@all

I'm sure overweight issues are important to the overweight.  I have always viewed those who are obsessed this issue with a certain contempt.  Truth is, as has already been pointed out, that if your'e fat it's because you eat too much.  Simple as. Except for those rare cases where there is a medical condition associated with the weight gain.

All the Oprah Winfrey style agonising about weight e.g. it's becasue I was abused, it's because my boyfriend isn't supportive, it's because society makes me feel bad, It's because of my emotional problems etc are totally fictitous.

All of the above happen in other countries yet those people aren't as overweight as those in the states. The latest one is - I was abused as a child so I gained weight to to make myself unattractive to men.  What if you weren't abused and your 'e still fat? Does that mean your more likely to be abused if your'e slim? If that's the case why do so many fatties want to be slim? It doesn't make any sense to me.

Now it's "fatsos are an oppressed group", a bit like gays and of course Blacks. The gay movement claims it's as legitimate as the Black Civil Rights Movement. That one totally stupefies me.  The noble Black cause for equality, a cause that demands full social, economic and civil rights for all in society and one that promotes the integrity of the family.

On the other hand, the gay movement demands gay rights, which one can only assume means specific rights for gays as opposed to rights for all. Now similarly we have, "I'm fat and I'm an oppressed group too." .

Crying, "you wouldn't deny me if I was Black" seems to benefit everybody but Blacks. Likening ones circumstances to that of Blacks has become the stick that every one uses to demand their useless right to have anal sex in public toilets, or eat until the only employment they're fit for is as the main attraction in a circus freakshow, but claim discrimination because they didn't get a job as an air hostess.

All this does is undermine the work Blacks have done to bring to the top of the political agenda the real suffering and oppression they have endured.  Every frivolous claim of discrimination undermines this work and sets back civil rights gains by many years.

@ All

Thanks for the contributions...but in particular thanks for those who attempted to keep it on course and at a  high level and not turn it into showtime at the Apollo. This isssue is not funny nor is it make believe.

@ Afromerica...

....you wrote:Wow, it's amazing how this topic came to picking at each others national issues.

My sentiments exactly. I don't know how a legitimate issue got turned into some folks displaying their own personal biases but it did. I truly don't know what else to say.

@ Spice

Normally I don't do this sort of thing but look, If you didn't like this topic you had the choice to not respond to it at all. I posted this and if you look very carefully to the left of your screen next to location you will see where I am based..., this is a very serious issue for a lot of peeps.  It's not about us versus them. The article makes very good points....and I asked if our physical attributes (roundness, curves, etc....with many of us not all of us) should be taken into consideration before the government puts out these one size fits all regulations. If you want to discuss aids in Africa, I believe there is a thread I started on that as well...You have the choice of making a contribution to it on your own or I can move your concerns over there. Take your pick.

Interesting! But I guess it depends on where your priorites lie.  What I mean is, if you think the type of disabling obesity which only afflicts a tiny minority of African Americans is a priority issue for Blacks as a whole, and one which energy and resources should be devoted to, I would disagree.

I would say it ranks low in the hiearchy of challenges Blacks face wherever they are in the world.  Most Blacks worldwide are not overweight and far too many are under weight due to the unavailabilty of food.

This is not to perpetuate a negative stereotype of Africa, it is a reality for many on that continent.  Being fat is a problem that boils down to self discipline. No money, or organisation, study or risk need be expended in reducing what you eat.  It is an individual choice to be overweight and the vast majority need not be fat if they don't want to be.

People should stop indulging the fat, stop making excuses for their fatness, and  tell them the simple truth - all you have to do to solve a weight problem is eat less.

It cannot be right to internalise the European obssession with this trivial nonsense when so many in the world, not just Africa are suffering and dying for want of food to eat.  How anyone who is well fed can expect to be taken seriously as somenone suffering from a disease called " I eat too  much because there's too much to eat", boggles the mind. It shows a total absorbtion of Western values and Western ears and eyes blindness to the real suffering of most of the earths population.

To do so, is to my mind, further evidence that we are drifting away from that sense of identification with the suffering of our Brothers and Sisters back home. Ultimately we may find ourseleves on our own, when one day we need them.

Spice, I didn't write this...silentjoy did.  Re-read the post from Thursday March 18th, 2004 12:37 and my reponse to this is in green.  Nor did I say, that heartattacks are limited to black women in America.  Did you even read my post?????

Spice wrote:It is actually what you are eatting as oppose to the amount that is causing the trouble.

This particularly evident in the South where black folks grew up consuming only high fatty foods like chitterlings, pig, feet, pig ears, chicken fried in deep fat etc. This type of eatting was handled down from black slaves who's masters eat the best foods and give the slaves foods they didn't want.

So first you say heart attacks are not limited to black women, but then go on to say that the consumption of high fatty foods is particularly evident amoung Southern Black folks because of Soul Food!??!!?  You should know that it's not what you cook and eat,..it's the way you cook it.  Now...I would surely choose Soul Food over fast food anyday.  Chitterlings, and pig feets are Soul Foods, but you wouldnt be able to get the younger generation to eat this stuff, which is only a seasonal thang anyway...especially during holidays.  Pig ears????? not very commom here.  And chicken fried in deep fat etc..????  This is a very big sterotype and generalization and funny that you should mention this because I thought as an American speaking against sterotype, that you would know better than to believe such non-sense...lol

Yes, Soul Food (associated with African Americans in the south) was a response to economic and racial oppression during slavery, but still serves as a well balanced meal with One meat and three veggies, a tradition handed down from generation to generation.  Now last time I checked....the North is known for it's over comsuption of fast food...and again...this is not to say that all peoples that eat fast food are overweight.  But if you want to talk about unhealthy diets and eating, lets not start this pointing the finger at one particular region or area, if this is going to be addressed, this issue should be addressed abroad.  Talk about taking the opportunity to beat somebody with a stick!!!!!!!!

Anubyss, I agree, this "Overweight" issue is not one of my priorities to address.  I have more concern about our brotha's and sista's of Africa and their daily sitution, and the structual form of racism people of the African diaspora face on a daily basis.  I think this "overweight" thing is over exploited, and undermines significant factors that relate to the problem.

@Ashanti: Good point!!!

Guys,

When it come to determing  healthy weight, I have a problem with it.  Our doctors tell us to lose weight and that is it. My grandmother is what some guys would be considered to be a " thick" fine woman, she has a nice figure for a woman of 79 years, but she wants to lose down to 121 plus pounds and that scares me. She cannot afford to go down that low because 1) She's gotten told to get that thin 2) Her frame.

Like my grandmother, I, too, is " thick" and most likely will be " thick" for the rest of my life. I remembered envying my baby sisiter because she was petite at 115 lbs .I weighed about 140 lbs and wanted to lose more. Ironically, I lost the weight, unfortunately, the wrong way. I was stressed and at that time I wasn't eating right so lost down to 128 lbs. By right I should have been jumping for joy about the weight loss , but I wasn't, because it didn't look right on me. Ever looked at the character Popeye? Ever looked at his arms, imagine me loooking that way. My legs was fine, but chest was skeleton like to the point that my brother /sister couldn't stand looking at me for it. It was a call for concern. Even though I was 128 lbs, I was also near anorexic and if I would have continued to lose weight like that, either I would have severe heart trouble or I would be pushing daisies. I 'm big boned and for my frame, height and age 140 should be my ideal weight, not 128 lbs. That was why  I was near anorexic.

When we tell our kids to lose weight or to be healthy, have to be careful of what true healthiness is. Just because you may weigh a certain amount that may seem overweight to some people doesn't make you unhealthy and we should tell people that you can seat what you want but eat at a moderate pace and exercise. Even skinny women are not exempt from these problems. I just don't know what make people think that just because you're skinny you're in shape. To me in shpae means physical endurance of doing things. There are just as many skinny who are not in shape as some of the obese ones. The only differences are that the skinny people are not going to get any flack from it because supposedly skinny people are supposed to be in shape.

GOSH! It's like feeding time at the piranha enclosure, lol, where did all this animosity spring from? Does everything on these forums have to turn into a slanging match? I think Ashanti started off this topic with the inclination to help and inform rather than have people verbally biting at each other.

The problem of obesity whether amongst black or white is one that is evident, and serious, you only have to look on the streets to substantiate this.

Firstly @ BlackBeauty - bighairlol girl u had me bussin me up at ur interaction with spice, ur a joker, maybe queens of comedy has a vacant slot, but seen as we're in England it's gonna have to be 'night out at the empire' (which is back on by the way).

@ Spice - why do you take everything so personal girl? It's proven, seen, fact that there is alot of obesity in the states (amongst other places). Have you seen the quadruple portions on a tray sized platter, you are served in every American restaurant? Such big portions can't be good. Plus it's only in the states individuals are raising court cases against fast food outlets 'for making them fat' as if the companies rammed the s*** down their gluttonous throats with a hacksaw held at their heads, lol, come on if you don't laugh u'll cry.

There are people I know of in my area as well as pop idol reject Rik Waller who go to the states solely to stock up on plus sized clothes which are not available elsewhere. What does that tell you?

I'm not hating I'm just being realistic here, Im not saying USA is the ONLY country with obesity as a problem, obesity is worldwide but its in excess in the states. Now that I've jumped on the USA band wagon are u gonna start with me too Spice, learn to take things with a pinch of salt sometimes luv :)

Even in Jamaica I know of a woman in St Thomas who couldn't leave her bed due to her size and in Jamaica it's considered popular to be overweight (big, fat and round lol). Skinny girls are ridiculed and laughed at. The fat girls are running tings. Alot of girls in Jamaica even take fowl pills (pills fed to chickens to fatten them) and it  blows them up into BIG girls with nuff thighs, breast and batty (bad for their health though as they're not chickens) so there you go, its not just the US that have health/weight problems. In some countries (third world) I know its positive to be fat/overweight as it means ur family/tribe have money. If they can afford to feed you so well for u to be so fat u must be rich, lol.

I do not know who defines what is clinically or morbidly obese, all I can say is, when ur size impedes ur every day life and affects ur mobility, when it affects ur breathing, puts pressure on ur internal organs, causes skins sores and blisters (obesity does all this and more) it cant be anything positive. Skinny, marga, thin, we dont all have to be, but maintaining  a weight that is less fashion conscious as opposed to HEALTHY is what its all about..

One Love

I did some poking around on older topics and you seem to be right. There's little mention of the suffering that's going on in africa,by expat africans..Case in point-there's a topic in this forum on aids statistics in south africa, that was authored back in february, but only recieved 2 responses.Whereas this topic has in excess of 35 respones in just a few days.

Sad to say,the rather stupid topics here, like the ones on interracial relationships, consistently get the most respones and topics of relevance, the least.

It's called misplaced priorities!Give me a bit of time and I'll initiate some debate and discussion on the misery in africa.

later!

@Silentjoy, that's and it would certainly be refreshing to read something other than the plit of people who happen to jus have some meat of them bones.banana.gif

@Ashanti, I am not totally knocking what you have posted because some good points where made but what is distrubing to me is the negative fat bashing about Americans (African American Women in particular) this topic generates.

There have been several posts and comments here about African American's weight issues and I find to post another is simply redundunt which crosses over a thin line from concern to insults and ridicule.

Sorry, I misread the name.

Spice wrote:It is actually what you are eatting as oppose to the amount that is causing the trouble.

Yes, the high fatty foods that is often consumed by black folks(in the southern states particularly) contributes to heart attacks and hard disease.  I will agree  there are healthier ways of cooking but come on a pork chop is a pork chop and it doesn't make that much of a difference if you fry, bake or broil it because the meat itself is highly fat.

Now...I would surely choose Soul Food over fast food anyday.

I agree that greens stewed with smoked turkey parts and beans with onions and baked chicken are healthy and nutrious but what other "Soul Foods" do you know to be healthy?  Certainly not, cornbread, spareribs, hopin john, fried chicken, fried pork chops or sweet potatoes floating in sweet sugar, nutmeg, butter sauce.

Chitterlings, and pig feets are Soul Foods, but you wouldnt be able to get the younger generation to eat this stuff, which is only a seasonal thang anyway...especially during holidays.  Pig ears????? not very commom here.

I have know several folks from the south who would swear that they grow up on this very type of cusine.

And chicken fried in deep fat etc..????  This is a very big sterotype and generalization and funny that you should mention this because I thought as an American speaking against sterotype, that you would know better than to believe such non-sense...lol

I don't see at all where this a stereotype because it true most of us in the black community cater to soul food.  I can only see denial on your part as the reason for saying that my comment is a broad generalization.

Yes, Soul Food (associated with African Americans in the south) was a response to economic and racial oppression during slavery, but still serves as a well balanced meal with One meat and three veggies

Only if proper selections and substitutions are made.

Now last time I checked....the North is known for it's over comsuption of fast food..

So the last time you checked everyone's plate in the North we was all just chowing down on fast food?  Now that is what you call a big generalization.

.and again...this is not to say that all peoples that eat fast food are overweight.  But if you want to talk about unhealthy diets and eating, lets not start this pointing the finger at one particular region or area.

I wasn't pointing the finger, only trying to make the point that same health problems that face moderately heavy African American women also face thinner African Americans because of the unhealthy food choices that Black folks make due to as you said  "a tradition handed down from generation to generation"  And this heavy fatty food tradition did start in the south and for the reason I stated and is still today practiced more by Southern African Americans than African Americans from the North and other regions.

if this is going to be addressed, this issue should be addressed abroad.  Talk about taking the opportunity to beat somebody with a stick!!!!!!!!

Just stating the truth.blkscholar

@ Cutie:

The last part of your last sentence said it in a nutshell. I just so wish society in particular here would get with that instead of focusing on outside appearance so much. There are a lot of healthy people getting caught up in this only thin is beautiful and healthy madness.

@ Spice

I know exactly what you are saying when it comes to the insults....just try to ignore them, although it can be very hard at times, okay?

@ All

There have been some great solutions mentioned here....Eating healthier, more physical activity, basically making changes in behavior. But I have learned by living with a professional who is in the field of behavioral science...It is really not that simple for a lot of peeps. Over-eating in a lot of cases is the by product of a bigger issue, perhaps a past trauma such as molestation/rape or some other physical abuse. It is a coping skill for many. Some people drink too much to cope with problems, some gamble, others eat, although it is easier to believe that everyone who is overweight is that way because of the usual stereotype. Again I appreciate the responses.blktype

For anyone interested....I have included the link to the CDC's BMI (BODY MASS INDEX)calculator...this is how they determine if you are over or under weight...try it.

http://www.cdc.gov/nccdphp/dnpa/bmi/calc-bmi.htm

@Hi Cutie, I do take this particular subject personally because I am not one of those tiny size 5 or average size 12s, I am a big woman and though I do welcome some concerns or ideas, I don't approve of the ranting or ridicule.

It's proven, seen, fact that there is alot of obesity in the states (amongst other places). Have you seen the quadruple portions on a tray sized platter, you are served in every American restaurant?

Yes I have seen and have had them served to me.  I try to avoid them by ordering sides, children portions or eatting half now and half later.

Such big portions can't be good. Plus it's only in the states individuals are raising court cases against fast food outlets 'for making them fat' as if the companies rammed the s*** down their gluttonous throats with a hacksaw held at their heads, lol, come on if you don't laugh u'll cry.

Yeah, those are overweight idiots that have eatten all that food on their own then decides to the restuarants for making these dishes.  It is heavy, irresponsible  people like this, that makes all of us big folks look bad.

There are people I know of in my area as well as pop idol reject Rik Waller who go to the states solely to stock up on plus sized clothes which are not available elsewhere. What does that tell you?

Nope I'm not going to start on you, blkangryblkexercise Cutie because you have stated that yes there is an obesity problem in the U.S. but it is also a global problem as well, just not an American one.

Even in Jamaica I know of a woman in St Thomas who couldn't leave her bed due to her size and in Jamaica it's considered popular to be overweight (big, fat and round lol). Even at 200 lbs and being big boned my weight don't impare any of my abilities but that still doesn't stop some little skinnies from shaking their disapproving heads at me and from wacking me hard over my head with their ever ready skinny sticks for not being as thin as them.

@Spice,

Say.......I'm afraid that I need to point something out here.I can understand your reaction to people dumping on americans for being fat. It's human nature to get defensive, when one's nationality is put-on-the-spot.

Yet....I think that you're majorly hypocritical, because all over this website you've made some derrogatory statements about our black men.Not to mention that you've painted a picture of white men as benovelant angels, who's shyte doesn't stink.Lady,if that were indeed the case the divorce rate amongst whites in canada and the u.s. wouldn't be a staggering 55%.

I'm just saying......you come off as if it's not right to mention anything remotely negative about african american women, but it's perfectly ok to to talk shyte about black men, which amounts to hypocrisy gone mad in my opinion.

God knows there's some bad black men out there(fill in the nationality),but it's best to judge them as individuals and not stereotype all of them. There's tons of great black guys out there.

If you're a black u.s. woman,I'd bet a million dollars that you have been unjustly stereotyped by other groups yourself. So why dish out the same justice to black men?I haven't been AT BT long, but I noticed that you've made heaps of disparaging remarks about black men and pumped up whitey on many occasions.Others have pointed this out too.

After all is said and done,we must come to the realization that black men are the finest looking men on this earth and if we(black women)were to disassociate ourselves from them, surely, women of other races would scoop them up in a heart-beat.

@Spice     I'm not disputing weather or not Soul Food is fatty, because in some cases it is depending on how the meal is balanced.  I'm disputing what Soul Food is to you is not what it is for all Black Folk in the South.  Soul Food is not all about cooking food in deep fat ect. etc, and to say so, is a broad generalization and an insult to African American cusine.

So first you say heart attacks are not limited to black women, but then go on to say that the consumption of high fatty foods is particularly evident amoung Southern Black folks because of Soul Food!??!!?  You should know that it's not what you cook and eat,..it's the way you cook it.

And exactly how offten are you asuming that pork chops are consumed by any given family, or any given person??  This isn't a gerenalization?

Now...I would surely choose Soul Food over fast food anyday.

I agree that greens stewed with smoked turkey parts and beans with onions and baked chicken are healthy and nutrious but what other "Soul Foods" do you know to be healthy?  Certainly not, cornbread, spareribs, hopin john, fried chicken, fried pork chops or sweet potatoes floating in sweet sugar, nutmeg, butter sauce.

In one sitting, you can't possibly think that a person would consume a variety like that.   Either you are exagerating or just uninformed.  One sitting would included one meat, and three veggies.  Most offten green beans, sweet corn, sweet pea's, or steamed cabbage, okra, amoung other things.  If you are talking about holidays..then yep, a wild variety of things are served at once.

Very true, and mostly only the grown-ups eat this very type of cusine...like I said, you wouldn't be able to get the younger generation to eat this stuff.  But this very type of cusine is only seasonaly, meaning mostly only on holidays at family gatherings.  I don't doubt there are folks that eat pig ears, some even eat turtles in stew's.  but it's not a common dish.

I'm not denying anything, I'm saying Soul Food is not about catering high fatty foods.  If it was the case then, more than 65% of African Americans would be "so-called" overweight, and to say so is a broad generalization of the cusine

Yes, Soul Food (associated with African Americans in the south) was a response to economic and racial oppression during slavery, but still serves as a well balanced meal with One meat and three veggies

Only if proper selections and substitutions are made.

And a single sitting 2-3 times a week consisting of a combination of protein and veggies is not a blanced meal, after what you said about our brotha's and sista's in Africa being malnurished???  That's over consumption

Now last time I checked....the North is known for it's over comsuption of fast food..

So the last time you checked everyone's plate in the North we was all just chowing down on fast food?  Now that is what you call a big generalization.

This is based on the sales of fast food chains across the nation.   maybe I shouldn't use the word "over", but it's more.

.and again...this is not to say that all peoples that eat fast food are overweight.

This is where I'm starting to question how much do you know about the tradition of preparing Soul Food, and it's evolution in our modern times?  The biggest part of this tradition is the gathering of family to sit around a table and talk of good times, which I say again, and as you may well know is a holiday thang.  The average black mother would not have time to even cook like this more than 2-3 times a week, and when she do, it would be a simple prepared dinner with the combination of one meat and 2-3 veggies.  Yes and you notable state this is more paractised in the South than the North and other regions, concluding what I said before about the consumption of fast food in other regions.

if this is going to be addressed, this issue should be addressed abroad.  Talk about taking the opportunity to beat somebody with a stick!!!!!!!!

Just stating the truth.blkscholar

I tried to come in to this topic with a broad apporoach, but most of your post has been to do the opposite of what you think some skinny person with an agenda is doing to you.  Beating skinny women with the big stick or unhealthy stick.  I said not all overweight people are the victims of those healh issues, and I also said that not all slim people are healthy and eat healthy, and vice versa.  It seems like you are simply trying to take the blame and cause off one, to put it on the other.

Hello, Cash,

Far as my my height, I'm 5'5 1/2, at least that is what my doc said and it was my doctor who told me about the weight loss problem. Intially she told me that if I was going to to lose weight I should lose no more than 10 because being big boned and being at a ceratin age and frame it would make me lock sick an dboy she didn't lie about that. As I mentioned my grandmother wants to do the same and she's asking for it. She wants to be skinny and she thinks that women who weigh over 140, are fat but unfortunately, unlike my doc, so many doctors only tell you to lose weight, but not the amount of weight that suppose to fit you. At 79 and about 5'5' like me. It would not look right on her and being older, it may cause her more harm than good.

Sometimes, I will admit that my grandmother can anger me. It's like any women who weigh over 140 lbs and shapeless. I have two cousins one is about 5'7' and she appears to weight arouind 190( I'm just guessing because of her height and the meat one her bones and I have another cousin who is 5'11 and weighs 200lbs. Far as cuz she always saying that she shouldn't gain weight because she is shapeless and the near 6 foot cousin is supposedly shapeless. Ok, I will admit the first cousin has a box like figure weight or no weight, the second cuz, she looks good and you'll never know that she weighs 200 lbs, which is good for her.

That is one of the many problems that I have about weight/weight loss.. Society have taught us that if we lose weight we automatically have a V- line figure and that skinny is the way. My grandmother thinks that just because you lose weight, you will have a figure and that you have a shape. I like I said , I weigh 140 lbs, my top is smaller than my bottom. Intially, I was under the impression that I was shapeless, but then it was some men that I came across was fascinated by this I would ask some of them what is so great about my body? They would say my legs, my boobs( Maybe I should  not have asked that question after all) and especially my waistline because  they said that I have an hourglass( voluptuous) figure, though my top is smaller than my bottom.I'm still trying to see what they see, but I'm glad that those guys have seen past weight and what my appearance was to them. My grandmother always criticize my cousins because of their weight. The 200lbs reminds me of Lalia Ali. To me, Laila is in great shape and being a boxer you know she had to be. Just look her she weighs 160lbs, but doesn't look it. Far as the 190lbs one, my grandmother should learn this lesson. She has a nice looking face, but some guys joke about her " oblong" ( as they classify her figure which isn't right at all)figure she can lose all the weight she want , but if you didn't have the figure then, she's not going to have it now, no matter how big or small she is.

If doctors going to teach people about weight loss, they should teach them 1) Lose weight that is fitting for you and ask your doctor about what should be that persons's idea weight because a lot of them will not tell you that 2) There is nothing wrong with losing weight for health reasons, but we also need to teach people that being too skinny can be just as lethal. I guess those doctors never heard of ANOREXIA or BULIMA, That is why so many of them become like this.3) Full figured/voluptuous women can have great shapes as some skinny women and being in shape  doesn't always mean being skinny. There are just as many skinny people who are not in shape as what some doctors suggest that of overweight people. I may be 140lbs, but I'm in good shape.
