For a few years now I have had the travel bug and have been to the US and booked a couple of cheap last minute package deals to European destinations. Lately, I have had an urge to travel for a longer length of time and to a variety of destinations...yes backpacking.

I know this isnt a commom urge for people in our community (or is it?) - why not??

I'll prob have to go alone because none of my friends are interested and show absolutley no interest in this type of non-luxury travel (and if you saw/met me I'm not ness the 'type'). Yes, I've wondered about the clothes, the hair, the safety - but to be honest I'm tired of waiting for friends and trying to fall in sync with other peoples life / plans.

My question is: Are there any black people out there that have been 'backpacking'? Did you face any probs because of your race? (I know racism is universal but any specific incidents) Any females that have been alone? Where did you go? Are there any companies that stop off in Africa? Would you recommend the experience?

Would appreciate any advice - especially names of companies that cater for independent travellers that would like to meet other travellers.
