Stick with a Hoover. I had one for years, until Hubby decided to drop it!

I've now got a Hotpoint - socks are forever getting caught in it and I'm having to call the engineer out at £95 a time! Needless to say I've now bought their damn warranty....

Buy Hoover or Indesit - another one I had for donkey's years.

What went wrong with it? A two year old model should be relatively easy to fix.

Blackthought:  My advice again beginning with practicalities..

Make sure the door opens 180 degrees...

Make sure you get one with a good spin speed..

I would personally avoid belt driven Washing machines..as they almost always get fault after a while..

I get one that is econoomical with water usage...(may not mean much now..but trust me come water metres it will make sense).

I would definately aviod washer dryers...

I would also avoid any machine with too many gadgets...flashing lights and whistles..why because if it breaks down you will need a flippin scientist to repair it..and it will cost you...

I would also check build quality..especially around the door catch.. Those plasticy gimmicky ones I would avoid like the plague..especially as a man..we don't know our own strenght..

I've had a Hoover..the're ok..

But I've had two Zanussi's now and they have each served me well...

My avice spend just a little bit and buy a good quality machine, it will be worth it in the long run..

I have a personal fear of two-in-one things. My view is, for example, the washer dryer broke down you wouldn't be able to do anything but take your clothes to a bagwash, but if you have them separately and either breaks down (you'll have to be damn unlucky for both to go at the same time!), you can use the other.....

The only reason why I wanted a Wash N Dry was becuase we have one at my mums.. it's a hotpoint and its been in service for years and still doing the job, plus the space in my kitchen only catered for one when I was designing it...

Funny what KF mentioned with the Gadgets, is exactly my old one.. not as flashy, but the damn digital timer doesn't work.. you can hear the beep but nothing is starting at all.... I think I might be interested in the one ladyday is going about...

The engineer told me, it just aint worth getting it repaired, becuase it will cost a lot, and the chances are likely that the same problem may occur again.

@BA My money will be on the timer.

@LadyVee... They are not bad, people say that it can shrink your clothes etc... but its never happened when I used it.. only problem was when I mix my white's with a pink jumper..confused2

I feel your pain.

Our washer died a few weeks ago.  The transmission burned out when I washing towels... this is why my wife should wash clothes.

So we let the clothes pill up, I mean stacks and stacks of clothes.

We finally found something that works fine.

I don't know if you have any stores that carry "scratch and dent" machines.  These are brand model that may have suffered a little damage when moving into someone home, for example.

Usually you can save up to 30% or 40%.

listen to this, there is one coming out in the sum, I don't know if you can wait, but it would not only wash and dry your clothes, but it would do the job of ironing or the clothe will come out straight, so you ironing would be a thing of the past- at least for clothes taken out of the washing machine

But the draw back is that it will cost you a £1000. Now ask me if it is worth it, yes. I think you can afford it, anyway, what ever is worth doing is worth doing well, same applies to buying.

Before you buy check out Pricerunner.co.uk, as I'm sure you'd get it considerably cheaper than that! I bought my dishwasher after doing my research, and saved £60!
