and inturn they rashes would weep and bleed. I consulted with the GP on numerous occasions always to be sent back with hydrocortisones and other such creams including Betnovate. I found that Betnovate had no effect other than to cause noticeable uneveness in her skin tone and Hydrocortisones (steroid creams) not only thin the skin but also can have a bleaching effect. My daughter was in pain and constant discomfort and i was at a loss as to what to do...i tried alternatives some as vitamin e oils and preparations, coco butter, olive oil, you name it we tried it. we kept her away from all dairy products.....risky as she needed the calcium and proteins.

I then realised that the drs were treating her as they would  the general public, as if she were a white child. In reality black and mixed race skin is different from white skin. her eczema was not like that on white babies..it was far worse as i guess black skin can be naturally drier. so i insisted that the dr referred me to a dermatologist as our situation was dire. after continually requesting and arguing...it took for me to take my daughter in while she was bleeding from her itching to make the dr see sense....we were referred to the dermatology dept at our local hospital.

My daughters skin was looked at and they sent out a specialist to pay us a home visit. the specialist arrived armed with a huge bag full of creams ointments and preparations for us to try. she also reccommended that we bandaged the mainly affected areas, arms legs and torso at night in treated bandages to seal in moisture and prevent her itching and harming herself. after a a few months it cleared up and she doesnt have a single scar left on her body and although the eczema arises every winter we know how to tackle it! my advise to anyone is if its really bad see a specialist!!!!!!! and the following:

1. Do not let soap anywhere near your skin!!! use bath preparations like OILATUM! stops itching and moisturises.

2. Go easy on steroid creams....only use if if you have to

3. Cover yor skin from wind, central heating, extreme heat.

4. Use aqueous creams and a good moisturising ointment...we used Neutrogena for extremely dry skin.

5. Re apply cream as often as you can.

6. DO NOT USE BETNOVATE!!!

7. some sunshines goes along way for black skin...encourages your skin to produce natural oils.

i hope it goes well!

I don't use soap on my body, I use radox shower gel and it doesn't irritate my skin.  If ur gonna use soap then the Simple range is good.  Also when I have a bath I do not add bubble bath, I just have plain water or I may add bath salts.

3. Cover yor skin from wind, central heating, extreme heat.

I would say to be careful of the material u wear as well, the majority of ur clothes should be cotton.

6. DO NOT USE BETNOVATE!!!

Betnovate is the only cream I have used, as a baby and as an adult.  There are different types of betnovate creams, and it did help me when I started scratching and making the affected areas sore.  The only thing it isn't doing is helping my dark marks fade

7. some sunshines goes along way for black skin...encourages your skin to produce natural oils.

I agree, I went to Crete the other day, all I used on my skin was baby oil and cocoa butter now and then.  I was able to lay out in the sun without a problem, and i do believe it helped to heal my skin.  the fact that I wasn't stressed would have helped as well.

Ok, make sure you check the ingredients, should be ok if it's H&B.  Check this website

locs4life.co.uk

Here is an excerpt from her website re: oils

Calendula {calendula officinalis}
Oil is obtained from the flowers produced by ther plant. Good for dry skin conditions, sore scalps and varicose veins.

Carrot {Daucus carota}
Oil is obtained from the root of the carrot plant. Rich in beta-carotene and vitamins A,B,C,D E and F. good for healing scar tissue, soothes itching, and aids dry skin, psoriasis and eczema

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

My 2 yr old. goddaughter suffers from eczema.  My best friend took her to several doctors. She's been on creams.  My grannie recommended oatmeal baths which helped sooth the itching and almond oil.  Folks were mention shae butter so I told my best friend.  She'd tried everything else so why not this--it worked wonders.

Have you guys thought about using SHEA BUTTER?  Get the unrefined kind and mix with a little almond oil.

What the hell kind of medicines are they giving you all over there? I stopped drinking Milk and most of mine cleared up, a Black dermatologist said cows milk inflames eczema and asthma. Since I stopped drinking it I've been fine but when I did have issues I use Eucerine and Hydracortizone cream .5%.

Just recently, i suffered from a severe case of ezcema, i didnt even know i had it. it does run in my family bad, and i have alwyas had sensitive skin.

It started a little before christmas, just a small patch on the left side of my face near my jaw line. Then for some reason probably stress and poor diet, it spread, and I mean spread! Both sides of my face were covered, my neck, cheeks and it extended up towards my temples and on to my browline and forehead. I was distraught! I carried on with my daily life though, I had to, now and again I joked I had leprosy, now i know that joke was in poor taste..i wouldnt wish it on anybody...

I attended the dr's, who gave me hydrocortisone, regrettably i didnt read the active ingredients thoroughly enough and ended up with reactionary vitiligo! Then he gimme sum wack cream called daktarin, that just made my face peel and it stunk like rotten flesh!, then he gimme one next on, cant memba name and it seemed to clear it up, abit.

I demanded to be referrred to a dermatological specialist as a matter of urgency, he sent me to department of dermatology where they looked at the rash and decided I had a auto-immune disease! I asked for a second opinion and they then decided to send me to another specialist hospital for patch allergy testing. I have my appointment in June.

I have found bathing with Aveeno Oil very good, not sure where you get it,I steal it from my mum...hehe...dr's I think. Then washing with Dove soap works for me, I also am using an oil called Bio- Oil which i got from superdrug £9.49.It really seems to workand smoothen out my skin tone. I also cleanse, tone and moisturise with Tea Tree Oil products from the superdrug range, they seem to work because of there astringent and antispectic qualities. Ive just spent £50 on Mac make up(never worn make up before!), to cover the dark (and light) patches i have on my face, and it works a treat!

I just give thanks that im getting specialist help and it wasent worst, cos sum people are in wheelchairs and wake up every day smiling. To God, i give all the praises, I love my life, even if its...patchy!

Are you lactose intolerant? When I stopped taking milk, ice cream, cream ect mine cleared up, I had 70% of my body infested with the rash. I first used eucerine, kick the Cow products and have been fine ever since, going on 17 yrs now without flare-ups.

Man kill you guys kill the doctor ish. Most of that stuff they give you is just a gunk to soften up your skin and something to stop you from itching.

If you have Ex real bad ask him if what ever he gives you has steroids in it. This will help your skin heal from the deep scratching you have did to it and the complete dryness that you have as well. You will have to eat because actually it will cause you to be a little hungrier than normal.

Once it heals in the future before it flares up and I am sure you all know your trouble spots, spread some PURE aloe vera gel on the spots. Aloe is probably in ever skin softening product on the market because it is the best skin moisturizer on the market and it is NATURAL.

I do this to my kids. When they start to flare up, I have then take a good shower or bath so that their skin loosens up and before it can dry out, I put Aloe on by working it in circular motions over a small area for about 30-60 seconds. This reall works it into the skin. Sometimes I cover it with a layer of vaseline to retain the moisture a little longer and we have not had a major flareup in over 3 years.

I know this has worked for my kids, so you may want to try it out. Hydrocortisone only relieves the itch for a little while but it really is not meant for Eczema at all after trying it with my kids. Either that or have someone tie socks on your hands to keep you from scratching LOL

I'm not keen on wearing a skirt unless I'm wearing knee high boots.  Cropped jeans are fine, but if it gets too hot for that then I will bus a skirt.  In saying that my arms still have dark patches and I feel no way to wear short sleeved and sleeveless tops, so I'm not quite sure why I have a problem wearing a skirt confused3.  I don't care if people wanna stare at my arms or legs, if they are brave enough to ask me I will tell them what it is.  But anyway I'm used to having dark patches on my body and thats all that matters.  What has helped me is 3 things I got from the dr: fucibet for really bad flare ups, cetraben emollient cream in place of cocoa butter and oilatum gel to use in the shower.  These have all helped to keep the area soft and non itchy.
