Does anyone here meditate?

How has it benefit you?

Do you have a routine?

Any advice to beginners?

All comments welcome!

It has been 3 years of using meditation, and I can honestly say that it has changed the way I feel about my Self and the world around me.

Apart from it being an obvious relaxation therapy (Stress being a silent health hazard), it is a gradual learning process...

Our mind is more powerful that we know!

Interesting question

Meditation and contemplation is an important act of worship for muslims and many great Islamic saints did do contemplation. The goal being self discovery, understanding the world we live in, understanding our creator, taking into account of what we have been up to in our lives etc. Contemplation is one of the highest form of worship for Muslims and its merits are very high.
This is derived from the following verses of the Quran.

3:189 To Allah belongeth the dominion of the heavens and the earth; and Allah hath power over all things.

3:190 Behold! in the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the alternation of night and day,- there are indeed Signs for men of understanding,-

3:191 Men who celebrate the praises of Allah, standing, sitting, and lying down on their sides, and contemplate the (wonders of) creation in the heavens and the earth, (With the thought): "Our Lord! not for naught Hast Thou created (all) this! Glory to Thee! Give us salvation from the penalty of the Fire

So Muslims are encouraged to make use of their knowledge of Physics, chemistry, Biology, Mathematics and many more as a means to understand the ability of the Creator, faith coupled with knowledge leads to certainty. Throughout the Quran there are many encouragements for muslims to pursue branches of knowledge which leads to understanding of the creations from intellectual perspective and spiritual perspective. So yes Muslim do hold contemplation with very high regard. Indeed the is a higher use of knowledge than just getting a job serving an employer and earning a living, it is to expand your thinking capacity into understanding the world around you. Many of us have knowledge but very few of us really appreciate it.

The clasical routine, i hear, is to sit alone for an hour or 2 a day in the room and start this thinking process As for me personally i try to keep my mind busy all the time always thinking about things from what i experienced when i was young, to what i observe everyday, to what i see others experiencing, to what could happen in future. It can open a deep insight into the understanding of so many different things from: why you had almost no food in the house on 11th of april 1983, to why you grew up in a certain place, to how the structure of human bones satisfies the engineering principles of stiffness and damping and so many other things. Some of these discoveries could be for sharing and some could be personal.

Point is every aspect of life has a purpose no matter how meaningless it might appear and the journey to discover that purpose is contemplation.

Yep, been practicing meditation for a year and a half now...best decision I ever made...

How has it benefit you?
Clarity of thought, not fixated on negative situations or ideas...more restful, peaceful...

Do you have a routine?
I have a routine and I have specific music that I use...although sometimes I will meditate in silence...I used to meditate each day at 5.30am...but my routine has been a little erractic of late...so now I have switched over to the evenings instead...

Any advice to beginners?
Don't push yourself to hard...aim for 5-10 minutes at first and build up in increments...then you will find you are able to meditate for an hour in relative ease...

All comments welcome!

Yes

How has it benefit you?

It helps me with relaxation, concentration and visualization and to learn more about myself. The experience is spiritually uplifting and is also good to keep my mind in check.

Do you have a routine?

I used to do it regularly but the change in family life means I have had to do it when I can.

Any advice to beginners?

  • Be sincere and WANT to do it. No offense but sometimes people get into these things because it's in fashionconfused3If you aren't doing it for yourself, you won't get anything from it.
  • The environment has to be right. No distractions and you need to have space and take your time doing it.
  • Focus. Your frame of mind has to also be positive because if you have worries or can't switch your mind off from what you need to do afterwards and so on...you won't get as much - if anything - out of it.
  • Be patient and don't expect miracles overnight. Start with a short period of time as free suggested. Then the more you practice the longer you can stay with it. When you're done, don't just get up and switch back into fast pace mode, you will probably be relaxed afterwards anyway, but feel the benefits for yourself.
  • Discipline yourself to at least stick with it over a certain period of time e.g. a month, to see how you go.
  • Don't expect what happens to others when they meditate to happen to you. People will have different levels of experience so if they tell you things they have experienced, you may experience it but not straight away and could get disappointed when you realize that.
  • You may want to write down how it made you feel afterwards so you can reflect. Doing this can help you overstand more about yourself and what meditation does to help you progress spiritually.

clp) Wonderful topic.

I started meditating about four months ago.  I went into it with the intent of breaking habits that had annoyed me for years (smoking ganja, bad temper, etc). I was always a pretty religious person, doing my 5 daily prayers and fasting and giving charity, but these were habits that were difficult to break.  After my second cycle of meditation, I quit smoking that garbage.  By my fourth cycle, I knew that I had a better grip on my temper and my swearing.

I would definately recommend meditation to anyone who wants to break a habit or even cultivate a talent.  Try meditation before taking Ridalin (or however it's spelled) or Zoloft or paying some racist therapist to brainwash you through Eurocentric, slave making western psychology.

Lowering your brainwaves from beta to alpha has many great benefits. Mental clarity and relaxation. The renewed ability to focus on the task at hand is one of the most popular reasons for meditation.

Cleansing your mind and your body makes your journey on your path much easier.
