Hey all

I took on a job 3 months ago to help me out while I'm at uni.  I arranged my shifts around my classes and everything has been going ok.  All the other students that work there go home for the holidays, but for me that is impossible so I work through and take on the extra shifts to help them out.

I asked my boss if I could take some time off for my studies, I am finding my coarse really hard and really need some extra time to study, failing is not an option for me.  This man told me either I work my shifts or quit, he was not willing to discuss the matter with me even though I pointed out that when others had gone home for the easter holidays I worked my arse of for him.

My friend told me today that this same man has given three other students time off for the same reason that I needed it and that I should go over his head and talk to his boss about the situation.

Another person told me that there is nothing I can do about it and I should just leave, but I need the money and getting another job will be hard because most of the part time jobs are already taken by other students

I really don't know what to do, my pride is telling me to walk out, but my pocket is telling me to stay

Any advice?

I wouldn't advise leaving unless you have another job lined up because you don't wanna find yourself unemployed. I know what you mean about pride but trust me, i've been there and its not worth it. However, you are entitled to your time off so if there is someone more senior you can take your case to then i would say that needs to be your first port of call.

This sounds like racism to me Rastawoman and one that we know, is all too hard to deal with, because even if you are prepared to fight - it's time and effort.

Time and effort that you need for your studies.

My advice would be to talk to his superiors, write letters appealing to the various heads of departments if need be, get the others who did get time off for the same reason, to appeal to him and his superiors, (although trust me - don't depend on them doing it), while all the time looking for another job.

The CAB could help, (but again don't count on it per se), or why not try your local (African) community centre? They may be able to advise.

Lol @ PrinceHakeem I might try that

Abatha I feel that you are right, I am the only black person working there and this same man is always making jokes about my accent and trying to mimic things that I say ( although it sounds more like a mix of Jamaican and Welsh!)

I would like to go over his head but thats going to make my life there alot harder and like you say i'm already struggling with trying to manage my time. also I doubt any of the staff that where given time off are going to want to help me out, they got what they wanted they're not going to risk having it taken away.

Lol @ African community centre...I'm in Swansea theres not enough Africans here to have something like that here, I will look into it...but I won't hold my breath...why oh why didn't I go to a London unibighairlol

Racism in the work place is as common in London as it is in Swansea!

Who hired you?  I'm guessing not this same guy.  Speak to the person who hired you (his boss) about the situation, not citing racism in anyway at first, about getting time off.

I would advise you to speak to this guy about his 'jokes', let him know you don't like them - in the most polite way possible - so if he does it again you can report him for being a blatant racist.

I was in the same Dilema couple of year back.. when I had about 2-3 months left of uni.. I needed the money but I also needed the job... but in the end I left the job because they won't allow me to do 1 day a week. One of the best decision I have ever made..

I definetly agree with K on this one... (pimp the system)

If he his not willing to help you out, then use the rules to work for you... I don't know if your GP is cool, mine was safe.. all I need to do is say I ain't feeling.. he will ask how many weeks do I want off.. then bam

Maybe yours can do the same for you... if all else fails then leave the work, its just not worth you sacrifyising your degree with a possible good career to follow, over a measly part time job.

As Kunjufu said use their policies to you advantage.  Make sure that you have a copy of the employee policy handbook (study it) so he doesn't try to feed you a load of bull.  i would definitely have a stern but tactful converation with him about mocking your accent.  I wouldn't even mention to him that I intend to report him.  If he does it again after you talk to him, report him and let him find out from Human Resources.

Thanks everyone for your advice.

K&BP, I think I will take some time of sick, the only thing is I haven't registered to a Doctor (I can't remember the last time I was sick), i'm going to try this afternoon, hopefully I won't have any problems, all I got to do now is work out my story.

I really hope the place gets busy and this man has to do some work himself, all he does at the moment is tell everybody else what to!

BT, I've decided to leave at the end of this school year, i'm going home for the summer (I can't miss Crop Over noway) and i'm sure this idiot will not hold my job open for me.  I will look for something when I get back, plus I can work at my old job when I'm back home and save up a few $$$$.

I spoke to my father last night and he wasn't suprised at all, he told me the white mans law only works for the white man, rules will always be different for me in England, and if I want to come home now I can, lol, its not that serious Dad, i'm not going to give up at the first sign of trouble!

Respect

@Ras

Sorry to hear to have an idiot for a manager... but remember the end goal, to graduate and get out of this place... so if you are entitled to PAID leave then do a sicky... but since you've only been there a month you may not be entitled to paid leave so be careful.

Good idea to go home for the summer and cool your head for a while.... this man is a nothing in the big scheme of things so don't give him any importance in your life, he is just there to pay you money while you are on the road to your end goal. That's all he is.... just think when you have graduated and are swimming with the dolphins :Dhe'll still be there making some other poor soul's life very difficult...

Best of luck with your decision.....

Rastawoman...Stress is usually a nice non discript illness that can't be argued against.....Or there's migraine....or better still 'women's problems....is usually very good excuses...actually now that I think about it, there is always good old back problems...

I was thinking back problems...noway of proving that, womans problems could be a problem because they might want to send me for tests, thanks K for the ideas.

I couldn't get into the doctors surgery that I tryed today, that was a bit of a shock, I'm going to try another one on Monday...if I get in i'm calling in sick on Tuesday!

Miss Nellia, its only a minimum wage waitressing job, if I'd been there 3 years I wouldn't get sick pay, lol.  I'm not really worried about the money I lose, I never asked for paid leave, just some time off to study.  But I definetly can't afford to lose the job completly.

The thing that is making me smile the most is, its one of those places that when the sun comes out people sit outside and it gets really busy, so with me off sick he will have to work his arse off lmbao!

Thank you all, what would I do with out BNV???confused3

Rastawoman,

I agree with Soulstarr. unless you have a job lined up for you at this moment, it wouldn't be wise to quit. If it's causimg you health related problems only then is when you should quit your job , school or whichever one is giving you the most stress. I'm curious about on thing, I'm just curious about one thing? Why is it that you're supervisor not giving you the same options as those other students. Also why is the theme word that seems to come everybodys mouth on yu job is about surrender? Maybe I'm looking too much into things, but it seems that they want you to quit for a reason. While I don't see you in the restaurant business for the rest of your life, I would not quit. With people like that I would stay until they fire me, because with all due respect, I think that there is a possibility what they want you to do.
