Greetings family!

i just wanted to ask, if anyone knew of any books, journals, or essays on the impact/signifcance of Garveyism on the Anglophone Caribbean? Im wrting an essay on it for uni, and i could really do with some more information.

In addition i would also like to know if there is any books, journals ect on early pan african movements (20th Century) in the Anglophone Caribbean as well.

thanks!

No, and no, by the looks of it. Change the subject you're writing about, it's probably too narrow, and it would be nigh impossible to just focus on the Caribbean, considering that he spent alot of time in America and London where to be trueful he probably had the most influence. If you want something of substance then you'll probably need to go further, though I am "assuming" you're doing something of Degree level worth here by the way.

He probably had a larger affect on Americans in a nutshell..

He once criticised Haile Selassie and rightly so in my opinion which didn't make him too popular in some quaters which is even stranger considering some Rastafarians consider Garvey a religious prophet of some sort. Because in his various speeches he made statement about looking to Africa for there a king will be crown. Rastafarians took that as prophecy. Alot of Early Rastas were involved in Garveyism with his Back to Africa movement, so perhaps looking into that area might help you, since alot of his beliefs influenced them somewhat even though Garvey never indentified with the Rasta movement, though he worked with them. His wife Amy is also worth talking about.

Are a few sites that might help.

Garvey: His Work and Impact, is a book about him, and typing that into Google will find you the sites above amongst countless others also.

Thanks for replying Peacemaker. Im doing a History degree, and one of my options is  the the history of the Caribbean. The question is actually quite flexible, as i have linked, his work in the caribbean, to places like America and Africa. the question is also about the significance of the pan african movement in the Anglophone Caribbean, in which i have looked at a number of issues such as: resistance, anti-colonial attitudes, african consciousness and its influences in the Francophone Caribbean. I have witten about rastafarianism also, and its influences in Garveyism. The book u recomended I have, and thanks for the websites.:)
