I'm considering applying for a 1yr PGCE course and wanted any advice you can give.
- What can I do to enhance my personal statement?
- What types of questions should I expect in an interview?
- What benefits am I entitled to? (esp considering I wont be able to work for that year).
Thank you

1) if you havn't already got it, you need to get some experince with kids be it in a work or voluntary context. If possible, highlight where you may have worked with "problem" children or implememnted something
2) what you get asked depends on the uni. you should probably expect a group interview whereby you and two other perspective students are interviewed at the same time. They will aske questions about how you would handle certain situations, how you may involve the childs parents in education. what you would use from the local community for trips or visitors etc.
3) you will get a £6000 bursary which is yours to keep!! you may also wantr to take out a student loan. This is not repayable until the april of the year AFTER you graduate and only if you are earning 10 grand or more.
I graduated from Brunel in July this year after doing a primary PGCE. didn't get a job though(!) so i can;t help with questions about that, but any questions about PGCE, i can try and help ya!! good luck!!

Identify your skills. Particularly the ones which are transferrable to teaching e.g. presentations, team work, decision making, leadership etc. Have you already completed other teaching qualifications?
Not too sure about the questions to expect but it just so happens that I have a PGCE document from a while back that may have some tips. I'll get back to you on that.
What are the possibilities of you getting a work placement while you study? Even if only part time. I know for the C&G7307 this is part of the criteria for completion.

thanks so much for all your advice , especially your suggestion that I identify my transferrable skills.
I havent completed any teaching qualifications but I have had a few weeks experience in an East London school which deals with children with special needs.
I would like to get a work placement but ive heard it can be very difficult.

the best thing to do is get and complete a work placement BEFORE the course. During the course you will have placements that are part of the course which your university will find for you. While doing the course you will not have time for extra placements or a part time job. That is why you receive the bursary - it is recognised that while you do the course you will not be able to earn a salary.
Transferable skills are valuable but they are really looking at them in relation to your work with children. It is a prerequisite of PGCE courses to have had some experience with children in some context.

"What about doing the GTP - Graduate Teacher Programme, you study while you work, your placements will be set up for you, you study once a week at whatever University the school is associated with and you are assigned a mentor from the school and mentor from the University. The school is paid for training you and you get paid more than the PGCE £6000 and £4000 golden hello put together.
You can also complete the programme and gain NQT status within the 1 year, I completed in two terms.
But the biggest benefit is the hands on experience that you will get while studying, I was accepted at Burnel to do the PGCE but decided for financial reasons to go the GTP route instead. Best move I could have made.

Hi.
I've just recently been accepted onto the PGCE Media Studies at Central School of speech and Drama. Basically, I e-mailed a few secondary schools for some experience, just sitting in classes etc. to see if teaching was something I wanted to do and also see how classes are taught, you know the general things. Deptford Green are really good for teacher training, so you should try there.
In your personal statement, mention why you want to teach; why you chose the subject you wish to teach; what experience you may have; and why you think you'll be a good teacher.
If you plan to teach Primary School, it's past the deadline. However, there is no deadline for secondary school, but it's best to apply asap, because places fill up fast.
Check http://www.gttr.ac.uk to see if the courses are available still, also check out http://www.tda.gov.uk and it has all the info on it about benefits etc.
If you want any more info on personal statement, don't hestiate to ask me. I can send you a copy of mine if you want, so you can get an idea of what to write.
You could also visit http://www.tes.co.uk there is a staffroom/forum where you can discuss anything with teachers, student teachers, prospective student teachers etc.

@CA95616: The document I have is a participants hand book for once you're on the course so doesn't seem relevant to what you need at the moment....but in addition to the advice given you may also like to try these links http://www.english.heacademy.ac.uk/duologue/docs/pgceintvws.doc
http://www.le.ac.uk/careers/faqspgce.html
If you can get some experience form now or by March the latest you could get enough to see you nicely into the start of your course. At least 6 months worth! That is of course if you intend to start the course in September. You may get through checking out any local projects working with those you would like to teach. I'm not sure if there is a minimum requirement for the experience though. Anyone else know?

it depends on your university, your placement and your stress tolerance levels!! For me, the first placement was stressful. I hated the school, the classteach/mentor and i had to be up at 5.30 am and didn't get home toll 7pm and i still had work to do after that!! my next placemet went much better, which was just as well as this is the one my final placement was based on.
it is alot of hard work between course requirements plus lesson planning/assessment/teaching/meetings. Adequate sleep is a must as is time and space to do your work whether it be in schook or at home. I can only imagine how difficult the course would be if juggled with a family, so if you have a family make sure you have a supportive and understanding network. And stress that it is only for nine months!!
personally, it is the most difficult thing i have ever done. it is truly a vocation.

Madam Butterfly and Teacher et al...You lot get my respect, I thought my vocation was tough..but after hearing what you lot have to put up with..I'll never complain again...
I've just finished my second Professional studies in three years, and this required a very similar discipline and vocation to yours...On top of this I was also here Moderating BNV, doing the Weekly radio show and a family man to boot...how I managed that god only knows....

@Kunjufu: Somehow we just do because we know it's a short sacrifice but a long investment. Congratulations on finishing your second studies. I did my first last year while I was pregnant and that was tough. Knowing the end was coming kept me pushing on though. Many a night was spent writing assigments, preparing presentations andthose professional development logs. Did you have to do these at all? I'm knackered just thinking about what it was like. Will you be going to your graduation ceremony?
@Madam Butterfly: Are you doing any teaching at all now? Or has the experience put you off a little?
@MissBrighterDays: Good luck!

| @ Miss Nelia- I was going to go the PGCE route into teaching but have recently decided to go the GTP route. Can you give me anymore information on it? The whole application process is a bit hazy to me right now.
