If any of you here have had bank charges in the past six years and you haven't claimed your money back you may want to look into claiming your money back. I don't actually disagree with bank charges if the amount of money taken is not excessive.
Anyway because people have been claiming back their charges for a while and i saw it on Watchdog i thought that i would give it a go.

I started of my process in early March first requesting my six years of bank statements and then i sent my letter requesting a refund of my charges on the 17th of March. I was claiming back £1,600. I was a student not that long ago and so i had quite a lot of charges as some students do.

My bank has offered me a settlement of £1,000 but i will reject that and ask them for the full amount that i am seeking and see where it goes from there. In the back of my mind i was thinking that anything may come of this but it really is and i am so pleased.

Has anybody here claimed back their bank charges?
If you are thinking of claiming you should do it.

This website does have some helpful advice on this-

Just a one point.

Before you reject their offer, check to see if whether the repayment means that the charges you would incur can be considered 'reasonable'.

The legislation allows you to claim back charges deemed illegal (i.e. because they are over an amount reasonable to cover the bank's costs).  Therefore, holding out to get the whole lot back, say, would mean the bank doesn't charge you anything.  They are allowed to make some charges, it is just a question of how much?

Backatya thank you for your advice. I will give them a call tomorrow and see if i can get them to go a least a bit higher. I may accept then because i do not really want to drag this thing out with me having to send even more letters.
I will let you all know the outcome of this tomorrow.

I think that i may have a strong case with them. That money that they refund to me will probably treat me and my mother to a nice holiday this summer. niceone.gif

I have got my bank up to £1,300 but i have not accepted that yet. I may well do. £1,600 was the figure including interest if i would have had to go to court interest came to £300. My actual charges were exactly £1,300 without interest on top.

I was not expecting to ever see my money back this time last year so i may accept and call it a day. They said i could go the court to get the full amount.

^^That´s good to hear.

I think itś wise to open another current account elsewhere first, if you haven´t alreay done so, chances are they will close that account if asked to pay up.

First of all I started a new job just before Christmas and I had to go abroad recently, I´m just recovering from a double whammy.

My bank was charging me for clearing a visa payment 2-3 days AFTER I used my debit card(yes debit!!!),  basically  their charges were due 2-3 days after, they took their charges which sent me over  then paid my visa debit 2-3 days after I used it and charged me for both.
:shock::shock::shock:

They told me businesses don´t take money for 2-3 days after the transaction even though a block is made for the amount at the time I used my debit card,
blkblahblkblah

To which I replied ...that´s not my problem a debit gives access to only the money I have at that time, wthout arguement they put back £50 worth of charges, I need to start another account for my wages first then I´ll go after them for true.

Jay Jay i think that it is illegal for banks to close peoples accounts now just because they claimed their bank charges.
I do have another savings account with another bank so i could always use that if they did close my account. I don't think that they will do though. I have 2 accounts with them anyway and this account i am claiming for i do not even really use anymore.

I accepted their offer of £1,300 which was my full 6 years of charges without interest and in 14 days my bank will credit the money back to my account.

If you feel that you have been unfairly charged have a word the customer complaints team first and see if they maybe able to sort something out for you if not you could pursue a claim if you wanted to.

Webly12 they are all paying just that with some they may be a bit easier than others but in the end if you persist you will get your money back.
I am trying to get my sister to chase up her hubby's bank charges for a closed account. I am also trying to get my brother to get his money back as well.

I´m with the shabbey...... looking at some of the peoples forums posts in the link below they play hardball with your account BUT.....they still pay up, I have a branch saver account with them but this is no big thing, I´ve just opened up a current account with A&L which will takeover my wages, debits, s/o etc. and I´ve just ordered my previous 6 years worth of statements @ £10

cheers.

I am with HSBC and I have been told of my overpayment of charges comes to £965 plus the interest on top of that.. Their 21 days for a reply is almost up.

I have had 4 accounts with this branch so I might well chase after the other three and see what comes.

They were happy to send me my 6yrs of statement free of costs. My ex use to work at the same branch and she thought banks were wonderful,, I guess she has woken up by now..
