Been toying with the idea for a little while now for a few reasons so wanted to ask any vegetarians, why you made that choice and what would you say the benefits are, if any?

There's a much higher chance of red meat sticking to your colon and it doesn't digest very good either so I avoid it like the plague. Same with pork. I'm mainly a fish eater and chicken is something I eat less and less.

I guess I'm healthier as a result lol.

Hmm wasn't aware of the colon thing so thanks for the edumaction. I've been bought up not eating pork and I heard something about it not breaking down in your body properly.

I absolutely love fish. much more than I like any kind of meat. And i feel kinda funny about eating chicken at the moment. I'm not one to buy into too much hype but this bird flu business makes me nervous.

I think with a little will pwer I could cut it as a veggie. Since my weight loss, I'm a lot more concious about what I put into my body. I plan to look after it more this time and I'm one of those rare people who thinks broccoli is a damn tasy snack lol!

How long ago did you decide to become veggie?

Ive been vegetarian since my late teens.

Benefits???

Its cheap to eat once you get the hang of it,I can cook over 50 different types of Veggie meals from scratch.

To be honest health-wise it depends on what kind of vegetarian you want to be coz there are plenty of obese vegetarians who think because they dont eat meat it gives them carte-blanche to eat their body weight in cheese and other dairy products.

There are some carnivores who eat way better than so called healthy veggies!

If I lived in a different way in a different environment and I was able to kill my own animals then I probably would still eat some meat, but the meat which is on sale in supermarkets and in fast-food chains has so many unbelievably heinous things in it that your body cant recognize or process, that there is no way I would ever go near it.

If you are thinking about it SS start gradually and whilst you are still eating meat, source good cuts and when you want to stop altogether, maybe think about becoming a pescatarian first(someone who still eats fish and dairy but no,chicken, beef, pork, lamb etc etc).

People who bang on about vegetarians and know nothing about nutriton often say "where do you get your protein from blah, blah"well the body doesnt actually need that much protein on a daily basis,in fact if you ate 10 cashews a day thats all the protein you need, much more important to concern your self with anti-oxidant veggies, like broccoli, carrots, red peppers etc and good carbs like brown rice, yams, sweet potatos etc.

I've been a veggie for six years now and lovin' it. If you research what red meat can do to the body you'd be very disgusted lol.

I haven't eaten meat for the past 26 years. Just never liked it and at the time my mum didn't see the point of making two different meals and ended up not eating meat herself. I started to eat fish in my mid teens and that's the only "meat" I eat. I want to stop again but now have the whole family to consider if and when we change our diet.

Benefits. I'm still alive! As jett black says it gets annoying when people say but how do you survive without meat?! That's usually followed by do you just eat salad then? Like when they have the two veg all of a sudden the veg is not there:shock:

Another reason meat is not good for you is that animal protein contains a high amount of uric acids which can't be broken down by your liver. Some of it leaves your body but most of it moves into your joints which in time creates arthritis. Heart disease and hardening of the arteries also happens due to high cholesterol that cannot be removed from your body which is why you hear ads saying that the product being pushed can REDUCE cholesterol....then you have all the things injected into the animal before it get's to the butcher or shop ready for you to buy....anyway what's making you think different now?

@ Jett

Lol at "body weight in cheese!

Well, thankfully I wasn't planning to use vegetarianism to maintain my weight lol. I'm just far more health concious than I used to be. I had planned to work my way down gradually like you said although I hadn't planned to cut out fish or dairy. I didn't know there was a name for it so thanks for that info. I don't eat red meat too often so that shouldn't be hard to cut out. Although my weakness as far as meat is concerned is my mums roast lamb! Oh how I shall miss it lol!

Anyway, I'm still toying with the idea but i'm 70% 30% in favour of "pescatarian" at the moment and if I do go that way, I will start gradually as suggested niceone.gif

Last year before I lost weight, I was very ignorant about the things I put into my body. rather than simply just shift the weight, I learnt a lot about the way the my body works and how it reacts to cirtain things. Basically, I didn't eat"conventional" food for three months and when I finally did re-introduce food back into my diet, I could literally feel the effects that each thing had on me. My body feels much better after eating fish than it does after meat so I don't eat as much meat as I used to anyway.

Lol, I'm perfectly aware that vegetarianism is healthy! People always have an aversion to what they are ignorant of!

Lol! A vegetarian is somebody who has no meat in their diet. Chicken is in the meat category. Poultry.

I've been a vegetarian for over 10 years now. The benefits for me and my diet have been very positive.

My skin is incredible. The whites of my eyes are very white. My hair just grows; very long, healthy and thick(all natural). My nails grow. In general, I don't feel sluggish or lethargic after I eat my food.

You find with meat that it takes ages to digest - if at all.

I used to be a vegan but I felt that I was missing out on protein.

Vegetarianism?  Lol. Nah, man I wouldn't go that route.  One thing I can't stand about vegetarians is their preachiness.  Just because you've given up meat doesn't mean that you're more caring or enlightened than regular folk.  This is also one reason why I can't stand most Marxists.  Just live your life and let others live theirs.

I'm one of the vegetarians who eats fish!
I haven't eaten red meat since I was very little, but I ate chicken until I was about 13. I didn't really make the choice, parents made it for me but as soon as I stopped eating meat I noticed an improvement in my skin and I just felt healthier in general.
When I stopped eating meat there was no weaning off period and it was surprisingly easy and I have never felt tempted to go back to eating it.
Good luck with your attempt if you do decide to go veggie!banana.gif (the banana man signifies how much more energy you will have)!

I'm not a vegetarian, but because of my sensitive stomach I am slowly becoming a person who only eats fish and chicken, no red meat and no dairy.

I hadn't eaten pork for months, but had a relapse a couple of days ago because I found out that I can no longer eat most of my favourite foods...so I ''rebelled'' LOL. But it is out of my system now.

But anyway I have done some reading about what certain meats do to your system, and trust me I have experienced some of that crap and it is not nice.

When you're trying to eat right, BBQs are the worse times. When the aroma gets in your nostrils you really have to exercise self control lol.

I've been thinking about it, I would like to cut down on meat and replace meat dishes with vegetarian dishes.

Does anyone have any basic recipes to share and/or books to reccomend?

Thanks in advance.

vegetarian is a good move..but remember when you cook ur veggies you kill the nutrients in them..so u might want to eat some raw fruits and veggies to make up for it...I was a raw foodist for maybe 6-9 months...i loved it...i should go back to it...soon i will...i started by eating a salad with every meal until i did not want meat anymore...nuts and grains can give you the protien u need...
