since reading almost all of chancellor williams book and listening to the ignirance of europeans i feel the need to learn more. i want to do a research project that would lead me to becoming an historian of great substance and use to my people. there are three main places i want to look into but will tackle each individually. my main areas of interest are ancient african history as in pre 700AD. Caribbean history and history of black people in the uk
so please advise me what i ought to do to prepare myself for becoming a historian. reading is no object as i love to read
i have this book from my uni days Doing Your Research Project: A Guide for First-time Researchers in Education and Social Science by judith bell
alll good advise welcome
Fredblack where are you

| As an historian myself, the best way is to take a B.A. degree in History, MA and PHD in History, specializing in a specific area of history and teaching, working in historical museums, doing research on historic documents, volunteering at the Local historical society, reading everything you can and teaching at a college or university setting

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light not our darkness that most frightens us....Nelson Mandela as recited in the film..Coach Carter
Nice sig. I thought you might be interested in knowing where this quote it really came from. It is widely misattributed on the Web and elsewhere to Nelson Mandela's 1994 inaugural address. A quick search through that very speech on the ANC's official web site confirms that the quotation isn't there (URL below).
As it turns out, the author of the quotation is Marianne Williamson, from her 1992 book, "Return to Love" (p. 165).
Just to be extra sure, I wrote to the ANC (info@anc.org.za) asking about
this very quote, and their representative Duncan Harford confirmed my
suspicions:

Hello John
We are aware that these words have for some years now been attributed
to Nelson Mandela on the internet. We do not know how this happened
These words appear neither in the May 9, 1994 inaugural speech
(http://www.anc.org.za/ancdocs/history/mandela/1994/inaugct.html),
nor the May 10, 1994 inaugural speech
http://www.anc.org.za/ancdocs/history/mandela/1994/inaugpta.html),
nor any of the other speeches, statements and writings by Mr. Mandela
(http://www.anc.org.za/ancdocs/history/mandela/).
Regards
Duncan

John
P.S. I know that this quote is used in Coach Carter, but was it actually attributed to Mandela there (or anyone)?

Well, i wish you all the luck in your quest. I love learning about history as well and work with my local and home state historical societies to learn about the area which i live and people whom live there.
I specialize in American southern history, history of the creole "Gullah" people of whom I am apart, the Mende people of west africa and history of Barbados and Sierra Leone West Africa. I dont do European history either, except for the odd research of Ireland, and Scotland.
Good luck ya hear??!!

Hi LadyDay,
I'd say: keep doing what your doing re: reading and studying! There will be no such thing as knowing too much about your study areas--so continue to read everything you get your hands on.
This will involve marketing (yourself!) to a certain degree as well. Do everything to get your name out there so that when people hear 'Ancient Africa,' they think LadyDay. When they hear 'Caribbean History,' they think LadyDay. When they hear 'History of Black People in the UK,' they think LadyDay. You get the idea...
This marketing/ getting your name out there could involve writing/submitting articles to local papers or newspapers/newsletters; spreading the word about your interests amongst your friends and associates circles so that when others hear of opportunities for guest speakers, forum facilitators, etc, they may submit your name for consideration; volunteer/intern at a relevant organization for knowledge and/or networking purposes; volunteer to speak before primary and secondary school students if there are special occasions in which to speak; become a member of a historical society or other history organization; etc; attend conferences on your topics; submit your work when there are 'calls for papers' and opportunities to present. Get some business cards made up and get yourself out there once you feel you are ready.
Depending on your ultimate goals as a historian, you might find yourself back in school as what school might give you is the best positioning as far as access to the so-called top historians and research institutions and credibility in terms of being published in the so-called top publications in the field.
Much success, LadyDay. It sounds like you have a real passion for the field.
Peace

@LadyDay then you need to learn about histiography and its methodolgoies. Get in touch with local socities as is it Tuckers said. In fact I have a lot of work for you when your ready because too busy to taken on.
Just remembered. You need tol lean about indexing, cross referencing and some of the basic nitty gritty of how to get and follow up info. You can either attend classes via MPHil/PHD methodology classess or to be honest do it yourself. Many of the great historians were not classically trained as such and often came from other disciplines. For example Peter Fryer who I know well is a journalist but he knows how to chase down his sh*t and his historical work is good and hence he best selling book.
I tell you two good books which I recommend to Caribbean students who are interested in our history no three From Columbus to Castror and Capitialism and Slavery. I am more concerned here about teaching you the power and skills of referencing and how to follow them up which really the bread and butter of historical work. 'Williams referencing is bueatfiul and you don't even have to read the book just his notes.
Oh by the way I had to use this book in our history methodology course." What is History"by E H Carr. Very simple and smooth but powerful published by Penquin. Also another book which I am raving about in terms of its use as a powerful resource and training tool. The Secret Relationships of Black and Jews. The historical reseach is absolutely first class in terms of the footnotes and referencing is unbelievable.
A lot of the stuff cross references with my Phd studies I spent god knows in the archieves of the Board of Deputies looking at Jewish references and sources going back to 13th centurty eg finding out the number of synagogues in the Caribbean where they were locaed the size of the Jewish community in the region. So I know the work where Caribbean slavery is involved is kosher
Give me a couple of weeks so I can meet a couple of deadlines and I wills send you my Jewish chapter of my PHd or the early history part. I can talk you through the historical method stuff and what you need to know.
Back to work.

All good advice so far.
Don't dismiss the local Historical Society straight off.
Most of them may be focussing on European history, but many of the research skills they are using will be of great benefit to you, how to get hold of primary resources in particular. For me this is the essence of a great Historian, being able to get primary source material, knowing where it came from, how it was generated, and how to weave it into your own narrative.
Good luck

@LadyDay. Let me know about how you go with the Secret Relationship...because I had problems as the Jews or the conservative and so called liberals have used their influence to choke the book off so we can't get it because it makes it clear that Jews actually startd the slave trade and per capita had more African slaves than anyone else and what is so sweet allthe book is based on Jewish references and authorities. So its bascially what Jewish scholar were saying about Jews.
I had to kick up merry hell to get a copy and one of my NOI contacts brought me a dozen from the US but they have run out. So if you cannot get a copy get back to me so I can go on bad, because quite frankly this is joke business. People are hungry for the book and can't get it. The Nation needs to get its finger out big time.

Lady Day, you mentioned the Judith Bell Book which I used too; I have just read Andrea Levy's book 'Small Island' and I was struck by just how accurate the 'voices' of her 4 wildly different narrators seemed. I though this woman must have read/ heard tapes/seen films of a lot of life history's to achieve this.
I've been wracking my brains to remember this other book that helped me to learn how to take a good life history, and it has just popped into my head.
Ethnography: Principles in (or and) Practice. Authors Hammersly and Atkinson, sorry I can't remember their first names but you should be able to Google them/the book.
It's a social science researchers book really, but I think it could be invaluable for you.
