LadyDay depends what you want it for...

To get fit Id say do some boxing.  Its the best physical work out all round with no comparison and I mean boxing not boxercise LOL

To defend self on road Id say do some Judo or Jujitsu.  It's more suited to realistic situtuations.  Most fights on road turn into grappling and holding VERY quickly.  You throw one or two punches and then roll about on the floor LOL...  Learn how to do Jujitsu and you will be ok with this.

Wing Chun was developed by a woman, so the tradition says.  She learned her skill practising down a well.  Her husband named it after her when she died.  It is for close quarters combat, lots of hits and blocks... quite hard to learn but effective I suppose.  My ex was very good at it.

For relaxation and so on try Tai Chi...

@LadyDay my brother teaches Wing Chung. But pound for pound in terms of fighting Jui jitus is the best system and easily learnt and remembered which is important. A handful of techniques will last you a life time. Wing Chung and a whole heap of systems are too long to reduce to basic essences.

It also seems like some made up nonsense to me... some "latest fad"... the new "in thing" in hollywood.

Any new thing that actors are all flocking too is immediatley discredited and silly IMO

I look on that foolishness like Kabbalah LOL  Now don't go trying to school me on Krav Maga... I have heard the spiel and frankly Im not impressed!

There are LOADS of gyms about to do boxing, it depends on where you live.  There should be one in your local area.  In London the amount of gyms is silly LOL They are all over the place.  Look in yellow pages or Thompson for your local area... or even google the search...

Despite the image boxing is female friendly.  You don't even have to spar or fight if you don't want to, just learning the techniques and doing the training will do wonders for you.

Cash
I know you like your boxing man, Im playing with you.  KM is joke tings to me though man...

@ all
Like I said at first though it depends what you want it for and as I said for fighting and defending self on road, do JuJitsu...  For fitness boxing...

Do thai or kick boxing for fitness and and one on one fighting do Wing chun or Ju jitsu for self defense techniques. Ju jitsu is the most complete martial art so it is very broad and may not be specific enough to your needs. Taekwondo is also good to do.

Tae Kwon Do is not a good option for self defense LadyDay... it's not applicable to real life.  I see it as more of a competition sport, something in the olympics.  Not good for a real fight on road.

LOL I know this is gonna sound silly but watch the ultimate fighting championships and watch the guys and what they styles are and how they fare against other exponents of different styles.

Lady Day what is your goal for learning the martial arts? Is it for fitness, recreation or for self defense.

In my opinion Wing Chun  on its own is not incomplete for self defense and its not very good at all for fitness purposes. Avoid Taekwondo at all costs, thats crap.

Have a look at things like Brazilian Jujitsu, Thai Boxing and Judo. Traditional Jujitsu is good, but progression is kinda slow.

Wing Chun lacks areobic fitness. Brazilian JJ no strikes and only good for ground fighting plus expensive and attracts mainly men interested in MMA. Judo no strikes and only good for throws using clothes and ground work. Traditional Ju Jitsu may not be arobic enough and a bit slow. Thai boxing is good but it is just a sport not designed for self defense also sparring may be intense (could be full contact) and it is not really technical and does not consider street situations. Taekwondo may have the right balance as it is both a energetic sport and self defense system, it is well rounded only lacking ground skills, its good for beginners, has many schools and attracts a wide range of practitioners. I don't actually believe there are any crap martial arts, each has there strengths and its more down to the individual.

Pound for pound there is no doubt in my mind that Kung Fu is the most complete fighting form there is. Of the many styles of Kung FU, Wing Chun is the most easily learnt and most effective for women as it does not depend on physical strength but teaches you how to use your opponents strength against them.

It's the real deal. Other Arts might be good but few give you a sense of discipline and spirituality (without being religious or hippyish) that Kung Fu does. It is a system developed over thousands of years by one of the oldest and wisest peoples on earth.

In learning about your opponent's body you naturally learn about your own and (if you enjoy it) you will naturally enhance your aerobic fitness through your willingness to practice and train your body to necessary levels.

You might have guessed by now that i study Wing Chun Kung Fu, so i might seem a little biased. In my defence, I have studied other Martial Arts in the past (Karate, Tae Kwon Do, Judo) but have found that nothing else compares.

Simply put, if you put a Kung Fu expert in the ring with an expert in any other form (including Krav Maga, which is not a martial art but a set of techniques designed to kill in the shortest possible time) the Kung Fu-ist would win out every time.

There, I'm done. ;)

Don't think you will like it as BJJ is submission wrestling with no striking hardly any standing fighting. BJJ is not the best if you want to learn self defence and improve aerobic fitness neither is it good if you don't want to wrestle on the floor with guys interested in mixed martial arts competition. Its not really practical for most conflicts on the street unless an attacker puts you on the floor and tries to hold you down (could happen during rape). I think a martial art that teachs you how to strike so you can get away would probably be better option. Traditional JJ is better if you want to learn all aspects of fighting including striking, ground fighting and submissions but it is less energetic as there is no full force sparring. Kungfu maybe good if you find a good school but it tends be stiff they may teach you some hocus pocus and the classes are not that energetic.

You should look around because it really depends on the teachers but I do think learning to strike, good physical conditioning and fun are the most important.

It all boils down to what you want to get out of it.

I've dabbled in Kung Fu, Wing Chun, Tae Kwon Do, Shoto Kan, Wegi Ryu, Aikido and Muy Thai.

Out of all these Arts Muy Thai offered the complete physical workout.  I lost the most weight and toned all of my body.  I learned an extremely efficient manner of self defense, My strength and Stamina increased dramatically and it allowed for competitive bouts.

I would suggest this art form for anyone.  Or try any other form of kick boxing.  The work out will definitely tighten the arse, brighten your complexion and get the mind running like clockwork!

Kickboxing or better yet Muy Thai may be the art that you are looking for.  Not sure how England is set up in regards to martial arts centers but if you can get the chance I would say go for it!  Tyr it for 6 months and relish the results.
