I am a UK citizen looking to relocate to the US (or the Caribbean). I have heard that the U.S. has a shortage of community college instructors (thanks for this information, impactplayer). I would be grateful for any further information about community colleges.  Eg. I have a PhD in Social Sciences, with a little teaching experience. Does anyone know how much teaching experience is required in community colleges if you have a PhD?   Do you think I would be required to travel to the US for a job interview? Any advice on any of these points would be much appreciated.

 :)

Maria,

The requirements depends on the community college.  Some require a Master's degree to teach lower levels while others require Ph.D.  You'll have to look at the requirement from the job in which you are apply.   However, with a Ph.D, why are you looking at community college being that you can also apply for jobs  major universities.   Most major university profs have Ph.D's so that's a benefit even with little teaching experience remember you have to start somewhere.

Also, you can request interview by telephone if you explain that you are in England.  If they request and interview in the States, you should ask if they provide for airfare and accomodations.  Is there a particular State that you'd like to teach in?  Also, what is the package included in teaching with them--do they provide working visa, house stipend w/ salary ect.

Dame,

You gonna have to travel to the USA in order to get work. I suggest you get on a plane and go somewhere with a lot of colleges and universities, a place that isn't expensive cause community college pay isn't the greatest. You just gotta come and apply and be here to meet with Department chairs. America is an easy place to break into but you gotta meet people face to face.

Good Luck!

NOVA (Northern Virginia Community College) outside of Washington DC is one of the largest community college systems in America. You should try there.

What do you mean? It is what its gonna take, Americans will hire someone from abroad but unless you wrote something groundbreaking they won't send you papers. You gotta take a flight to a city, get a hotel room, fill out applications online and meet the Dept heads face to face. You already got a PHD the rest is just foot work. If you don't do it that way you gonna be on BN three years from now doing the same thing.
