| Hi out there, i'm a guy who has usually preferred to grow his hair long/high/wavy/curly (whichever best describes it). Previously I used to go for a S-Curl look without the S-Curl. Now i'm sick of putting gel in my hair and am looking for alternative hairstyles,..... a couple that have grabbed my attention are Lenny Kravitz afro look, Maxwell, something smart stylish but not too clean cut. Problem is I don't seem to be able to achieve these looks on my own. I've looked comprehensively through the web for 'Black Male afro' hairstyle advice, techniques, hairstyle examples, products to help achieve or maintain that 'certain' look one wants but no joy. Can anyone point me in the right direction,.... whether it be 'web sites, books, products or good black male hairstylists in London'. I know many of u may say just go to the hairdresser but in all honesty I have not had great experiences at them and always cut my own hair (I find it more convenient & am more confident in getting the look that I want not what they want for me). This however does not mean that i'm not willing to begin going again if it's the only or best way I can achieve the real look I want. Any consructive advice or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

The 'Lenny Kravitz afro' might not be easy to achieve with loosely curled or wavy hair.
My hair is wavy with some curly areas and (when it was short) I tried a free-style afro but it didn't turn out very well. You might try washing your hair and then letting it dry with no combing and (if gel makes it too soft or straight) no gel . When it's dry, stretch out random sections with your fingers, then lightly spray on a holding product to keep hair in place. Hope this helps.

I was/am a Master Barber Stylist by trade, what is your natural hair texture? Is it coarse, wavy, soft, fine?
There are a few things you can try:
If you have A white texture hair you can permanent wave(Amonium Thioglycloade) it to get that kinky afro look
If it is coarse you can add a relaxer kit your hair, keep it in 1/4 the suggested time but be sure to work it from the roots out to the hair ends and it should act like a texturizer, giving you the Maxwell look. I use to have my hair Braided and after having the braids in for a day or two I would take them out and have that curlyesque afro.
If you have a medium soft texture you can always just braid it up and take it out after a few days.
What ever the texture you can always get an Afro Pick and Pick & Blowdry your hair out to get that bouncy look then add a little gel and water.
The difficult thing about Maxwell and Lenny is that they are Mixed, Lenny is mulatto and Maxwell is Puerto Rican so it has a lot to do with their Genes.
Or you can just cut it all down and get a Fade, it is less hassles and easy to maintain.Last edited on Saturday May 7th, 2005 03:56 by Masai05

No problem but you'd be surprised how many of my former Caribbean clientel was half Indian, Mulatto, Chinese Jamaican or ect. There is a lot of White blood circulating throughout the caribbean.
Peace

Sorry bout that my whole post didn't appear when i sent it here we go again.
Thx for those extra suggestions. to answer your question's regarding my hair texture. Being from the UK of Caribbean background I am not mixed race or "Bi-Racial" as I think you from the USA say. I have a slight european mixture in both sides of my family so my hair is neither 'Coarse, European straight or fine' I would say that I have full thick hair once grown which although naturally curly has waves when wet, feels wavy when I run my hands through it from the front of the hair line, or is very wavy if I decide to put some gel in it. I would say my hair is probably quite similar to Lenny's and not the same as Maxwell's. But ultimately it is that 'Kinky afro hairstyle' whilst being reasonably manageable like Lenny's that I want. Anymore suggestions again from anyone would be appreciated. thx. Oh and to 'Masai05' trust me i'm not suprised about the mixtures in the Caribbean, from the Indigenous Indian's, to the Spanish coming over, the British empire and the Indentured chinese labourers anyway thx for your suggestions

I am also trying to achieve that kinky afro hairstyle, I have a coarse texture to my hair. i'm a little apprehensive about putting relaxer in my hair so i'm just wondering if anyone else has another suggestion. I was thinkin about having some of those kinky afro extentions put in, but i'd feel weird being a guy and having extentions so i'd like to get some thoughts on that as well.
Thanks
Dam727

@Dam727
How long is your hair?
Have you tried 2 strand twists on lightly spritzed hair?
I have shoulder length natural hair and I plait my hair everynight, in the morning I take out the plaits and just run my fingers thru. it .
Use a little Virgin Castor Oil on lightly spritzed hair and plait or two strand twist the night before is my advice.
Extensions just pull on your hair from thr dermal papilla (hair root) and/or break it from hair shaft - depending on the length and hair weight that you add onto your own hair. Also, it depends on how strong your hair is and whether it can handle the extra weight?

my hair isn't that long right now...it's about 7-8 inches. anyways thanks alot for your suggestions i really appreciate it. the extentions i've pretty much ruled out cause i'm not sure my hair would be strong enough to take the weight. plaiting my hair everynight would just become too much, especially with me going to school and having quite a bit of homework every night. so i'm leaning towards the relaxer method right now, any more suggestions let me know. and i'll let you all know when i try one of the methods and how it turns out
Thanx
