Hi there Moderators
I orginally placed this Thread/Ad on the Open Form as I did not want to limit it to Professional, Business and Networking. Also, it appears that there were more viewing when it was placed in the Open Forum, than this Forum. Is there any chance of it being transferred or copied back to the Open Forum?
Peace and Love

Hi Cake...actually it fits more of the Community announcement forum or the one in which it is now. I can move it to the Community announcement forum or leave it here in the Professional, Business, Networking forum, either way let me or one of the other moderators know.

Hey did anyone go along to this event? What did you think?
I though it was very inspirational, and the guest speaker where informative, honest and quite positive (as well as all having a sense of humour, which added extra atmosphere to the event!).
I also thought they were very hospitable; Drinks reception, lunch, glass of champagne and a piece of cake to celebrate their one year anniversary!! Well done aspire, keep up the good work. Nice to see so many successful positive black people (particularly women!!).
All in all the event was a success, not bad for £3.00 hey!!

Yeah I went along with my sister and found the event very informative, I appreciate the work carried out by the Aspire team and respect their rapid growth. On a personal I felt it was positive to see the black community coming together to support each other. People were networking, sharing stories and experiences, it was a worthwhile and productive day.

Hi Amin
Who out of the speaker did you find the most interesting. They all had a lot to contribute, but I found Esther (the woman who spoke last) was inspiring. I guess it was the way she got into industry and the strategy she used to establish and sustain her position. May be it was her unconventional method and her directness which appealed to me most.

| @Cake Esther was the best speaker, though all the speakers raised valuable points which were worthy of note taking. I think the best thing about the speakers were that they were able to have a sense of humour and prevent any boredom. Like I said the day was great aside from the that foolish man during the Q+A session. Last edited on Wednesday August 4th, 2004 21:06 by Amin

@ Amin. With regards to that guy, I did not think it was the time and place. It was not the right forum and I think he was quite rude towards the speakers by firstly saying "I expected there to be 'bigger' people here today". Perhaps he was expecting the likes of Trevor McDonald Moira Stuart, etc. Regardless, the speaker were professionals in their own right, with losts to contribute, and they also took their free time out to come along to talk. It was a big insult for him to say what he said, thats why his question was dismissed.
However I did pick up on what he was trying say in his second comment; he didn't agree with Black people and Asian being classed as one 'Black' race. I think he felt that Black people should consider themselves seperate from Asian people, because some Asian people have prejudice views against Black People. I came across an example of this a couple of weeks ago listening to Eddie Nesters chat show (I've forgotten which station, I think its Radio One). Anway, the topic was about Black Guys facing racism in Britain. An Asian guy called in and said something along the line of; Asian people were oppressed and subjected to Racisim just like blacks, however you don't get Asian boys/men living a life of drugs and crime on the street like black boys. Anyway Leo Chester((guest on the show), comedian turned Nation of Islam community leader, put him straight back in his place!!

Hey Black Beauty, not all is lost. You can always e-mail and become registered on their database. They will have other events in the future and I'm sure if you want to become a member, they would be happy to have you. Its a very good organisation which forges links for Black people who want to get into the Media industry. Their e-mail address is on the top of the page where I placed the orginal ad. I also think they have a website, however not sure what it is. Best to e-mail them, and have them send you the details directly.
Also to both of you, there is another free event this saturday which is being run by 100 black men of London. Two free film showings at Wall Museum in the city. The details are on the community thread.

Hey Amin thats nice of you to say!! Would point out something, if you do decide to go to the event on Saturday, the event is on from 1.00 - 5.00pm (door open at 12.30) and not 1.00pm - 2.00pm. Below is a copy of the orginal ad which was sent to me directly by the organiser. I think the person who posted it on the Community thread(wasnt me this time) typed in the times incorrectly.
Black History is longer than a month…
How the Past Affects the Present
Saturday 7th August
Doors open 12.30pm
Presentation 1.00-5.00pm
The 100 Black Men of London is committed to educating and informing the community about our history, much of which has been sidelined. In an effort to put black history in the mainstream we hire cinemas once a month and show positive films about our accomplishments. All such events are free. Adults, children, schools, refugees and community groups are encouraged to attend.
This screening takes place at the Museum of London, London Wall EC2. To register for your free seats and get directions visit http://www.100bmol.org.uk
The most requested films we’ve ever shown plus video clip: Somali Culture in Exile
Blue Eyed/Brown Eyed
A stunning new (2001) documentary about how white people become racist towards black people and how black people become racist against themselves. In this acclaimed workshop on prejudice blue-eyed and brow- eyed adults are treated completely differently for just two hours. At the end of the session their performance, attitudes and feelings are examined for any change.the results are amazing. Rarely shown to the general public this film clearly depicts the mental effects of being in a minority and being bombarded with negative, stereotypical images.
Rabbit Proof Fence
How would your community be affected if your children were kidnapped, taken thousands of miles from home, forced to work as a servants, and made to deny and/or dislike their skin colour, language, history and culture? Would this have any effect on a community decades later?
This actually happened to thousands of black children in Australia until the 1970’s. This is a true story of the efforts of three children who are kidnapped by the government and placed in a prison to be made into servants for white Australians. They escape, and attempt to walk 1500 miles across the desert to get back to their people. This multi-award winning drama covers themes of identity and explains why history is so important to a people.

Dear All
Re Geoff Schumann show.
I write with some regret in relation to a formal complaint about Geoff Schumann show this Saturday 17th October 2003 . I would ask that you provide me with a transcript of the show as it was in my view a very unbalanced and disturbing programme. I urge you to listen to the programme and come to your own conclusion. For my part I have, in the past raised these issues informally with Directors who have continually assured me that a more balanced approach would be take in future by Geoff. Sadly this has not materialised. I now intend to have the said show screened for balance and accuracy and will be corresponding further with you on this matter in due course. I was informed by Geoff that he had tried to contact my press office on Friday afternoon to get ' my side of the story ' I have checked with the Mayors press officers and there is no record of any such call.
I would therefore appreciate it if you could provide me with the details relating to this.
Given my own commitment to Choice FM and the fact that you are one of our principle media partners for the GLA group I am particularly disappointed that despite several informal attempts to resolve these matters no solution seems to have been found.
I suggest an urgent meeting is arranged between my office and Choice representatives at the highest level at to discuss these matters further.
Yours
Lee Jasper

Explanatory Background information:
During the week ending 17 October 2003 (the date of the broadcast referred to by Mr Jasper) it came to the attention of London's African community that an invitation that had been extended to the internationally renowned Garvey scholar, Professor Tony Martin, to speak at the Mayor of London's First Voice Conference on 24 October 2003, had been withdrawn by Mr Jasper, apparently as a result of concerns raised by the Jewish community. The "disinvitation" was reported on the front page of the Jewish Chronicle dated 16 October 2003.
The matter was raised by Mr Schumann in his weekly phone-in programme the following day in the presence of the popular edutainer, Leo Muhammad. Mr Jasper telephoned the programme live, and was unable to give either Mr Schumann or Mr Muhammad a satisfactory explanation of his actions.
For further information on this affair, please see:
http://www.blacksandjews.com/Martin.UK.Disinvitation.html
On 3 March 2004, it came to the attention of the African community that Mr Schumann had been "sacked" from his role as a presenter on Choice FM. The matter was reported by Blink ("The 1990 Trust's independent interactive site for black communities") here:
Choice DJ Geoff Schumann axed by Capital bosses
http://www.blink.org.uk/pdescription.asp?key=3007&grp=1&cat=197
The Blink / 1990 Trust report includes the following:
"Lee Jasper, chair of the National Black Alliance, said: "Geoff Schumann’s sacking is indefensible and he has my 100% personal support in what must be a difficult time for him.
"His Saturday morning show radiated both balance and maturity in addition to Geoff's sparkling personality. His unique contribution to the intellectual and political debate within the black community in London was without doubt beyond compare. His presence on London's airwaves will be sorely missed particularly by me."
The "Lee Jasper, chair of the National Black Alliance" referred to in the Blink / The 1990 Trust article is the same Lee Jasper who was formally the Director of The 1990 Trust between 1995 and 2000, as well as being Senior Advisor to the Mayor on Race Relations and Police and Policy Director Equalities & Policing and the apparent author of the email shown above. The National Black Alliance, together with The 1990 Trust, was one of a number of organisations who issued a joint statement on 27 October 2003 endorsing the decision to ban Professor Tony Martin from speaking at the conference referred to above.
(Please see
http://www.blink.org.uk/pdescription.asp?key=2654&grp=38&cat=130).
Also included in the list of organisations issuing the joint statement is Operation Black Vote, of which the same Lee Jasper is Chairman, and the National Assembly Against Racism, of which the same Mr Jasper happens to be National Secretary.
The named recipients of the email apparently authored by Lee Jasper are Patrick Berry, Neil Kenlock and Yvonne Thompson, all of whom were black directors of Choice FM between 1990 and 2004. It does not appear that the note was sent to Choice FM's white directors.
