blkafro....I used to get dandruff something-sweet until I stopped using pomades and greases 10 years ago.

Now I just brush my hair in the morning after a shower and use light-oil spray a couple times a week and I've been dandruff free for 10 years......encouraging other bruthaz to do the same.

As a former part-time swing-shift barber, I know for a fact that most of the ingredients and chemicals in these so-called "ethnic" products are caustic to the scalp of most people of African descent.  Rather than oiling the scalp...which we need in these cold northern climates...they actually BLOCK the pores and trap dirt and bacteria causing irritation.  Also, most of the sprays contain ALCHOHOL is inflammatory and irritating to the scalp.

Don't ask me...confused3

I don't know what to do with women's hair except smell it ;).

But it seems to me that as long as you're getting enough omega-6 fatty acids in your diet and aren't using any greases or lotions that block the pores...just a little light oil should be enought to keep your scalp well lubed.

i had alove -hate relationship with hair oil/grease. when i was younger my mum used dax and royal crown and those types. when i took over i just used the moisturiser on my scalp. but now i use hair grease/oil again but through trail error i have found the ones with the most natural ingredients work best for me. i also use what my hairdresser uses to wash and condition my hair has gobe from strength to strength. black hair or afro hair whatever suits you needs moisture.

i used to use dax even the light kind and it was too much. i think i am jus tputtin too much on my hair. im gonna try something im getting really bad dandruff. i was natural for 8months i didnt have this problem. so i think the relaxing is drying my scalp. i dont i guess ill just try something and see what works best.

Hi All

It's interesting to view some of your reactions. Hair and scalp conditions are normally made up of a lot of different factors unique to the individual. But its good to see an understanding about omega oils 3 and 6 or EFAS essential fatty acids helping skin and hair and also that a lot of petroleum based products can cause pores to get blocked. Did you know dandruff can be caused by the excess sebum (a natural oil the scalp produces) deposited on the scalp?

If you are interested in comong to the majesiq roots workshops they are free to get in! Get the details- make contact and come on down.

Healthy hair and scalp happens by DESIGN...not chance. niceone.gifniceone.gifniceone.gif

I USE TO PERM MY HAIR - I THINK I LOOK GOOD WITH BLOND HAIR - ANYWAYS - I CUT MY HAIR BALD AND NOW I HAVE A FULL HEAD OF MY NATURAL HAIR - NO CHEMICALS.

I WASH MY HAIR WITH DOVE SOAP - OR SOMETIMES I USE TONE WITH ALOEVERA.

MY HAIR IS AS SOFT A IT WAS WHEN IT WAS FRESHLY PERMED WHILE WET NATURALLY WITHOUT THE PERM.

ALTHOUGH MY HAIR MAY NOT BE STRAIGHT - IT IS LOOSELY WAVED AND IN THE BACK MY HAIR IS FINE- MUST BE THE INDIAN OR THE IRISH PART IN ME BECAUSE MY HAIR IS COURSE IN THE SECTION OF THE CROWN BUT NOT NAPPY.

I DONOT USE STRAIGHTENING COMBS NOR TEXTURIZERS OR BLOW OUTS.

I LOVE MY NATURAL HAIR - I DONOT USE LOTIONS - CREAMS NO GREASES OR GELS.

MY HAIR IS BEAUTIFUL NATURALLY.

IT HAS IT'S OWN NATURAL OILS - I WEAR MY HAIR IN BRAIDS - NATURAL BRAIDS - NO WEAVES - NO EXTENTIONS - I WEAR MY OWN HAIR- MY OWN EYE LASHES AND I'M LOVING IT.

TRY BEING COMPLETELY NATURAL - DONT USE OVER THE COUNTER SHAMPOO'S - USE PLAIN DOVE SOAP - BREAD YOUR HAIR WHEN IT'S WET - AND REBRAID EVERY 3 DAYS.

WHEN I FIRST CUT MY HAIR BALD - I WASHED MY HAIR EVERYDAY - AND AT THE TIME I WAS GOING THROUGH A ROUGH PERIOD WITH MONEY AND I USED DOVE SOPA AND SOMETIMES I USED TONE- HELL MY HAIR TURNED OUT BETTER USING THAT THEN WHEN I SPENT REAL MONEY ON PRODUCTS DESIGNED TO SOFTENED MY HAIR.

I AM ALL NATURAL FOREVER NOW

I totally agree with the use of Dove soap. clp)

I thought it was just me, as my friends look at me  like I'm crazy. Its gentle on my scalp and cleanses my natural hair (Locs)  lathering quicky and washing out easily. I have starting using the Dove conditioner on the ends of my hair for added sheen, as I find pomades etc too heavy and attracts the dirt and dust in the air.
