Hello everyone,
I am a little stuck and i need everyone's help here please
I have to write detailed practical criticism of Ngugi Wa Thiongo's A Grain Of Wheat with particular attention on pages 10 to 14
The deal is this: I have to pay particular attention to language and form, and to the ways in which A grain Of Wheat specifically relates to some issues of colonialism and postcolonialism.
What i need is for people who are familiar with the book as well as issues of colonialism and postcolonialism to give me some ideas of what i can add in the essay.
Also, if you do have any recommended reading which might help, please do list it here(but not long big books please....time is limited and i have 2 other course work to do )
Many thanks in advance

| Lol, sorry sis, there's no conspiracy. I would help you but I've never read the book. But what aspects of colonialism and postcolonialism do you want to know? It might help if you narrowed it down a little. What issues do you want to raise in the paper?

Ah, finally...
One of the big issues i have to use is the GENDER relationships: How were gender relationships affected during colonialism between African men and women.......the way the men were quick to revolt against the matriarchal traditions for the patriachal ways....and if possible, how has this continued in the post colonial era.
I also need to touch on independents struggles....different movements of independents in the continent and contrast them to see the different ways in which each African state approached it.
Finally, if you can find it(i haven't been able to ) the colonial and post coloinial literature genre.....how is it different to other literature eg: the western style literature around that time. What was the themes that most African literatures touched on?
I think thats it.....the rest i have found other sources already....
PS: You all should be ashamed that you haven't read this novel

Did you get this assignment done?
Sorry only just seeing this(rarely venture past the Village/News Politics pages)
I am a big fan of Wa Thiongo but to be honest aside from most of his short stories and Petals of Blood I have not read much of his novels. Heard him speak hundred times and read all of his essays. There is an essay that touches on the role of women in African societies but for the life of me cannot remember the title. I just tried a search but can't find anything online.
To be fair though, A Grain of Wheat is famous for being one of Ngugi's most complicated novels.

Oh no wish I'd seen this earlier, I would have suggested books from Dennis Walder's Collection, (Literature in the modern world and post colonial readings etc) and ask you to read section by Chinuah A (something his name has slipped my mind just as I'm typing) Did you get it done?
