Ever since yesterday my eyes have been more puffy than P Diddy and I've been sneezing like mad. Also it's exacerbated my asthma so when I walk up a few flights of stairs I feel a bit breathless.I hate it....this is the crappiest spring in history that came a month late yet the allergies never fail to make their appearances dead on time.
Any other hay fever sufferers here and what do you use for yours? I've got over-the-counter stuff but I really hate taking any pharmaceuticals.
Anyone used herbal treatments for theirs?

@ PH
PLEEEEEEEEEEEEESE tell me about it!!!!!! Luckily I haven't started yet, usually starts in ernest in June- end of August... I hate it....
The usual hay fever meds work for me..... I will have to look into any herbal remedies, but Benedryl one a day usually works a treat and I have found in the past that after a week of taking it I don't need it take anymore for weeks, but everyone is different.
Surprising it has started so early for you...... maybe a visit to the doc might be necesssary as it is affecting your asthma.

I havent suffered with it since i was a kid but it kicks my mums arse ever damn year. Shes tried every trick inthe book and the once she swears by is Tesco's own brand Allergy tablets. She also uses Beconase (sp?) for the blocked nose and sinuses.
Miss Nelias right tho. U do need to go to a doctor if its affecting your asthma. A friend of the fam ended up in hospital with pnuemonia as a consequence of something similar so nip it in the bud early.

Respect....I went to see my GP this morning who prescribed a new inhaler that I'm to take at night before bed. He told me that at certain times the pollen levels are quite high, so such a reaction isn't uncommon, therefore it's likely a phase that will subside. I haven't been too bad yesterday and today so far.
I'm going to try and order some Yamoa powder for my asthma as it's supposed to eradicate it altogther as opposed to suppressing the symptons.

PH... I feel your pain.
I used to be under the care of an allergy & asthma specialist in the US... apparently there is NO such thing in the UK.
I used to use homeopathic remedies like bee pollen and magnesium alongside some of the regular meds and was well under control. Here in the UK, I am suffering and my doc told me that asthma and allergy rates here are worse. This morning, my eyes looked like Kermit the Frog's.
One thing to do is NOT open your windows at night and after rainfall... pollen gets in your home. They also suggest running an air filter in your bedroom, using special sheets and pillowcases, removing plush carpeting and not having pets. My hoover has a special filter on it as well. The allergy UK website is alright but they expect you to drop some £s on products.
For your asthma, make sure they give you the right inhalers... sounds like you need some steroidal control for inflammation.
If I find any magic remedies, I'll let you know... if you get the Yamoa powder, please post your reaction.
Peace!

YJA,
Yesterday, I was reading the aol news about the same thing on this is the worst year for allergies. Seemingly no matter where you turn there is the pollen waiting to greet you with misery. I dread Georgia in the Spring and especially in the Summer because it get hot and humid. The more hot and humid it is the worst your allergies will be. Also let not count out these skyscrapers, industrialized buildings and vehicle pollution that are contributing to the allergy /asthma crisis. It's so bad that I take allery medication orally and nose spray. If I don't have that I use VASELINE.
I also agree, get rid of that carpet. Just recently mom got rid of the carpet in our how and what a diifference it had made in our house. Thank god that we dont have a dog and even if we did, it only stay outside. The only thing that I do slighty different is to slightly keep the windows open. because it get too hot in out house( we don't have central air) . Also keeping the house close up is just as bad as being outside--in some ways it's better to be in the outside as there is something that can expel the dustmites and so on.

I also have asthma and hayfever, though my asthma was worse when i was younger. I have my regular ventolin inhaler (blue) and a becotide inhaler (brown) for before bed and mornings.
I get telfast antihistamine tablets on presription. I think it works out cheaper than over the counter and you get a months worth. I also take beconase nasal spray and opticrom eye drops both available over the counter.
You have to start taking the antihistamines before the season starts.
I have used the telfast/opticrom/beconase combination for a few years now and its been like i don't even have hayfever!!!
But different things work for different people. its just trial and error til you find a combi to suit you.

Could not believe when i logged on after sneezing my head off and cringing at the pins and needles in roof of my mouth and thinking the same as the title of this post! I was going to ask for tips so I'll be reading on. I haven't slept properly in days, early morning around 4:00am runny nose, itchy eyes, the jolly lot. Even spoke to a lady on the train this morning whose trying to fight her symptoms organically! I contracted the darn thing about 3 years ago and this year it came early and is a nuisance.
Moaning done!

New hay fever jab to protect against the onslaught of an invisible enemyBy Nigel Hawkes
Allergy sufferers may soon find relief from their affliction

A VACCINE may bring an end to the misery of millions who suffer from hay fever.
Results announced yesterday suggest that the vaccine, developed by Cytos, the Swiss biotechnology company, has long-lasting effects against sneezing, wheezing and itchy eyes — the symptoms of disabling allergies triggered in a variety of ways.
NI_MPU('middle');
Eight months after a small group of volunteers was vaccinated against the allergen produced by house dust mites, the great majority still showed excellent levels of protection.
Their sensitivity to the dust mites was reduced by a factor of more than 100, their symptoms were reduced by a third, and asthma attacks were eliminated by the vaccine.
Hay fever is a very common health problem. But Wolfgang Renner, the chief executive of Cytos, says that today’s treatments “target only the symptoms and offer just short-term amelioration of the disease.
Antihistamines can suppress symptoms, and inhaled steroids are also effective. But in serious cases sufferers have to treat themselves several times a day. Hay fever peaks in spring and summer, when pollen counts are high, but an equally common cause of allergies are dust mites. They eat flakes of human skin and live in mattresses, pillows and soft furnishings. A protein in their faeces triggers the allergic reaction.
Cytos has a range of vaccines in development, for treating a wide range of conditions ranging from Alzheimer’s disease to obesity and smoking. Encouraging results have been reported from preliminary trials with several of them. The latest data come from a trial of the dustmite vaccine in 20 volunteers aged between 18 and 56 and who had mild to moderate rhinitis and mild asthma.
The vaccine does not prevent the disease developing, but is designed to treat those who already have it. The allergy is caused by the immune system reacting to a normally harmless substance, causing the familiar symptoms.
Allergies have become more common, and the World Health Organisation estimates that more than a quarter of the population suffers from them.
Cytos’s vaccine consists of a length of DNA designed to provoke a normal immune response, attached to the dustmite allergen. When injected, it suppresses the allergic response that leads to sneezing and streaming eyes.
The volunteers were treated with injections, in a phase II trial designed to test the safety of the vaccine. Their response to the dust mite was tested after the treatment, which took several weeks. Of the 20, 17 volunteers were shown to be completely tolerant to the mites, showing no allergic reactions. Two others showed big improvements, and one failed to turn up for the tests.
Yesterday the company announced results of further tests, eight months after the initial treatment. The 19 still showed a hundred-fold improvement in tolerance to the dust mite.
They were also asked if they had noticed improvements in their daily life. The severity of symptoms — measured by clogged or runny nose, itching eyes and periods of sneezing — were less than a third of what they had been.
“Patients experienced a significant and lasting improvement, suggesting that the treatment effectively modified the underlying cause of the disease, Dr Renner said.
Cytos is developing a vaccine for hay fever caused by grass pollen, and allergies triggered by cat hair and tree pollen.
FROM POLLEN TO CAT HAIR
Three million people suffer from hay fever (allergic rhinitis) in Britain. Half a million are sufficiently seriously affected to seek medical help
A variety of triggers can set the condition off. Pollen — of grasses, weeds or trees — is the commonest seasonal cause. House dust mites and pet hair are common year-round triggers. Sufferers may also have asthma, which can get worse in the summers when pollen counts are high
Treatments today are greatly improved, and many people can control the condition effectively using inhaled corticosteroids, such as Flixonase, and antihistamine tablets
At this time of year tree pollen is the problem for hay fever sufferers. Silver birch pollen appears in April, continues for about a month and affects about a quarter of sufferers
The pollen count for today is forecast to be high

| This seems to be a bad year for allergy suffers, all three of my children suffer--I suggest ["hyssop"] to soften the symptoms...!

| In the meantime I got a box of Loratadine tablets which have worked suprisingly well since yesterday. I haven't had much problems so far and it seems to have put a halt on all the symptoms. It's done a much better job than the Benadryl tablets.

lol
Was just about to post about this. I've got tissues up my nose right now trying to fight it off. Funny thing is that most blame the pollen when its not, its a combination of the pollen with pollution that sets it off. I've been to so many diffrent countries and it dosen't bother me, back in london england and its..... BAM!
I'm a living breathing bag of snot and salt water. It sucks.
My aunty puts vaseline up her nose so it dosen't get caught up and Im on the net right now looking out for an air purifier Marcus Churchill mentioned on LBC a while ago... its got an oil burner and it sets itself to the sun in the winter so it wakes you up like the sun would normally.
I suffer from SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) and flipping hayfeaver so I'm depressed in the winter and sneezing in the summer. Just adds to the reasons I wanna live somewhere nice when Im older.

Hey Prince Hakeem,
That sounds like a real pain. I'm glad you asked for herbal remedies. Here's some info that may help.
http://www.herbalremediesinfo.com/hayfever.html
Also if you are interested in using essential oils you could try this.
Put 1 drop each of Chamomile and Lemon oil on a tissue and inhale as needed.
For your baths add: Chamomile 2 drops, Lemon 2 drops and Lavender 1 drop
For massage on the neck chest and back, in one teaspoon of a vegetable oil such as olive add: Chamomile 2 drops, Geranium 1 drop and Lemon 1 drop.
You should be able to get the oils in 10ml bottles which is about 200 drops per bottle. Those ingredients shouldn't set you back more than £15 but will last you a good few years .
Good Luck and check in if anything works!
