I increased my running (treadmill) to three days a week last week and my right knee was really painful.

So today after work I had a Chinese massage and acupuncture concentrated around my knee area and it really feels much better…. I didn't think it will work for sports related pain but it did.  I definitely recommend it.

Sports massage at least once every two weeks is definitely a must if you work out a lot….

Hmm!

Jogging - Ok if you've got a high boredom threshhold, ok if you don't mind premature aging caused by the free radicals you unleash into your body, ok if your only objective is to be able to jog a couple miles.

If you want to change your body shape, if you want your muscles to ripple, if you want to burn fat at an accelerated rate, if you want powerful muscles that look good then -

sprint & weight train

Yes

Run fast - as fast as you can for a series of sprints.

Sprinting is far more thermogenic (fat burning) than jogging.

Look  at the physique difference between sprinters and long distance runners.

________________________

Skip - build up to three minutes non-stop skipping. Gives an almost total body workout.

Weight train - whether male of female intensity is key.

Don't mess about 2lb dumbells - lift near to 60-70 % of your maximum for reps.

Don't waste time on treadmills, steppers, areobics or other gimmick style workouts.

These are useless in the real world, I know people who people say they spend an hour on a treadmill - take them onto a track and it takes them 1 hour to do 400metres.

Remember 400metres should take less than a minute for most reasonably fit men.

It's about body composition not body fat indexes.

You could weigh 7 stone and have body fat percetage of 50%. You're simply a skinny fatty - not lean.

You could weigh 250 pounds with a body fat percentage of 6% - You would ripple.

Recap

To change your body shape -

Stop jogging - start sprinting

Skip

Weight train with intensity.

If you aint sweating and breathing heavy at the end of your work outs - you are not going to see any changes in your body.

The difference

                  Power                                                   Puny

RunFAST

thanks for your replies..

anyways yesterday i couldnt bother to run maybe today...well seems that I am not alone in this but i believe that marathon runners amaze me with the stamina and endurance that they take..on tuesday when I went to hit the road so many girls were passing me like a baby but someone told me its more about 90% mental while 10% energy, not sure about this but i dont feel tired anymore apart from the knee pains and i have stopped taking liquid before i run

I will work out on runnng shoes as well...so u guys are saying that knee pains are normal?

Appreciate the advice RFYW :)

COLTRANE no I dont think the knee pains are normal. Make sure you listen to your body and only do what feels comfortable. I work out quite a bit and i recently started feeling pains in my knees so have stopped doing lunges which agrovated it.

The reason i say this is knees are very delicate parts of out body and need to be looked after. Some knee injurys, if not left to heal, can cause problems for the rest of your life. I have heard many an elder complain about 'thier knees'

Im not saying you have a knee injury but just saying to be careful. Jogging on grass is a good idea. The pavement has no natural shock absorber so its all down to your knees and they are obviously saying 'weve had enough for now'.

Grass is soft and absorbs some of the shock. Good triainers is another. Knee supports are a possibility but dont wear them for ever becuase your knees will start to rely on them. It depends on your weight as well. Im a fair weight so need to increase the pressure i put on my knees gradually - as they get stronger.

Pavenemt is man made and our knees can only take so much high impact exercise before they start to let you know enough is enough. Listen to them becuse they are complaining for a reason.

Good luck with your quest to get fitter. And most importantly enjoy it :)

I remember when I used to run to catch a  bus and reach the bus stop long before the bus pulled up with enough energy and breath to still cuss the driver/conductor and tell him/her how they saw me and they tried to play like they didn't and still give them a good ole slap on their headback as I got on the bus to sit down.  But lately I ran for a bus and my mind was running so fast 100m Olympic style  but my feet and legs said hell no all I could do was try and style it out by raising my hand in the air and shouting TAXI.......this was more than enough a message for me to say its time for me to get fitter!!!!no excuse really with all these parks and commons surrounding me.blktrainers

With jogging I've found that the key thing is to concentrate on your breathing.  Find and maintain a steady rate at which to breathe and everything else follows from that.

Yes, I would also say that a lot of it has to do with the mind.  Some people I know start thinking about all kinds of things related to them not completing the set distance 30 seconds into the exercise.  If you start with that mindset you'll never finish.  Before you start you need to pre think about the distance you want to complete, the time you want to do it in, think about how you are going to take your breathing, even what jogging style, the course you are taking (running through in your mind the things/places you are going to pass), the condition/type of ground you are going to jog on.  All these things I think you need to consider in relation to what you know about yourself and your body type.  Even the top 100m sprinters spend ages meditating over a 10 second race.  Years of training for a 10 second race.  There's a lot to concentrate on during that 10 seconds, trust me I used to do it for a time.

Your breathing shouldn't be that much faster than what it is when you are idle.  None of this whizzing business.  Easy, controlled,

So just have belief, its alot to do with your mind.  I've had friends who spend half their life in the gym.  Spend all there time sitting down whilst working out in that place and would never do a bit of aerobic exercise.  I don't agree with that.  The idiots feel that running on a treadmill will undermine their egos.  Take them on a piece of grass and they can't last 30 seconds, they end up huffing and puffing like a dog.

On technique, I think the aim is to run as smoothly as possible.  Time, relaxation and concentration will take care of that.  That, in addition to the right footwear should help prevent pain in the knees.  Still, stop, rest and take time out if you feel pain.  And I'll take this opportunity to tell people that when buying trainers for sport, athletics in particular, please buy ones that are made for what they are intended for.  I think Nike are the worst.  Just because you have Shox it doesn't mean you'll be floating on air.  Nike is for fashion.  Try brands like Asics.

Coltrane,

I understand that you would rather be an example to other joggers whoare jogging, but far as being fit, you shouldn't feel embarrased to join. After all you are there, most likely like the rest of those guys--to be/ stay fit. Some of those same White guys who you say you want to be as fit as most likely started on the same path that you are starting on..Unless they have been jogging since childhood, nobody automatically comes in jogging/running like the six-million dollar man. If so you let me know and I'll call media about that.Far as that pain in your legs, if you are just starting off jogging, you legs will be sore for a while until you get back into the rhythm of jogging, but to be sure that that is all is what wrong with, go see a doctor to make sure if you can handle it.

Definitly concentrate on the breathing. I have stopped now (not not breathing!!!!) But I used to be able to run about 6 miles. When I started I couldn't even do 1 mile. I used to have a really big problem with getting stitches and running out of breath.

The best way I found was not to concentrate on breathing in, your body does this automatically, just concentrate on breathing out. For me the best way was to try and empty my lungs as much as possible in a long breath but put some resistance to it, like blowing out through a small gap in your mouth.

As for mental toughness. I found that it helped to keep setting checkpoints. Like "ok, to that next lamp post", then "to that red car" that way it seemed that I was only thinking about running a short distance, instead of just seeing a road junction far away in the distance.

Hi,

This is my 1st time hia, and this is quite an interesting topic.

I used to run a lot hmmm back in d days when i used to run for school tournaments. But now i find it a complete struggle when i do, i spend the whole day lieing in bed due to pains. i find that am usu out of breath wen i do run plus my shins kill. With the breathing i do a bit of your yoga and i try to concentrate on my breathing, but when i run it's complete different story. Are My runNING RIGHT?
