been a whil esince I took multivitamin...but if you're thinking of taking one..

do the research.....avoid "chelated" vitamins...and find out about when the stuff is released after digestion,etc...there is big difference...

I knew all this stuff when  I used to lift religiously..still have my old health magazines....will look up article about multi vitamins....

with all the shiny oil men taking off their shirts in pics/avatars..I'm certain somebody can give you quick advice though

couldn't find the article....

I used to take Centrum multivitamin/mineral supplement...then I took a generic brand...the generic had same dosage as centrum and was processed the exact same way......then I read information about how supplements are processed....and body absorption rates of vitamins/minerals depending on how the supp. was formed....

I did away with them altogether.... decided to just try and eat better foods...

shame that most of the info about this out there is slanted...health/muscle mags have tons of ads purchased by pil companies..so the can't bite the hand that feeds them

what things have been recommended to you,Hak?

I don't know if you guys have GNC (General Nutrition Center) stores over there, but I typically get the store brand multivitamin for active men, typically labelled "sport".  Unless you are bodybuilding, it doesn't matter very much what kind of multivitamin you take.  If you are trying to get huge, then I would recommend the "The Animal Pack".  Otherwise, any would do.

@Dtothej

I use to take Centrum a long time ago but it didn't do anything for me. My energy level didn't improve at all. I've dabbled with a few brands over the years but little to my satisfaction. Even when I was taking the African Mariandina multivitamins they (sadly) didn't do the trick.

However lately I've been taking Solgar EarthSource and found that I've had more energy throughout the day. Because it contains tons of herbal extracts and contains spirulina which helps you to absorb all the nutrients and improve your digestion I've been able to function a lot better and found that I've been able to cope with stress a bit more.

Depending on your body's ability to absorb nutrients it's better to get vitamins that have well over the 100% recommended daily intake which is what Earth Source has. Tablets that only have 100% or less don't really provide you with the nutrients you need because when you smoke, drink alcohol, eat fast foods etc you lose that percentage pretty quickly.

@ThothB3

We have GNC over here but most of their vitamins don't give me what I'm looking for. Plus I don't bodybuild like I did back in the day.

multis are to be taken to protect your body if/when you aren't able to get what are considered proper doses of vitamins/minerals.... like an insurance.

I think the energy boost is something totally different...might wanna look into getting a nutrition book and  just eating the foods/herbs that are extracted in that Solgar....and increasing your intake of fiber(to aid digestion)...

They say the best way to get vitamins/minerals is through food....

supplements/pills are to be used only if it's not possible/realistic that you can eat the proper stuff everyday.....

yo, in terms of taking more than the recommended dosage of vitamins and minerals...I feel that the extra stuff is wasted....and just runs out of your body.....and at some levels too much of certain nutrient(in supplement) can actually hurt you.....

different medical and health opinions about this topic...

----------------

what is spirulana...by the way..?

Some do give me an energy boost though. There's this one generic store brand(dont' sleep on generic brands) called whole source for men.  I get a real strong boost out of it.  Calcium/magnesium/zinc is also a good suppliment for men(absorbs vitamin and keeps the buddy strong).

hairs are dead cells....think the matter nails are made from are dead also...I had a nutrition book that detailed the vitamins .minerals that give you overall health and can possibly  lead to "healthy looking" hair or nails....

I'll look it up....but most o fth claims on these pills are unfounded..in the USA..these supplements don't fall under jurisdiction of the FDA..so they can make claims to do things and have ore leeway in terms of that than other foods....

LOL!

I use super one from Holland & Barrett, Fantastic stuff.  I challenged myself to see how long i could last on liquid only, and did well for three whole days on home made fruit, carrot juice and Super One tablets.  Strangely enough i had more energy and felt great after day two which was Tuesday.  I do believe the vitamins had a lot to do with it.  Next time i am going to try and go for 7 days, see how i do then.

They cost about £16 for 100 tablets.

I also take Echinacea when i think my immune system needs boosting i.e. when feeling cold coming on.

@Prince Why don’t you try naturals such as drinking a pint of cooled boiled water with a whole lemon juice (you can add a table spoon of honey for taste & energy) every morning, a glass of carrot juice (30 min after lemon water).  Also drinking a large glass of cooled water (boiled) with slices of ginger 10 minutes before every meal.  I know it's a lot of work for early morning? but they do promise to make you fill fantastic in no time and also make proper use of all the vitamins you take during the day.  I usually do my preparing while doing my ironing and if I have no time I take the lemon to work and prepare there and buy the carrot juice from work as well.

Also snack on fruits containing energy giving fructose such as Dates, which are yummy, low in calorie and contain many essential vitamins and minerals.

Try it for a month and see how you feel.

Thanks for the info. I was actually thinking of making my own smoothies once my supply of vitamins runs out. I used to make all kinds of concoctions out of grapes, mangoes, apples, tangerines etc but time hasn't been on my side for the past several months but been quite busy. Things should be slowing down come next month so I'll have a bit more time on my hands to take these 'vitamins' in liquid form.

You know if you're having a balanced diet then all of this is unnecessary right?  As long as you're eating fruits, veg, lean meats,  carbs, fibre, bran etc then you have no need of these things.  They can even have adverse affects or none at all.  Your liver will only take what it needs and the excess will either pass through or poison you.

Doubt anybody would believe that though.  Billions have been spent convincing you that these "vitamins" and other placebos are essential.  Amusing if it wasn't another example of our consumerism and ability to buy into any crap sold to us...

^^^^^^^OK

If some people don't have the time to eat the recommended five portions of fruit and vegetables a day then they take vitamins to make up for all the nutrients they miss out on.

I ain't looking for taste as much as I am end results. I'm aware of what the nutritional value for a lot of foods should be but we all know the nutrients in UK soil have been depleted heavily and that imported foods lose some of their goodness.

You go to countries where the environment is clean and the food is organic your body derives more benefits by even eating a bit less than you would over here.

You know as well as I do none of the fruit and veg in the shops is from England or not likely even europe.  Spend your money dude.

I'm talking about black people buying into things and spending money on anything.  Any pap will do... we buy it.  I'm talking about your topic here and now.  You're talking about Makosi like I'm some sulky five year old.  Who's insulting whom?

I remember you telling me this before actually...Though I only remembered now. I haven't spent ridiculous amounts of money on vitamins, but what you say is interesting and definitely not impossible. They do it with everything else, make us believe we need stuff that we dont, and we all know the pharmacuetical industry is no way exempt from being corrupt.

Guess this is something I need to think about a little harder...and look a little deeper.

**sighs** For goodness sake man.....

Well then we're both guilty for reading into things as it wasn't my intention to "play you like you're some dumb b**tch". You'd KNOW if I was insulting you cos I'm not afraid to spit fire when I'm ready, but that was not my intent.

However I will apologise for the misunderstanding. Maybe it's lateness or end of the week stress, who knows..... confused3
