When I do go out on the weekends in a night I can consume at least 5 bottles of buds *2 ie Friday and Saturday ten bottles of buds is that too much? I did'nt even realise that I drank so much until I read an article in the newspaper today about the implications of alcohol on your health. It's like you don't think of alcohol being a drug or anything and that everyone drinks hence a social bonding thing. But apparently consuming alcohols effects something called "Cortisol" also known as a "stress hormone it plays an important role in the regulation of emotion, cognition, reward, immune functioning, and energy utilisation. Experimental Research has found that long-term drinking produces an increase in cortisol both during intoxication and withdrawal.
Cortisol is the primary glucocorticoid in humans. Glucocorticoids are produced by the adrenal glands, two thumb-size organs that lie behind both kidneys. When a body's stress-response system is activated by stressors, usually unpredictable or fear- and/or anxiety-causing in nature, cortisol is increased. Stress-induced cortisol can focus alertness and attention, increase blood pressure, and suppress 'less necessary' bodily functions such as wound repair, bone growth, digestion, and reproduction. Alcohol can increase cortisol through a variety of mechanisms. Alcohol directly affects many brain chemicals that signal the adrenal glands to produce and secrete cortisol. High levels of intoxication may be interpreted as general 'stress,' which could stimulate cortisol release. After drinking a lot of alcohol for a long time, the sudden stopping of drinking can produce a stressful 'withdrawal' state, which can also increase cortisol production.
Did you know that different ethnic groups react to alcohol differently Genetic Influences
Certain minority groups may possess genetic traits that either predispose them to or protect them from becoming alcoholic. Few such traits have so far been discovered. However, the flushing reaction, found in the highest concentrations among people of Asian ancestry, is one example.
Flushing has been linked to variants of genes for enzymes involved in alcohol metabolism. It involves a reddening of the face and neck due to increased blood flow to those areas and can be accompanied by headaches, nausea, and other symptoms. Flushing can occur when even small amounts of alcohol are consumed (16).
Japanese-Americans living in Los Angeles have been studied. Among those with quick flushing responses (flushing occurs after one drink or less), fewer consumed alcohol than did those with no or with slow flushing responses (flushing occurs after two or more drinks)(17). In another group of Japanese-American students in Los Angeles, flushing was far less correlated with abstention from alcohol than it was in the first group (17). Thus, although flushing appears to deter alcohol use, people with the trait may nevertheless consume alcohol.
Another genetic difference between ethnic groups occurs among other enzymes involved in metabolizing alcohol in the liver. Variations have been observed between the structures and activity levels of the enzymes prevalent among Asians, blacks, and whites (18). One enzyme found in Japanese, for example, has been associated with faster elimination of alcohol from the body when compared with whites (19). Interesting leads relating these varying rates of alcohol metabolism among minorities to medical complications of alcoholism, such as liver disease, are now being followed.
On another topic after reading this it made me think that different ethnic groups react to certain external threats to the body differently. So We black people must have certain advantages that other ethnic groups don't have if this is the case gene biologist must have recognised this and are using it to their advantage surely and I dont mean the advantage to stay in the sun for long periods to work on sugar plantations.

I dont drink at all,
I find the concept of altering your mind, even slightly is trouble!
It is best to teach your body to have a good time without resorting to alcohol, ciggis ( although i did smoked briefly for 6 months then gave up) and drugs.

I dont drink or smoke and try to consume very little processed foods and am a strict vegan. Primarily because I too stumbled upon information such as this. My quest to understanding my body started due to illness (I always had problems with excess stomach acid and being sick most times when I had milk) and then research led me to a number of sources which helped me to transition to a vegan diet.
There is a book by Dr Laila O Afrika, African Wholistic Health. I highly recommend you reading it. It not only looks at alcohol it talks about other drugs such as Sugar. There is so much information out there on black health. Also Vitamins and Minerals From A to Z by Jewel Pookrum is excellent. It also touches on the fact that our bodies react differently to certain foods. Queen Afua's Heal Thy Self is excellent and if you are a woman Scared Woman is essential.
