If you have a great deal of melanin, and you live in a country where there is little sunshine, it will be harder for you to get enough vitamin D (which needs sunshine for its production in your body). You may then suffer from vitamin D deficiency, which could cause a bone disorder such as rickets.

Rickets is a deficiency of Vitamin D which is also known by many other names like Osteomalacia, Renal Osteodystrophy, Paediatric Osteomalacia, Vitamin D deficiency and Renal Rickets. This disease involves softening and weakening of bones due to deficiency of Vitamin D. This softening occurs from a loss of the mineral calcium from the skeleton as a result of which bones become flexible and gradually are molded by forces, such as bearing weight, that are exerted on them. This condition could lead to deformities of the body structure.

What are the symptoms associated with rickets?

Pain in the bones of Arms, Legs, Spine, Pelvis.

Skeletal deformities including Bow legs, Forward projection of the breastbone (pigeon chest or pectus carinatum), Funnel chest (pectus excavatum), "Bumps" in the rib cage (rachitic rosary) and Asymmetrical or odd-shaped skull.

Spine deformities (spine curves abnormally, including scoliosis or kyphosis).

Pelvic deformities.

Increased tendency toward bone fractures.

Dental deformities.

Delayed formation of teeth.

Defects in the structure of teeth, holes in the enamel.

Increased incidence of cavities in the teeth (dental caries).

Progressive weakness.

Decreased muscle tone (loss of muscle strength).

Muscle cramps.

Impaired growth.

Short stature (adults less than 5 feet tall) .

Fever or restlessness, especially at night.

If you are black, you are more likely to have a vitamin D deficiancy. Why? Because black people have a natural sunscreen. People buy these product in stores SF 15 SF 30 but blacks have a sunscreen of about 500. Wow. And many of whom have lactose intolerance so they avoid milk, which has added Vitamin D so that you can absorb the calcium. So most blacks should take a Vitamin D supplement. But ask your doctor how much because Vitamin D is a fat soluable vitamin which means you can basically overdose on it and cause a lot more damage than good.
