Ok everyone, due to the embarrassment of not knowing what Gollywog was in the Big Brother thread, i want to invite anyone with any knowledge of racial insults towards African/ black people to come and educate us young or ignorant ones here.....
The ignorance shown on the Big Brother thread made me think, and i realised that we need to KNOW and be aware of this insults or caracutures.....
WARNING: This is an educational/awareness thread ONLY......not for the lost racists who just happens to stumble across BN or for some coconuts to come and argue that certain insults are not really that bad blah blah.....
Anyways, Mods please keep an eye...

Im not sure what you want with this....
A list of all possible nasty words that can be used to offend africans and their meanings??
I know you said for educational purposes but Im struggling to see the constructiveness of a list of words that offend us... It would seem like a gallery of racism on BN.
Im uncomfortable with this.
Ill let it stand in the interests of curiousity to see where this is going but hmmmmm I can lock this very FAST.
Also I can't garauntee another mod won't close it either.

If anyone else is unhappy about this let me know and Ill close it.

You didnt know what a golliwog was?!! Suppose they dont have them anymore still.
Man your gonna open up Pandora's box with this one. This will attract the resident flies to sh*t. Do people really have to be educated in racial slur. Prior to your knowledge if a white man called you a f**king golliwog Im sure you would get that it wasnt the most flattering of terms.

Kunjufu reposted the link on the BB thread page 11 I think.
I would not bother googling the word because you will get a list of links to white people who want their golliwogs back and don't think it's racist. They wish we could all be happy wogs again, don't see why we are offended and cant admit to how nasty a slur a golliwog is. I would stay well away from those sites, they just moan about "political correctness"..... They probably wish for the free use of the N word too..

It wasn't just dimoke. On the big brother thread there is a black man who calls himself a golliwog. Many of our younger members were unaware of the word and it's connotations. Last night I though it was just dimoke so I told her in PM what it was and showed her a link. Today I realise that MANY young people did not know what it is...
There is justification for curiosity I suppose...

Given what I said about the google links... that when you search up these words on the net you will find links to white sites telling you what the words mean. They tend to PLAY DOWN the significance, and reduce it to little more than a curiousity.... an oddity instead of the insult it is.
Maybe we should take control of how we tell each other these things

As i said, MANY of us in the BB thread did not even know what a Golly was...and people were raving about it....i think Kunjufu did post a thing about the history of how Gollywog was supposed to be about....was it dodgy then?

Dont get angry Moke, its just that there is the potential for this thread to attract all kinds of cretins and losers. To be honest I dont think there are going to be any other racial slurs that you are not familiar with,so I dont think you are out of the loop. Golliwog I suppose is time specific and pretty esoteric for people 25 and under and maybe not born here,so dont feel bad for not knowing.
We cant know everything......although this is my lifes mission,LOL

For clarity's sake...golliwog is likened , I think to those , "cake walk' performers or tar baby statuettes, sth derogatory to blacks...a stupid name made up by an ignorant race...hence it sounding so stupid. Just like the n word to convey and make felt inferiority or be condescending. It was a name created out of ignorance, stupidity and fear... perhaps this thread should be merged with the "How blacks are seen in the media" thread. Just a suggestion.

Ive heard about this on Big Brother but dont watch much TV and black people here getting more crazier by the day. So anything goes I suppose.
Yes education is good.. but I still think it will bring people from the front of the storm.
But I could be wrong..still golliwog is from a blatant era of blatant messages. Enid Blyton and her Noddy books were another. Tarzan was another. Still there are many modern day golliwogs rolling their eyes and playing the circus clowns on the TV/ and in Hollywood and in childrens cartoons right now.

This thread does dredge up an interesting point though.
Drunk Monkey calls himself this, I dont know what the genesis of this user name is but certainly "Monkey" is a slur which has been used against us from time ,until now.
It could be argued that DM has reclaimed this noun to take the sting out of it in the same way that people who use the "N" word say that they are????
His use of this name may have absolutely nothing at all to do with what ive suggested but there maybe people on this forum who may be offended by his user name because of past experiences.

To be frank with you I cannot think off any other words that are in common speech or sight that black people young and old would not be aware of. I have no problem with us dealing with the rogue cases as they arise but I sure cannot think of any other words that you or others will be unfamliar with that are racial slurs. If not for this fool on BB then this conversation would not take place because apart from coconut minded wannabees who wnat some TV exposure the word would stay long buried in the pit of English language and in the minds of the under 20s definately.
So I understand your concerns but I dont see what good is really going to come out of the exercise.
