I have to get myself in gear (no pun intended) and buy a car? What are the best tips for picking out your first car?
Is there any price that is too much? What would you class as a reasonable price?
What are the hazzards of buying a new car over a second hand car? and vice versa...
What are the problems with getting a car on finance instead of paying up outright?
What are the problems of buying an automatic car?
Any horror stories?

*Bump*
After failing a manual test I am looking to take automatic lessons and I want to buy an automatic car. I want to spend about £1700 or less if possible. Help me please!! I've had a look on Autotrader but I know I could probably find better deals then the ads that they have

I know this is probably stating the obvious but dont buy from anyone you know, i.e family or friends. Take someone with you who knows what they are looking at. If you are buying during winter never view a car at night time, you cant see the body work and people try all sorts to cover up defects, there are some very bad people out there who will try to sell you rubish. If you can, save rather than have finance, simply because cars depreciate in value so quickly. Good luck all, wishing you many happy and safe driving times.

How much driving are you planning to do? The more mileage you want to do, the newer the car you should buy...If I had to recommend a brand, I'd go for a Honda for a first car - easy to drive and look after, and durable engines
Your age will be a factor - will affect insurance, esp if under 25 (in the UK) and if also buying a larger engined car...though if its your first car I'd recommend a 1.4 or 1.6 litre engine - less than that tends to be underpowered, more than that maybe not necessary depending on your driving patterns
Is there any price that is too much? What would you class as a reasonable price?
Depends upon your budget, your proposed mileage, what kind of car you want...for a first (not too flashy) car, £2000 will get you something perfectly adequate...Budget for tax, insurance and maintenance too.
What are the hazzards of buying a new car over a second hand car? and vice versa...
If you're planning to keep it for a long while (5 years plus) think about a new car....but the big problem with buying new is depreciation - the minute you drive it away it loses value...and most cars will lose between 50 - 66% of their value over three years...better bet if you can afford is to buy nearly new (say up to a year old) - will save on initial purchase price, and the depreciation 'hit' is eased a little when/if you sell on...
What are the problems with getting a car on finance instead of paying up outright?
On finance, obvious issue is keeping up payments over two/three years....alongside interest, which means, esp on a second hand car, paying out more cash.....my preference would be to buy cash upfront, but obvious issue is laying your hands on it...
What are the problems of buying an automatic car?
If your licence only allows you to drive automatics, you'll have to retake your test to upgrade it to allow you to drive a manual....other than that its driving preference. Manual cars are more fun to drive, if that's important, whilst autos are easy but less involving....on some cars, auto gearboxes can be a pain to fix...
Any horror stories?
It's a fact of life that all cars go wrong eventually, even the prestige brands...can happen to some quicker than others, even brand new....buying newer can minimise the risk, but basic maintenance - oil changes, regular and on-time servicing, keeping tyres at proper pressure - all help...If you can, avoid main dealers for maintenance - it may be more convenient to use them, but it's expensive - there are plenty of independent garages that will do a decent job at a fair price.
Good driving habits also help to avoid the horrors, though you can never fully account for other road users...
