I'm really wrestling with the notion of relaxing my hair at the moment. I currently have natural hair and spend a lot of time and money putting it in braids frequently cos I just don't have the time to maintain it and as much as I love my natural hair, I can't cope anymore!

I'm well aware of the potential consequences or relaxed hair and i'm well aware of maintainence it requires but I'm still 50/50 on whether to go down this route again. Any advice?

Get it pressed or use a ceramic straightener.  It doesn't last as long but at least there are no chemicals involved.

Relax your hair at your own peril!

When you will end up with horrible....horrible hair before middle age then you'll know that money is nothing compared to having unhealthy hair full of persistent dandruff and itching!

If you can't afford to do the braids, then just leave your hair be.....twist it the nite before bed and let it out Tomika Frasier style....depending on your length of course!

I really don't understand why you think relaxing it is cheaper.....its NOT!

You will end up spending more money and time in the morning combing through lifeless hair thats forever breaking......of course this is not the case with everyone.....but its something that you should consider very carefully!

And finally, can i ask why you keep your hair in braids all the time?? I mean it is YOUR hair after all....so why not stop covering it in braids and wear it with pride.......:)

Make no mistake Dimoke! After reading the Relaxer Horror story post my mind has firmly been changed! I've had my natural hair for almost 5 years now and I love it so much that I never really wanted to damage it again with chemicals. its just that its just that i find it so high maintain, hence the reason I keep it in braids most of the time. when its summer, i weaqr my afro with pride! Theres no way I could ever be ashamed of what naturally grows out of my scalp lol. but with the preassures of University and work, I don't always have time. My hair is a very soft but also extremely thick which makes it hard to handle at times.

But nope, going back to relaxed hair isn't for me at all. My mind is made up niceone.gif

This is an option I've opted for on a few occasions but cos i have very thick (and stubborn!) hair, it just doesn't last more than a couple days when I get it pressed so I'm forced to use a ceramic straightener everyday and I'm sure the constant heat isn't good for my hair either confused3

you shouldnt use the straightener everyday as then you'll suffer heat damage.

you should wrap your hair at night so the next day you dont have to use the straightener again until the hair starts reverting, when hair revert stry out another style an updo or something.

why dont you texturise your hair. its like a semi relaxer. that way you can either have it afro with softer curls, or straighten it.

no texturisers are relaxers and use the same chemicals. you would suffer from the same ills as a full strength relaxer

Unfortunately I've been the texturiser route before and to be honest my hair didn't take to it very well. To be honest i'm very sceptical about most chemicals and even some hair products which is why i've changed my mind about relaxing it.

I'm thinking i just need to research more versatility where my natural hair is concerned.

Soulstar....niceone.gif Good on yaa girl........

Just research other ways, you can find loads of it in magazines, in the lady's forum.....ladyday has quite few good threads on style tips et all....;)

And i think Mafdet has quite an lovely collection of very chick head scarfs.....i use them as well a lot when i am at Uni......try to worry only about it concerning work, but when it comes to Uni don't give it too much worry, just wrap it in a lovely scarf and take care of the face with a smashing lip gloss like kiss Dior.......it does wonders for me....;)

For me Uni is a place for study, don't give much a toss about looking like if i am heading to work or out.......just look presentable.......:)

My thoughts exactly Dimoke! I'm known for flingin my hair back in a scarf when it comes to university. I have to get up early enough without worrying about styling my hair! I'm not there to impress anyone. Funnily enough, my partner thinks I look most attractive when I have my 'fro out and tired back with a scarf. He was against the relaxer thing from the start so i guess i shoulda listened to him then :)
