Well 2 days ago I was told I'm being made redundant at my company.  Bwoy when I say I'm going through a bag of emotions it's just unbelievable.  It couldn't have happened at a worser time for me, the anniversary of my grandma's death is coming up (she was buried christmas eve), I finally made good plans to clear off my debts once and for all, seriously think about doing my driving lessons.  Now in less than a mth I'm gonna be out of a job and I'm faced with what am I gonna do next? Sitting on my ass collecting dole money is not an option for me, from the age of 16 I've always been working fulltime and I never left a company without lining up a next job first.

I know now is as good a time as any to sort out my career prospects, seriously think about what I wanna do for the rest of my life but I'm not sure how to go about it.  I could take one of two routes: find a job mentoring/counselling that will be willing to train me or find a job using sign language which again would need a training programme.  I've done a google search but it wasn't really giving me info, maybe I was typing the wrong thing in the search engine I dunno.  If anyone knows about these two areas of expertise I would appreciate some help.

Thanks in advance

Don't be disheartened. Maybe this is God working his magic? Maybe you are destined for bigger and better things? Remember everything happens for a reason.

Take some time over Christmas to think about where you want to be, what you want from life, and oh yeah-new year=fresh start? It may be a blessing in disguise-who knows?

facetygal - I got a friend into sign language but she lives in the States, it's quite a big thing out there. I'll ask her if she has any references over here.

I agree with lilthuggy. Try and see this as an opp to move forward with grander things.

You have narrowed down what skills you have thus far, why not look in the Wednesday Guardian jobs - Social care section, and see exactly what qualifications and skills are needed for specific jobs that interest you, and indeed, how much money you can command.

Try and get the person specification which will help you understand the types of knowledge/skills and qualies relevant for that field.

If you are interested in mentoring, sign language and counselling, how about thinking of doing a counselling course or Psychology degree or even Social work? Or, how about getting more experience in the voluntary sector, this will help you further narrow down your interests.

Did you say in another post that you worked in a school? Do you want to be a teacher?  Sounds to me that your future looks bright.

Good luck

Facetygal - so sorry to hear that.   These people have the worst timing.

I know what your going through, the same thing happened to me earlier this year, although i was reprieved.

How much money will you be getting?  Thats the first thing, if you can live on that money for a while and be comfortable then that gives you a few months to receive some training and weigh up your options.

It can be a blessing in disguise, so many of us get caught up in the routine of having a 9 - 5, when you faced with redundancy, it can make you re-evaluate your life and what you want to acheive and give you the push to go out and get it.

When I look back on 2006 I sometimes wish I wasn't given my job back, I have so many things  I want to do but no time to do them.

Good Luck!

@ All

Thanks for ur kind words.  I too believe that everything happens for a reason, I guess it's just the initial shock and the way in which it was done.  The payout is decent still considering I was only there for a yr.  I just don't like the idea of having nothing to fall back on, as I said earlier I always had other jobs lined up before I left a company.

Right, now I've enquired about the sign language route, because I have only started my level 1 it will be hard for me to get any work in that field right now.  Once I've finished level 1 going onto level 2 things will look a bit better, so I'd have to wait about a yr and a half for that.

So I guess maybe the mentoring/counselling route is the way for me to go right now.  I'm gonna think long and hard and do a lot of research so come new yr I should have a clearer idea of what I wanna do.

So sorry to hear about your predicament, especially at this time of year.  However, its best that it happened now while you are at a career crossroads than say when you are in your 40's or 50;s having been with the same company for 20 years.  You are young enough to pursue other directions and it seems as though you are doing that already, with skills that are much needed. Good luck with the future! :)

big hugs to you, (((Facety)))

have you considered working for the NHS?  they always need people to sign and translate and the NHS pays for training... check out their website... right now they are reviewing the disability scheme targets and they need to hire people who can sign for coworkers

secondly, contact organisations that work with people who are hearing impaired, you are training for a very valuable skill right now... maybe even volunteering could help you make some contacts

good luck and keep us posted!

Well I got a surprise the other day.  My boss called me into one office and said she has to do a contingency plan, and has asked me and a few other people to stay longer.  The idea was to leave mid jan but now I'm gonna stay till the end of feb, and get an extra mths wage on top of my redundancy package.  The lord is good, I still haven't found another job and I was worrying what was gonna happen when I left that place.  Now I've got a bit more time to sort things out.

Nah the only way I can stay with that particular company is if they find me another job in another dept.  Yeah I do wanna focus more on my career but if I have to find any job in the meantime, I can't let the money dry up.

Have you tried looking for work at a Citizens Advice bureau or any other legal organisation. Some CAB's sometimes take on people who deal specifically with people whon use sign language to communicate

Thanks babe I'll look into it, but literally I can't do nothing with the sign language until I get to level 2, that will take another yr.  So right now I'll focus on the counselling/mentoring side.

New Initiatives specialises in African-centred Rites of Passage for young people of African descent and their families.

Our programmes are inspired by African tradition and designed to ensure that society is constantly enriched with young people who are proud of their cultural heritage and prepared for the challenges of contemporary society. Young people enrol on our programmes to journey together from childhood to young adulthood

They have a mentoring rites of passage aimed at young black sisters called Akuah. AKUAH is a carefully designed programme of support for young Women (12-16 years) of African descent that provides knowledge, skills and experiences to prepare for adult life. Young Women that complete the initial taster workshops then voluntarily enrol, with the support of their families, onto a much more intensive Rites of Passage Programme. This 2-stage approach provides an opportunity to become familiar with the people and the ideas that make-up the programme before making an informed decision to commit to a programme of cultural enrichment that is guided by an environment conducive for nurturing personal growth and transformation into Womanhood. Recruitment is through families; young people self-refer or agencies make referrals.

I'm a mentor myself babe, have been for the past 3 or so mths.  I'm with a local organisation, dealing with teenage offenders.  I've already had two cases both male and female from different racial backgrounds.  It is hard but a worthwhile thing to do, the good thing also is I can work towards an accreditation, I just need a case to last the full 6mths.
