Lol....i have been puzled by all this none sense about black people needing sunscreen.....i have news for all of you: In Africa, i NEVER met any one who used or even knew what the bloody hell sunscreen is.....and you all know that well, thats where the sun is at....and no skin cancer rubish either.....the best thing to do is not to lie in the sun like white folks do.....what i noticed is that back home people did NOT sunbath.....people were always under a shade or using umbrellas as conver from the sun.....

So just keep away from too much of it and you should be fine.....like Blackbeauty said, you never know what they put in there or if its even suitable for black skin.....

Not starting the Light/Dark thing...but it really depends on the shade and tone of your skin...Obviously lighter black people will tend to burn more easily has there less melanin in there skin. When I have been away, I have burnt so easily because my skin is quite fare even though i'm black. And dimoke, i know your saying that black people back home didn't even know about sunscreen and tings, but they wouldne't because there skin adapts to the sun. They can only really tan by going to hotter climates abroad.....black people who live in hotter climates have very radiant glowing smooth skin has if it's in perfect condition.

Well anyway, i'm going away this summer and i'm going to come back sporting a deep glowing tan that even black people will be jealous off...! LOL

Hmmmm....interesting post!

No I personally never tried suntan lotion. I remember when I  was in school and we use to go on field trips all the White teachers would make it a piont to remind everyone that they should be using sunscreen- even the Black students!

I use to laugh just thinking abou it! I've always said when I started hearing about numberous cases of Blacks, espcially AAs, catching skin cancer then I'd consider it!

As of now I'm keeping my $3.00 (or whatever sunscreen costs) in my pocket.........

As a rule we don't need sunscreen. However, there are exceptions. I have chocolate brown skin, was born in the Caribbean and use sunscreen, protection factor 30, otherwise I get heat rash!

(warning gettin off topic):

I've read a lot of people debating on whether Dorothy Dandridge was 'Biracial' or not!

To be honest with you, I've read 3 biographies on her and never found any proof that she was. I've seen a picture of her mother Ruby, who was a dark skinned woman but never her father. From the biographies I've read on her they claimed her father was a light skinned Black man, & his mother was a quadroon! In one of the books the author says dorothy (and her sisters) and her mother Ruby use to stay with their father and his mother (Dorthory's grandmother) before Ruby took the children, ran off, and left  her husband .

I doubt at the time period if her father would have been White, she would have stayed with him and his mother. Possible, but highly unlikely considering the interracial marriage laws of the time.

I will say this. I believe Dorothy Dandridge was MULTIRACIAL, but Biracial (meaning having 2 parents from a different race), no!  I don't think so.............

Now as African Americans we have sort of a natural barrier from the harmful effects of the sun. The darker you are the more of a barrier you have. But, if you have lighter skin, sunscreen is something you may have to concern yourself with.

Also, knowing the affects of the sun and the steps needed to safer sun
exposure.  Have you ever driven your car with the sun beaming directly on your arm..darn it's hot?   I'd rather be safe than sorry.  Plus, I use sunscreen because I see how old women who've had too much sun exposure in their younger days there skin is yuck..plus as a moisturizer before applying my makeup before going out in the sun in the summertime.  I've been a victim my face skin tone not matching the rest of my body.

On the basis of having an Uncle passing away 3 years ago of skin cancer...  I would suggest being careful with your skin and if possible use sunscreen if you are going to spend long periods of time outdoors...

Although melanin offers us a great deal of protection, it still does not guarantee that you will not be susceptible to skin cancer...  Although, cases are rare... it does happen...

Better to be safe than sorry!

This topic really is individual based. I agree with Finest G that it depends on yr skin tone, but none the less i have had black friends go on hols and over do it and come back only to peel like crackling.

I dont think that we that are born over here need to be comlacent.  We aint as used to the sun as our families back home.  They can work bare back on steaming pitch in degrees that most would find unbearable plus they dont have the pullutants in the extremes that we have have here which gives no strength to our natural protection (melanin).

Sayin all of that, I have a friend in the Bahamas that wears sunblock and the highest spf at that, to avoid getting darker.  I was disappointe but it some kind of cultural thing there confused3.  She is quiet a dark sister and assures me that if she didnt use it she'd be way darker... *i dont know why that matters either.. but like i say.. cultural*.  I go on hols to get darker... but i dont have to live there.

Like i said before... its an indiviual thing but i do think precautions do still need to be made. Especially as most of us are foreigners to the sun.

This thread is jokes blacks using SUNSCREEN helloooo!!!! lol

When i was in the Caribbean i saw a black gal from NYC sunbathing in the MID DAY SUN. My cousins were shocked and looked at the gal like she mad. Blacks or (REAL Africans) don't need suncreen. What they need is to use IS their common sense. If the suns hot take shade, dress sensibly, don't spend too long in the mid day heat and you'll be fine. My family have been living under the sun for hundreds of years and NO reported sun cancer. Hell i love it when i come back from holiday with a dark ebony rich tan, my skin looks much smoother and better.

OF Course enjoy the sun; but also respect it.

ps. like mi gone splash out on sunblock mi backside*kiss teet*

Seriously do take precautions when going in the sun.....Black brits especially has our skin is not adaptive to the sun like others in hot climates.......I am going to be using sunscreen this year when i go into the sun because I'm going to be in the hot sun every single day working for 3 months so i'm being careful! I will tan nicely and get a nice even tone, but u need to take caution seriously!

You don't have to be light skinned to get sunburn, and that's true, but if your light. the sun will take a deeper effect on your skin sometimes....! So be careful...! Trust me, sometimes i have burnt at times in some areas.

Had this discussion in Oasis yesterday.

We dont need sunscreen because in our original countries we stay out of the direct sun.  In hot countries people take siestas, naps, wear long loose clothing (not bikini's), wear hats and generally seek shade and not stand like lemons in the sun...  They go about their business in the hot sun and live in it yes but they dont stand still in the sun trying to let it burn them...  Melanin protects you if you live like a normal person!

The difference is that in the west some of us are adopting European practices and engaging in SUNBATHING which is a silly thing to do.  Nobody in Botswana for example sits out at midday in the direct sun for hours on end with no clothes on.... its plain stupid.  Over here now that is what some black people are doing.  It is not a natural practice (unless you are a lizard) so to rely on natural melanin alone is inadvisable... not to mention the hole in the ozone layer.

Simply

If you are going to behave like a European and partake in sunbathing, tanning salons (lol) and all sorts of funniness... then protect yourself like one or burn!!!  Dont think you can't

simple!

saw a white man

burn himself raw in southern africa

he looked like he went 12 rounds with tyson

while drunk

the next day

he was out there again

deck chair, body spread out seeking more radiation

is that rational behavior?

why would black people be jeolous of you because your skin tone may be what some people call desireable.  I am black dark skinned and I am not jeolous of any person regardless of the colour of skin.  I know I am great.  I need no one to tell me otherwise.  and to all black dark skinned women you are great love yourself dont watch no one or compare yourself as you will lose sight of who you are.

Peace

I wear sunscreen for the UVA protection. I know that we age well because of the melanin in our skin, but I wear sunscreen to help prevent premature aging.

Lol @ Jah Jah child, I totally agree!

I once got sunburnt bad on my back..........the first time ever and l'm dark skinned. Reason being, I laid out directly in the sun imitating the tourists and went home with a very sore back. Serve mi right, l never ever tried that again!

I've never used sunblock and never plan to. At my daughters nursery they gave me a form to fill out to say whether or not they should put sunblock on her. I put no thank you, and I provide them with her moisturiser and shes good to go. I make sure mine and her skin is well moisturised and thats all is needed.
