pushups are more practical.......just so many variations and you can do them anywhere..
you can get better separation and definition with pushups......
to add mass you'll need to do some bench press and other free weights though

Bench press for adding mass to the chest
pushups are good though as DtotheJ stated before me.
HOWEVER
if your planning to do this in a gym id suggest you add some dips to the workout also..works the chest great and you get a some tricep thrown in to boot.

I do them all................do incline , decline, wide grip etc..diamond hand position
try getting a backpack and adding "plastic " freeweights to them to have additional resistance.....your body gets used to doing pshups with just body weight after a while...

Check out the pecs on these guys. For some reason they are puffy and almost look like women's breasts. What are they doing wrong?

| You can't just do bench press or push ups because your the rest of your body will be out of proportion you have to do your arms at the same time. When doing push ups try putting your feet on a chair so your inclined and it works different areas.

It depends upon what your goal is. Do you just want more muscle mass? Do you want increased strength? Do you want increased strength BUT want to maintain excellent hand speed?
High reps with lighter weights will help develop strentgh and allow one to maintain hand speed, low reps with heavy weights will build muscle mass, but you will be developing slow twitch muscles and this may effect your handspeed.

| Yes infact there are some secret remedies in adding mass with pushups, and that is prior adding weight by putting books on your back, or whatever heavy things they are, it sounds ridicolous but it helps haha

I would recommend bench press, but with dumbbells, or perhaps you would call it dumbbell press...whatever.
Anyhow, I would recommend about a 15 degree incline, and keep the weights shoulder-length wide the entire range of motion (up and back down as if you had a bar in your hands). The dumbbells give you far more definition than the regular bar, they still add mass if you want it, and you will actually be stronger developing isolated strength.
For example, if you can do 120 lbs in each hand on the dumbbell press, then you are stronger than anyone who can only do 315 lbs with the bar. Although it is important to do both the bar and separate weights, the bar is more for ego than anything else. People just like to see themselves push up alot of weight.

| After reading the responses on here, I went out and learned 3 new kinds of pushups. Now I do diamond hand pushups, regular pushups, and dive bomber pushups (which seem to be tightening my pecs already). What I've noticed is not only a small improvement in the chest area, but the upper arms and triceps as well. Thanks a million! Good advice on here.

You can see examples of the bomb diver here:
Dive bomber push-ups

Assume push-up position, spread your feet shoulder-width apart and move them till about 30-40 cm from your hands, so that your buttocks are high up in the air push your head toward the ground and pretending you put your head through a hole at the bottom of a fence, bring your head forward maintain that position for 2 to 3 seconds in one fluid motion, bring your body back to the starting position.
