But

I was in the states a few weeks ago and everytime I go there I can't believe the amount of fat people I see. Especially the young women, man was I dissappointed.. every booty had it's own area code.( admittedly their were a few fine looking sisters but the sheer numbers or the mass of the fat ones overshadowed them). 

I think I know the main cause though it's obvious, and that's fast food chains especially Mcdonalds, but that's not it, it's what they serve, I was stunned when I saw my Big Extra.. it was twice the size of the Canadians ones and their was a family with little kids tipping the BMI, all of em sitting there comfortable and enjoying their gigantic burgers. Something told me this was a regular thing.

Talk about a never ending munchie.

I went from one extreme to the other trying to nail down the problem of fat people.


At first I thought it was because Americans ate too much.

Then when I read up on the consequences of all these chemical preservatives preventing the absorption and breaking down of these foods in our bodies; then I was convinced that the problem wasn't the amount of food we ate.   The problem was chemically induced.

Then somebody told me that no...Americans ate much more than anybody else on the planet.

I used to go to Canada all the time but didn't see that much of a difference between the proportions of fast food I got there and what I got in the States.

It wasn't until I went to Europe and saw how small the portions were overthere and how skinny everyone was compared to those I saw back in America.  Now I believe the problem is both the amount of chemicals pumped into the found AND the amount they eat.

It's not because we eat too much, it's because we exercise too little.  Myself... i'm not fat (6' 0'' and 140) but lots of people I know are.  I know this is kinda wrong... but fat people disgust me.

I eat too, but because I don't sit around all day watching TV I'm not the size of a blimp.  That's my spin at least.

I don't know bro, though I'll agree with you on the  persavitives, the main reason why I only buy organic from the grocery store though I'm starting to suspect it's not all persavtive free.

But from my experiences your burgers are twice the size of ours, I went to detroit and I asked for 4 cheezeburgers because their usually small and the cashier was looking at me and wondering if I had the metabolism of those hot-dog munching asians and kept asking if I was "sure".  confused3

And your right Meat consumption is number one in America and your up there in Chocolate consumption as well.

I think the numbers for AA's are a bit understated.  I see it more in the mid 40%.  The problem stems from many of us adopting the poor man's diet of processed carbohydrates.  Back in the 1930's manufacturers figured out how to take the nutrients out of flour products and create more yield.  As a result people consume too many empty carbs and it is stored as fat. Diets shifted from protein to that of breads and sugars.

Case in point:

Look at the Atkins diet, anyone who does this rapidly loses weight versus other diet fads.  Excess Carbs=Killer unless you run marathons.

Then you have all of these food allergies,  eating poison is too harsh on the body yet we who are lactose intolerant drink milk, eat cheese, consume ice cream and other cow products. WHile the body deals with poisons everything else is stored as fat.  Too much stress on the body.

If anyone halved their carb intake for two months and ate more protein and fats they would almost surely lose 5-10 lbs just laying in bed

It has been proven that when you cut carbs and eat fats and protein you train your body to burn fat.  I researched it, applied it and at rest I averaged a weight loss of 5lbs per week.  But I have seen far greater results in others.  You don't want to go out and eat Pig fat but once you train your system you can process fat at such an efficient rate that it will cause no further harm.

Fast foods are the culprit.

They put all these preservatives in the meat to keep it from spoiling and when you eat it it doesn't break down and metabolize in the body fast enough.

It keeps Americans fat and sloppy.


Plus it's all the carbohydrates so many of our people eat.

Every family gathering you have tons of potato salad, macaroni & cheese, mashed potatoes, spaghetti......all these foods Black people weren't designed to eat.


I'm sure you know that many Somalis get diabetes with in  5 years of coming West.

That's why I like the NOI's plan of growing thier own food and fixing everything from scratch.

Their women used to be taught how to make and bake bread and cake, how to properly clean meat and soak vegetables to get the poison and irritants out of it.

They were growing thier own vegetables and animals on the farm and slaughtering them properly.

We messed around and lost it all.

Yes, we christian especially in rural areas and in urban areas where we can have community gardens, food cooperatives and such, do the same.

I grow and can most of my veggies myself. my wife bakes bread, makes cheese and butter, I shrimp and crab when I am back home in SC, we hunt deer, rabbits, squirrels,dove and quail

we usually share a side of beef with my sisters and parents, buy organic chicken from food cooperatives, as well as milk and eggs,

we use farmers markets and rarely go to commercial groceries stores

we go to orchards and fruit patches in season for fruit, we make our baskets, still sew alot of our clothes

and use no chemicals or very little in cleaning

and eat no fast or processed foods

Do not indulge on animal fats. These fats will cause you to have poor health.

I am an American who has lost about 70 pounds eating lots of raw vegetables and fruits instead of processed carbs and sugar/high fructose corn syrup.

I eat a lot of olive oil and eat plenty of raw nuts such as pecans, walnuts and cashews.

Man....  I only wish i could all the pecans, walnuts and cashews and fruit but after I hit the age of eleven I developed a food allergy to all of the above.  70lbs is impressive! Congratulations!

1) athletic means healthy, active lifestyle, not fat but fit, either a current athlete or a former athlete.  I play tennis, golf, soccer, a bit of rugby, mountain climbing and biking, rowing and kayaking and backpacking so I stay in good shape, but muscles to show off, NO.  Muscles for work and active lifestyle for sure

cant say I run 10k metres, I run cross country and long distance--hence 6'2

 LOL, this Athletic thing is a joke. Athletic could be a fat guy wear matching head and wristbands!  I was reading up on this "fat and fit" nonsense that is created to appeal to the emotions of these clowns who lack eating discipline.

Athletic builds can range from L.L. Cool J to Mike Tyson and Lennox Lewis or go as skinny as Young Buck from G-Unit fame. 

Currently I'm in some of the worse shape in my life but People would classify me as Athletic or even small when I weigh nearly 217lbs.  I'm about the size of a small NFL Runningback, can play about 3 Full court Basketball pickup games before being seriously winded and again I would likely fall into the category of Big and not Athletic outside the USA.

Now according to a few friends across the pond of mine an athletic 217lbs with roughly 16% body fat would be huge by British Standards.  On the other hand a Crack addict 160lbs on a man would easily be classified as Athletic in America as well as 6'5" 300lb man who had a minimum gut.  It gets tricky.

It was worse in the US Army because they had a weight chart that allowed some seriously fat fukks 5'5" at 207 lbs who ran 2 miles in under 17 minutes, did 40 push-ups and 50 sit-ups in 2 minutes respectively and they fit the criteria as fit or Athletic.

I go to the supermarket and have to walk past 5 rows of

1. chips and cookies and candy,

2. cereals that should be in the cookies section,

3. 5000 different flavours of ice cream/frozen, frozen Aunt Jemima this and that, frozen pizza, frozen chips etc...

4. An isle solely for drinks so sweet your teeth rot just by looking at them.

5. a  whole section of store made cakes, desserts and crap.

African American diets are full of crap because thats what the supermarkets are selling them, the cheapest crappest junkiest food they can get.

It is called constraint and control!  In the Past we had one of the healthiest Diets on the Planet but now we fell off.  There are plenty of McDonald's, Burgerkings and KFC's where I live  and I simply walk on by.  When you go food shopping you have to create a list of things you  NEED containing the nutrients your body needs  as opposed to the junk food that you want.  We already know that  Black Diabetes is majorly caused by all our excess sugar and Carb consumption, right?  Stay away from all the extra breads, candy, honey-buns, Soda and other junkfoods.  You can substitute by purchasing:

  1. Drinks sweetened with Splenda
  2. buying sugarless peanutbutter and jellies
  3. sugarless pies (if they are made with real fruit they already contain fructose)
  4. Carb smart pancake and muffin batter
  5. Eat chips made from whole grains or in moderation
  6. Bake you own low carb cookies.
When you do your own cooking you control the carbs, fat and price.  when you go into a store with a list youo avoid excessive purchases because you already have a game plan!  Just like everything else plaguing the AA community this one comes down to personal responsibility and naivity.  We can do better!niceone.gif

I'm over 6 foot and don't weigh 200 pounds in boots soaking wet yet I've been called fat a couple times on this site by people who've never seen me in thier life.

its called SELF control, if you know what is good--pointed out by other posters on here, then make a shopping list and go to them and stay out of the corner convenient stores

Supermarkets are big stores not the corner shops that sell chips and candy-- and even these shops dont make you buy anything, you choose it for yourself


I dig what you're saying about personal responsibility and I agree to a certain extent; but our government has a responsibility also.  They are supposed to be looking out for us and keeping the public safe rather than turning a blind eye to all the poisions we are being bombarded with on a daily basis.


They allow these corporations to put so much antibiotics, hormones, chemicals, toxins, preservatives in the food that they know will make us fat, sick, give us diabetes and cancer.
And worst of all they let them get away with lying to us so that we don't know any better.

The average citizen doesn't know they are being poisoned by their diets soda and all the MSG they're putting in the foods; it's the government's responsibility to regulate these things and protect us from harm.
