I got into lifting from going to a gym for a year.  The good part about that was that I had the chance to observe other guys lifting and ask questions.  The bad part about it is that weather and your schedule can interfere with going to the gym.  Plus by the time you have belonged to a gym for a couple of years, you could have bought all of the equipment that you needed for a home gym.

I no longer work out in a gym.  I bought myself a nice bench with cables and legpress.  There are lots of cardio exercises you can do if you don't have a treadmill (which I don't).  I'd just get myself a couple of how-to dvds and some home equipment if I were you.  You might even find some good websites with streaming video to learn new exercises.

Hi I've just joined a gym, and anticipate going everyday, I'm a skinny girl, so I will definitely feed up before I go. I do intend to go, more towards later evening that early morning though.

Can I just ask for gym members in this thread what gyms do you go to? My one is Holmes.

I joined the gym in July 2005, got one of the employees to set me up a program, you know the one that is loaded onto a key and you load it on every visit. Anyway that went okay for a couple months. The branch was close to work and I would go either on mornings before work or evenings. Then it got boring doing the same thing over and over, especially without seeing any significant results.

Then in Sept last year I moved to another branch of the same gym and got myself a trainer. It was going really well then he decided he was leaving..... I was all set to move with him but unfortunately I was "locked in" with the membership. Anyway he gave my details to one of the other trainers, who kept calling me to come in for a "taster" session...... IT WAS FANTASTIC!! Since then I never looked back!

I have personal training three times a week. My new trainer is really really good! At the begining of the year I got really serious and started a diet programme (albeit a bit drastic one) in conjunction with my training. I have completed the programme (lost over 4 stone) and still continue with my thrice weekly sessions. More than the weight loss and toned look, I just love the healthy energised feeling after each session. I feel stronger, have more stamina smoking-deviland am more supple smoking-devil. In June I ran my first 5K, and now try to run about that same distance every Saturday morning.

All in all, one of the best decisions I ever made and money very well spent!!

I must admit it is a significant monthly expense for me. His charge is £40 per session - book 10 sessions pay for 9 --  so effectively £36 per session.......Still money well spent I say!

Home gym for me. I bought a treadmill of Ebay for £250 with 1 year warranty that has a rrp of £550 and i also bought myself a rower as well for £45 that has a rrp of £200 in Argos. I use the equipment now for at least for 1 hour 20 mins a day for at least five days a week.
I prefer to work out alone at home than in a gym. I also don't really like the gym environment.
I wouldn't mind going on the Elliptical but i can live without that.
I mentioned in another post that i would be going for a run outside as well on top of what i have been doing at home but i haven't been doing that. My routine is what i have mentioned above now.
