.....whilst I'm 4,000 miles away!

My brother & brother-in-law are dealing with it, but is it worth reporting to the police now, on my return next week or not at all?

Not sure what has been taken yet, but it seems my brother-in-law disturbed them after they'd unplugged one DVD player (we have several), so I'm worried that they'd come back.

What do I do???

Sorry to hear that Vezz :(

I'm not sure what to say to be honest...I'm guessing you should call the police as the earlier you report it the better (especially for insurance purposes), but then you're not there to say what exactly is missing.

Hmm....I think you should report it.

Vezz...important...very important you need to get your folks back in the UK to check that these theives haven't taken any of your personal info, like utility bills, bank statements or anything with your personal details.. or else you will start to find they'll be taking out credit, loans and sh*t in your name.....

and yes i would report it if your stuff is marked, it might turn up at a car boot or something..

Vee.

Sorry to hear about this. Report it to the police immediately so you can get a crime number so it is logged and in the system. I trust your in law has secured your place so that other dyam theives don't take the opportunity to take every thing else you have.

Other than that not much you can do. When you have time check how they entered and make changes to your home. The police will offer that info or if they don't ask for the Crime Prevention Unit or whatever it is called in your local division/station.

Hard to do but don't worry about it. It is property and if insured you will get it back. If not get insured and take it as a lesson.

Most crime of this nature is opportunisitic. You give them the opportunity they will take it.

Peace.

My brother said the place is a mess.

They took my Nan's jewellery, a PS2, xbox and a dvd player. They also took Hubby's car keys. Luckily, it's parked at his Mum's house otherwise they'd had his work tools. I wouldn't know about the utility bills until I get home, I guess.

b**tards took all the games out of the boxes, so they had time.

The police have been informed and will come tomorrow at 8.30 - my brother is sorting it.

Funnily enough, I was going to cancel the insurance, but my mind told me not to.

This has really spoilt my holiday...

Sorry to hear this.:( We were burgled in April 06' but they only took money, they never took the phones, DVD's, TV or anything. We were in the house asleep when it happened. The police said it was probably drug addicts and they just wanted some quick money.

Right, my advice: most definitely report it. And try not to worry, although obviously that is easier said than done. :(

Vezz..I know its difficult..but it is really important you make sure these theive didn't hold of your personal info....I had a colleague a few years back who got burgled, they took this stuff..and nearly got a mortgage in his name, they rang up thousands on store cards, got credit on electrical items...it took him months to sort out his credit rating.

if you;re the type to typically keep utility bills and bank statements in a single place...then i seriously advise you to have it checked for missing doc asap...especially make sure that they are in sequence....the gits that did my colleague were clever and took from the middle so he didn't even realise until weeks afterwards

Well, I can't expect my brother to go through my bills, so it;ll have to wait until I get back next week.

I've just realised they took my engagement ring, which needed to be fixed.

That's what tipped me over the edge.......

Vezz sorry to hear what happened. You did the right thing in reporting it. Did they take anything like mobile phones? If so ring the company immediately! All bills THEY incur - YOU'D be liable for if you don't. Also any credit cards and the like.

Really sorry about your engagement ring - is there something unique about it - even names engraved would be a start to help the police know what to look for.

Trying hard not to think about it but it's hard, especially being so far away.

They went into my oldest son's room and pulled his clothes out of his wardrobe. I think they must have got his gameboys as well.

I was supposed to go to a party tonight but don't feel up to it. Then again, why should I worry about something I have no control over?

BTW, does anyone know if the insurers come to inspect the house anymore? And how do they put a value on my Nan's jewellery, which is mainly sentimental?

Sorry to hear the misfortune Vezz.

Time to review and tighten up your security. Make it difficult for them to break in and the odds are lessened if you increase their chances of getting caught.

e.g. Locks on windows, doors and fitted alarms / exterior security lights etc.

Answer to you question is sometimes insurance companies do send a 'loss adjuster' round, depending on the size and nature of your claim. This is standard practice but you need to be aware ultimately these poeple work on behalf of the company and their prime concern is to reduce the amount of the claim if possible.

Read and understand your terms and conditions carefully before meeting this person and although im not advising you to lie there are ways you can be economical with the truth. Insurance companies are all to quick to take our money and not as forthcoming when its time to pay out. So i have no problem with one squeezing every last penny they can out of them without incriminating themselves.

Good luck whatever.

Man you got to be careful when you go on holiday nowaydays because you never know who is clocking the whole family taking out suitcases into the car/ etc. In the wrong mind opportunity presents itself right there.

Not saying that might be the case but it was a factor when I got burgled. 3 times over the years. You just have to be philioshphical and say its only goods...the real hastle is sorting out your bank details/ identity etc.

Bless.

BT...totally agree, i remember when i used to live in Deptford....I had to be really careful when I recieved deliveries of goods, or what rubbish i chucked out and when, because people took all these for sign posts for what you had in your house...

^^^^^^^I was going to make that same point.

I hope these people get caught cos if there's anything I can't stand it's a damn teef.

Having your home broken into is a traumatic and distressing experience. What should you do? What inquiries will the police make? What can you do to help protect your property? Below, we give you the answers to those questions and explains what will happen if your home is burgled. Download your PDF crime reduction leaflet here (1852 Kb).

What should you do?
If someone is trying to break into your home, phone 999. We will send help as quickly as possible.

If your home has been broken into but the offenders have left, telephone your local station and we will send an officer to see you. (Discovering intruders have been in your home will undoubtedly distress you. You may feel our response to your call is not as fast as you would like but sometimes there are other victims who need our help more urgently. We will get to you as quickly as we can.)

The intruders may have left some clues so try not to touch anything before the police arrive.

Act Quickly
  • Take a note of stolen items (including serial numbers) and any damage to your home.
  • If cheque books or credit cards have been stolen, tell your bank or credit card company immediately.
  • If you are insured, contact your insurance company and ask for a claim form.
  • If official documents such as your passport or driving licence have been stolen, tell the issuing authority as soon as possible. top of page
  • What enquiries will the police make?
The police will do everything possible to find those responsible. The officers taking the details will give you a crime report with details of how to find out about the progress of your case.

If appropriate, arrangements will be made for a scenes of crime officer or a detective to visit you. top of page

How can you protect your home?
Research shows your chances of being burgled again are fairly high. Therefore it is vital that you carry out repairs immediately. But don't just repair the damage - improve security at the same time - especially at the weak point where the burglar entered. Make it harder for someone to break into your home a second time.

Put yourself in the burglars position. How would you get in if you had locked yourself out? The chances are a thief will take the same route!

If your home is empty during the day and is not directly overlooked, it may be particularly attractive to a burglar and you need to take extra precautions.

Most break-ins take please during the afternoon, between 1pm and 4pm. In many cases a burglar can be in and out in just a few minutes.

    Do

    • Lock all your doors and windows when you go out, particularly at the back - a popular entry point for burglars.
    • Fit British Standard five lever locks to doors and use a ‘deadlock' on front and back doors.
    • Keep your shed and garage locked - your tools could be used to break into your home.
    • At night, close the curtains and leave a light on when you go out.
    • Illuminate dark areas around your home - burglars don't like the light.
    • Make sure your contents are fully insured.

    Don't

    • Leave door keys in hiding places - burglars know them all.
    • Leave a window open a few inches for the cat to get in - burglars can get in too.
    • Leave ladders lying around. If you have to keep them outside padlock them to something secure.
    • Leave curtains and blinds drawn in the daytime - they attract thieves.
    • Leave ‘back soon' notes on display Burglars love a written guarantee that your home is empty.
    • Forget to postcode your valuables. top of page
    • The top ten stolen items:
      • Video recorders
      • Money
      • Jewellery
      • Cheque books and credit cards
      • Televisions
      • Cameras
      • Home computers
      • Hi-fi equipment
      • Silverware
      • Antiques
The chance of having valuables such as videos, cameras etc, stolen is reduced by marking them with your postcode which makes them easily traceable.

Every year hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of property is recovered by the police but not returned to its owners, simply because they cannot prove it legally belongs to them.

Make your property easy to identify - use an ultra violet pen or engrave your postcode and house number on all your belongings.

If your property was stolen could you describe it in detail or provide the serial numbers? Keep a detailed record of valuable items including serial numbers, make, model and colour. Take colour photos of jewellery and get it valued. top of page

      Will you qualify for compensation?
Apart from your household insurance there is no automatic source of compensation for people whose homes have been burgled. But if the offender is arrested and charged a court may make a compensation order against them.

How can you help protect yourself against crime?
There are many things you can do to reduce your chance of becoming a victim of crime. Your local crime prevention officer will gladly give you help and advice.

A Home Office crime prevention booklet, ‘Practical Ways to Crack Crime', gives full details of ways to protect your property. For a copy of the booklet or other advice leaflets, contact your local crime prevention officer or write to:

      The Home Office,
      Crack Crime,
      PO Box 999,
      Sunbury,
      Suffolk
      CO10 6FS.

Joining a Neighbourhood Watch scheme is a good way of finding out about crime in your area. Information sheets with details of crimes, arrests, appeals for witnesses, etc, are regularly sent to scheme members so you can keep up-to-date with what is happening in your community. If you want to join a scheme contact your local police station. If you are interested in setting up a new scheme in your area ring your local crime reduction or Neighbourhood Watch officer for details. top of page

How can you get help from Victim Support?
Victim Support is run by trained volunteers who can offer you practical help and advice as well as a caring ‘listening ear'.

The police automatically tell Victim Support about all cases of house burglary, theft from a person, robbery, arson, assaults and racial harassment. If you do not want to be contacted by a member of the scheme, tell the officer dealing with your case.

If you have suffered a sexual assault, you will be asked if you wish your details to be passed to Victim Support. If you agree, someone will contact you to arrange an appointment. If you prefer, you can contact them yourself at a later date.

For details of your nearest Victim Support scheme telephone 0845 3030900.

      See Crime - Stop Crime
Help stop crime in your area. West Midlands Police operate a CRIMESTOPPERS scheme where you could qualify for a cash reward of up to £500 for information leading to the arrest and charge of an offender.

If you have any information on any crime, simply call the freephone hotline on 0800 555111.

You do not have to give your name (even to claim your reward) and any information you give will be treated in confidence.

      Did you know...?
Windows and doors are left open in three out of ten house burglaries.

96 per cent of ALL reported crime involves property.

Saida,

No, there were no distinguishing marks on my ring, apart from the fact that that band had split, hence my reason for leaving it. Can't see the thieves repairing it! I have my mobile, and Hubby's is at his Mum's. Obviously we have our passports, plus our driving licences ( last night I was asked for id when buying a bottle of wine.....big 40 year old woman that I am!!!)

All,

The police have been. They said they couldn't see any signs of forced entry, but my brother couldn't lock the back door after they went so the burglar had forced the lock. I asked my brother to call the police to tell them this.

The police have left forensic kits for us to eliminate our fingerprints. I asked my brother to leave the house as it is to make it easier for us to identify the missing items.

We've only had this insurance since November. Is there a chance they won't pay out as it's a new policy? It's with Morethan, and we have our cars insured with them also.

PH,

I really hope I'm not burgled again. We're putting carpet grippers on the fence, so if the b**tards try to climb it they'll cut their hands to shreds. We have an alarm, and we have to replace the back door lock anyway.

As an aside, I must admit to being impressed with how the police are handling it. Last time I was just given a crime number!

Vezz.

I'm sorry to hear about this. I was recently burgled a couple of months ago whilst at work. Its not a nice feeling to go through. In my case, I think they were disturbed and only took a mobile phone.

Took the police almost 12 hours to show up to assess the damage.

Some useful advice which was given to me a few years ago was to take pictures of all your valuble items in the home, no matter how small it was. even DVD, CD, computer games etc.

Once this was done I would burn all the pictures unto a cd and had kept several copies, which were left with other members of my family and people who you could trust. This way if anything did happen, you could have a detailed discription of what was taken and such.

Another way of keeping up to date with your items was to upload these pictures to a image host website with a password.

This part was very useful when I was dealing with my insurers as well as the police. Using this info, they knew that I wasn't trying to bump up anything.

I hope this info may come in handy to someone.

Kunjufu touched on something which should be taken very seriously, in regards to your identity. I now keep my documents in a safe now and any letters with my name and address which I don't need goes now through the shredder.

I would advise anyone who hasn't got one to buy a shredder as soon as possible.

Oh Vezz... so sorry.  Being burgled is so very stressful and makes you feel so violated.

BT and Jufu are right though, my in laws were robbed the same day they left the country and they suspect that the cab driver might have told his buddies.   Seriously, pack your bags in the car the night before or get your relatives to take you to airport.

As soon as you get the time, check your bank account and credit report.

The important thing is that you, hubby and baby are away from harm.

Bless.

Hi vezz, sorry to hear about your drama.

same thing happened to me many years ago, I was asleep in bed at the time, the little one disturbed them as they were coming up the stairs, they only took my 2 day old stereo i'd saved all year for, but that was minor under the circumstances,  god knows what could have happened!

Good advice above, esp taking pictures of your items in future for insurance claims - They should pay out the claim, i don't see why not, unless they have some no claims for 90 days clause, check your documents when you get back.

When i go on holiday i take my suitcases to my mums weeks before i leave and pack from there, a lot of hassle, but the people round my way are too bad mind.  I have my front room lights on a timer so hopefully not too many of them notice when i'm not about.

Also, i don't keep any bills more than 3 months old and these are kept in a digital safe with all other important documents, the safe is welded to my floor for extra security.

I understand your upset about the ring, can't replace that, but find some comfort in the fact that material things can be replaced, hopefully sooner rather than later as you have the good sense to have home insurance, also you have your life and your health.

God bless

When you purcharsed your Home Ins. you would have opted for a start date. This is the date the policy would be put 'on risk'. Hence the date your insurance begins. They dont normally come with exclusion periods so you will be able to claim regardless that you've only had it a month or two.

You will have to pay an excess on the claim though, normally ranges from £50-to £100.
