A friend and I are travelling to the USA in October for three weeks. First stop is New York but only for 10 hours so we need advice on must do things; best way to get around the City etc also how far is Laguardia airport from say times square? same for JFK?
Next stop is Chicago
We’re attending the Annex expo Saturday/Sunday which is to be held at Donald E. Stephens Convention Centre, never been to Chicago so not sure how easy it is to get around the City. We’ll be staying with friends in the suburbs but we are open to staying at a hotel for the weekend if it’ll make it easier to get to the expo. Please help with info regarding transport in Chi and also hotels we can look at.
Travelling to Indiana on Tuesday, also never been there so need to know if it’s best to fly, rent a car or take the greyhound? We’re staying with friends but appreciate a little more info on things to do and must see places.
Then on to St Louis Friday – Monday. Staying with friends again but need to know best way to get to St Louise from Indiana. I also hear St Louise is dry?
Any other places around the Midwest worth visiting? Bear in mind we’ll need to get back to Chicago to catch our flight back to London so can’t go too far.
Thanks in advance

Erm don't all answer at once now lol.
Thanks for those who have PM'd, surely there must be others who live in the Midwest who can help .
Step up now... we don't have very long left, it'll be nice to have an idea of what to expect before we get there.

You might consider pm'ing chubbichix, I believe she is in New York. JFK and Laguardia are 15 minutes apart or about 12 miles. Taxi cabs are the best way to get around NYC if you are only there for a few hours. I always drove when I was there because I was there on business. Times Square is about 10 miles from SW from Laguardia airport.
Next stop is Chicago

We’ll be staying with friends in the suburbs but we are open to staying at a hotel for the weekend if it’ll make it easier to get to the expo. Please help with info regarding transport in Chi and also hotels we can look at. Did you receive any type of recommendations from the sponsors of the convention in regards to hotels? The train doesn't go everywhere in Chicago. It depends on which city you are going to be staying in. You might want to ask your friends what they think. I find Chicago very easy to drive around. As long as you become familiar with highways 90/94 and the 80/90 toll road and 294 you will be fine if you drive. If you drive take plenty of change because Chicago has alot of toll roads and they get pricey. Dogon is in Chicago he will probably give you some nice places to go. Chicago like NYC is a great place to go if you love food. There are so many places to go and eat whatever type of ethnic food that you have a taste for. Have fun on your trip Chicago is a great town. Lots of museums and things to see. If you are a history buff Chicago is a great place for that too.
Travelling to Indiana on Tuesday, also never been there so need to know if it’s best to fly, rent a car or take the greyhound? Where in Indiana are you going? Gary/Merryville and Portage are basically suburbs of Chicago. They are about a 25 miles or a 30 minute drive south from O'hare airport. If you are going to South Bend Indiana that's about a 90 minute drive southeast from O'hare airport. If you are in fact going to South Bend this is a great time to drive there from Chicago if the trees are starting to change colors. If you plan on going to Indianapolis that's about 175 miles or a 3 hour drive from O'hare. I would fly if you are only going to be there one day. Never, ever, ride Greyhound bus in this country if you are in a hurry. They stop far too many times. It would take all day just to get there.
We’re staying with friends but appreciate a little more info on things to do and must see places.
Then on to St Louis Friday – Monday. Staying with friends again but need to know best way to get to St Louise from Indiana. I also hear St Louise is dry? Fly. If you mean dry as in climate, no way it is very humid. Awfully ugly city. Very boring too. St. Louis if an old industrial city that never made the transition into the information age.
Any other places around the Midwest worth visiting? The twin cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul are nice but that is an 8 hour drive from Chicago. They have the mall of Amercia in Bloomington Minnesota which is about 5 minutes from the Minneapolis airport.
http://www.mallofamerica.com/
Chicago is the crown jewel of the midwest. You can't go wrong by spending as much time there as possible. I would recommend Kansas city but the only thing to do there is eat barbecue. And it's not worth going that far just to eat.
Bear in mind we’ll need to get back to Chicago to catch our flight back to London so can’t go too far. Spend as much time as you can sightseeing in Chicago. You will not regret it. Go downtown to the Navy pier and go to what they call the magnificent mile on Michigan Avenue and Lake Shore Drive. There are plenty of hotels to stay in also.
Next time if you get the chance to come to Texas I'll give you some places to go and experience the place the way the locals do.
http://www.aviewoncities.com/chicago/magnificentmile.htm
Thanks in advance

Cheers ac9311. Chicago looks and sounds great; I can't wait to get there. I'll probably check out the hotels online and book rather than travelling to and from the Suburbs, methinks we might end up staying longer than the 6 days we had in mind. Good idea about recommendations from the organisers, i'll email them and see what they say.
I was looking forward to taking the greyhound but sounds like it might be a pain we could do with out, left hand side drive is going to be a challenge thou, glad i won't be the one doing it .
I suspected St Louis would be dry (boring). I have activated plan B quick time lol; now will only be staying probably one night, two the most.
Spending three days in Indianapolis and might be adding a trip to Dallas (don’t even know how far out it is but its either Dallas or Toronto). I am thinking we’ll have to fly, if not then that mall in Minneapolis looks very promising.
Thanks again for your help.

@ac9311
You're going to regret offering lol how close are you to Dallas?
Looks like we need to do some tweaking (ticket has insurance lol). We're now 95% sure we'll be flying to Dallas on Tuesday - Friday/Saturday morning (staying with a friend who will be taking some time out to show us around). What should we expect? also thinking of making Boston our last stop before heading back to London.
Plan could still change . Still hoping to get out of going to Indiana (sounds dry too).

You're going to regret offering lol how close are you to Dallas? Remember I offered. I have no problem helping you out. I want you two to really enjoy the place it is a nice place to visit. Ask whatever you want I would hope you all would do the same for me if I were travelling to London. I live in Fort Worth about a 45 minute drive to Downtown Dallas.
I am going to make some suggestions for you but let me know what kind of things you like to do and I can give you some specifcs to help you maximize your time efficiently while you are here.
Looks like we need to do some tweaking (ticket has insurance lol). We're now 95% sure we'll be flying to Dallas on Tuesday - Friday/Saturday morning (staying with a friend who will be taking some time out to show us around). What should we expect? You will probably find the people here very friendly. That's what I have always heard from people I have met who have visited here. If you speak with a British accent they will probably talk your head off out of curiosity. African Amercians here are not as outgoing as I would like. We are very suspicious of one another. I hope we are on our best behavior when you are in town.
What are the dates that you two are going to be in Dallas? I will give you some specific things to consider during that time. If it is early October and before the 22nd, you can go to our state fair it actually begins this Friday. While there go to the African American Museum.
http://www.aamdallas.org/
If you let me know what city you will be staying in, or if it's Dallas which side of town, I can recommend some restaurants for you two to go to. That way you don't spend all of your time driving all over the place. Dallas Fort Worth is a vast area. You will see when you are landing especially if it's at night. Unfortunately you will have to drive here. It is too spread out to afford a taxi. We do not have a very good transit system because of the urban sprawl. I am sure that your friend can elaborate on that for you.
I am going to tell you right from the beginning you have to eat Mexican food and bbq at least once.
Sonny Bryan's Smokehouse for barbeque. 214/357-7120
Casa Dominguez for Tex Mex (Mexican) food. 214/871-9787
If you want to try some southern soul food let me know and I will recommend some places for you. Keep in mind that it is heavy food (extremely filling) and not very healthy. I haven't eaten any in years.
if you want to go shopping there are a large number of malls. Northwest of the airport (5 minutes) we have Grapvine Mills which is a large outlet type of mall. There are several upscale malls here too. It really just depends on how much money you want to spend.
http://www.grapevinemills.com/static/node527.jsp
http://www.galleriadallas.com/
The weather is great right now. 70s and 80s during the day and 50s to 60s at night. You have to go downtown Dallas to the book depository which is where Lee Harvey Oswald shot JFK from. It is now a museum. You will also be at Dealey Plaza which is a huge tourist site. There are plenty of nice places to eat not far from where you will be.
http://www.jfk.org/
You have to get over to Fort Worth we have one of the top rated Zoos in the country. Our downtown area is also very nice. Lots to do and plenty of good places to eat.
http://www.sundancesquare.com/
http://www.fortworthzoo.com/
I believe you have mentioned that you are Ethiopian, there are a couple of Ethiopian restaurants in Dallas if you are interested. If so, I can give you their info.
If you like to go out and club let me know and I will find out what the latest clubs are. I am past that age bracket now. I prefer live music such as Jazz.
You may want to consider visiting New Orleans for a day while you are in Dallas. It's only a 45 minute flight. You can get a ticket pretty cheap on Southwest Airlines. That way you can have a look at what took place. It sounds morbid, but there are actually tours.
Or you might consider catching a flight and going to Memphis and seeing the Civil Rights museum. That is where MLK was murdered. Memphis is a short flight also. You have alot of options when you are down here.
also thinking of making Boston our last stop before heading back to London. Boston is a nice place to go. There is a alot of historical sites to see there. You can go see the place where the famed Boston Tea Party took place. You are about an hours drive south from where Plymouth rock is.
Plan could still change . Still hoping to get out of going to Indiana (sounds dry too). The best time to go to Indianapolis is during the Black Expo.

@c9311
Thanks for all your help and others who have provided the information i needed. I am actually quite touched by some people’s generosity .
Right
We decided for the last time (can't change ticket any more lol) to scratch Indiana, to scratch driving and taking the Greyhound. We'll now be spend a week in Chi then fly to Dallas on Thursday 6.10pm, Thursday evening will be our only chance to see Dallas as the friend we're staying with have invited us on a road trip (Friday - Sunday) to San Antonio woohoo. We get back to Dallas just in time to catch an evening flight to St Louis on Sunday.
Really wanted to spend sometime in Dallas but our schedule wouldn’t allow it, but I am very excited about the trip to San Antonio, our friends have promised to take us to all the touristy places and if time allows we might stop for a few hours in Austin.
Thanks Again, i am definitely going to try out at least one the restaurants you mentioned.

the friend we're staying with have invited us on a road trip (Friday - Sunday) to San Antonio woohoo. You will not be disappointed with San Antonio. While you are downtown. Be sure and go to the riverwalk. While on the riverwalk go to the rivercenter mall located on the riverwalk and catch the boat ride that they have. They give you some great history facts about San Antonio and the riverwalk. Also go and eat at Mi Tierra's Mexican restaurant it is downtown in an area called market square. Everyone will know where it is just ask someone. Their phone number is 210/225-1262. They are open 24 hours. They also have a bakery located in the front of the restaurant. The food is very good. And if you have never had a margarita this is a good place to try one. Also north of San Antonio there is a nationally recognized bbq place called Rudy's it is a big red barn on the eastside of I-35 going north 210/653-7839. You will pass right by it and you will not miss it. The man's brisket will melt in your mouth.
if time allows we might stop for a few hours in Austin. If you stop in Austin, have your friend take you to downtown to 6th street. Park and walk. There are live music clubs/bars all along the street. Remember you will be in a college town so expect alot of students down there. You will be about 3 minutes from the University of Texas. You will also drive right past it on your way to San Antonio. Also if you have time, go to Stubbs bbq in Austin it is on the corner of 8th ave. and Red River. The address is 801 Red River 512/480-8341.
Also you will be going through a city called San Marcos. There they have one of the largest outlet malls in the state. You will not miss it. They have stores on both sides of I-35.
As I've said before have fun I think you will find Texas and Texans to be very hospitable. I really want to hear what you think of our country in general.
Sorry for being so long winded. I just wanted to give you some places to go where locals go that aren't too touristy (overpriced).

Unfortunately not. There is just not enough time to stop over this time around, but i will be coming back to visit my friend who has just immigrated to Wooster Ohio in March/April, I plan on making proper time for DC and New York then. I hope you wouldn't mind if i contact you then? @ac9311 i have written down the telephone numbers of all the restaurants you recommended. I'll probably also do a spot of shopping for some new runners as I’ll probably be needing to do a lot of exercise when i return lol. I will also be celebrating my birthday in Chicago so if anyone knows a nice club or any fun place you can recommend will be great. Thanks guys

I am back
I have had the most amazing time in the US. Fell completely in love with Chicago. By the time we left we could take the Metra from the Suburbs to Chicago, take the buses, walk to the field museum, Navy Pier, Magnificent mile etc.
Didn't like Dallas apart from the Gallaria that is. I loved San Antonio sea world, the river walk, the weather was fantastic, the people very friendly as i expected. We spent half the night at a bar next door to the Marriot hotel (River walk, food court) singing Zulu songs and dancing. Good times .
St Louis was nothing special but i had the most fun there, visiting the Arch, the museum, the Mississippi river and (if i may whisper) went to a gun ranch in clan town and got to handle a 9mm, 45 and AK47 (didn't get to shoot the AK47 thou).
Not sure if my friend was pulling my legs but we had to find stones and throw it in to the Mississippi river as claimed it was a ritual we had to perform for the slaves who laid down the concrete?????????
St Louis was sunny and warm but the wind was nothing like i have experienced, at one point i thought i was getting blown away and had to sit down holding on to the concrete wall.
Thanks to everyone who helped me out. Unfortunately we weren't able to go to all the places recommended but i very much appreciate the help.
PS, African American men are one of the nicest, most friendliest people i have ever met. Everywhere we went we were greeted warmly and helped all the way by the men. Even just walking in the park the men would make a point of saying hello and how are you.

| I knew that you would love chicago. I would move ther if it wasn't so damn cold. I am glad that you enjoyed yourself while you were here in the US. I wish you could have gotten over to Fort Worth. It is alot nicer place to visit than Dallas. We are more hospitable. It sounds like you were at the Marriott River Center in San Antonio. That is a very nice hotel.

Thanks guys.
@ac9311 that's the place. Fort Worth sounds great, i saw directions to fort worth while we were driving to San Antonio, seems to be quite near to Dallas. I doubt i'll ever come back to Dallas but on the off chance that i do i'll make sure to drop by to experience the hospitality.
I loved Chicago too and seriously thinking i might want to relocate there some time in the future. Wooh not sure if i can take the cold thou, Last week Monday and Tuesday was so cold (the coldest it'll ever get in London), my hands and feet were literally frozen and had to purchase warmer boots, socks etc to get slightly warmer. My friend who lives in Chi thought we were crazy because to her it was nothing compared to how cold it usually gets .

Fort Worth and Dallas are in the same metropolitan area. We are 30 minutes apart from downtown to downtown. The people in Dallas are very ego driven. Very materialistic. That's why I said in an earlier post that I hoped we would be on our best behavior.
Just out of curiosity, what was it that you didn't like about Dallas?
In regards to Chicago, you ain't seen nothing yet as far as cold. Just be glad that you weren't ther in January. As beautiful as Chicago is in the spring and fall, it's the exact opposite in the dead of winter. It's grey and bitterly cold. If the wind gets going off of lake Michigan look out. You will wish for a quick death.
Anyway I won't talk your head off, sorry for being so long winded. My wife always gets on me about that, especially in public because I will talk peoples head off especially if they are from a different country.

Just out of curiosity, what was it that you didn't like about Dallas?
It was very quite , Of course could well have been that the bible bashing people we were staying with didn't know the hot spots .
One thing about Dallas i loved was that when we went to the Galleria they automatically assumed we were some rich girls lol... that day i walked away with over $100 worth of free stuff with out having spent a penny. It was amazing, when i went to clinique to get my facial stuff (which usually cost $50-$80) the lady gave me a month worth of free supply (because she thought i may have been using the wrong number and didn't want me to waste money purchasing the new one before trying), a perfume, lip gloss and mascara which she happened to think looked good on me and i didn't so she gave it to me free in order to convince me (lol you gotta love America)
You will wish for a quick death.
lol i saw the state of the roads apparently the weather is responsible. You know if the concrete can't take it then i have no chance .
Anyway I won't talk your head off, sorry for being so long winded. My wife always gets on me about that, especially in public because I will talk peoples head off especially if they are from a different country.
I have enjoyed reading and appreciated all your help. You and the dogon have been a big help, in fact you guys suggested that i had to try a pizza in Chi even thou i am not really in to pizzas i still went to Giordanos and ate the most fantastic pizza i have ever tasted in my life, (unfortunately we got refused alcohol because they thought we were under age lol). And the amazing soups inside bread roll.... oh heaven; i was completely obsessed with the chicken and wild rice soup. I am just glad i don't live there because i could easily get fat.
I never understood my friend talking about being hungry when ever he was in London until i spent proper time in the US and saw the amount of food they serve and how easily available food was. I mean why have a McDonalds in Wal-Mart? i never thought people doing their shopping for food would have the time to stop for a bit to eat.
One thing i also noticed was the fact that Americans don't really dress up, they usually in jeans and trainers (runners?) even out to dinner .
Another thing Americans are infatuated with is accents and especially African Americans seem to have this disbelief and complete shock that black people live in Europe. The first time i spoke to an AA (a young boy working at the conference centre) he looked at me with and i was seriously concerned.... checked my skirt, my reflection in the musty door (just in case i had drools and what not running up my face) but he came back with.......... i am sorry but you gave him goose bumps when you spoke.... rotflmao... i personally thought it was hilarious but he thought it was amazing and that his friends should also hear me speak as well..........
Absolutely enjoyed every day, minute, second of my trip... it was just a pleasure from the minute we stepped off the plane until we got back to darned heathrow airport .
Btw @MwemaJ i am coming to New York in 5 weeks time. Everything is booked except for the hotel... so soon as i get that sorted i'll be looking for some help from you if that's ok?
