Dragons' Den sauce hits shelves
The sauce is based on an old family recipeA chef who sang to impress investors on BBC Two's Dragons' Den has said his supermarket deal is a "dream come true" as his sauce hits the shelves.
Levi Roots, who was nominated for best reggae singer at the 1998 Mobo awards, persuaded TV entrepreneurs to invest £50,000 in his sauce-making business.
His Reggae Reggae Sauce is now on sale in 600 Sainsbury's stores.
Mr Roots, from Brixton, south London, said events since appearing on the show had been "amazing and life changing".
"The deal with Sainsbury's is a dream come true for me and my family, and seeing the sauce on the supermarket shelves is an emotional but enjoyable moment," Mr Roots added.
Dragons' Den judges Peter Jones and Richard Farley each paid Brixton-based Mr Roots £25,000 in return for a 20% stake in his company.
Record
Mr Jones said: "Levi is a great guy and he's created a great product which he is passionate about.
"I am sure this deal with Sainsbury's will be the first of many fantastic milestones on the way to business success and making his dreams a reality."
The sauce - an old family recipe - will initially be sold at more than 600 Sainsbury's stores for six months. The supermarket will also sell Mr Roots' record Proper Tings (The Reggae Reggae Sauce Song).
The sauce was previously only available on Mr Roots' website or at the annual Notting Hill Carnival.
Sainsbury's buyer Nick Paddison said the chain had been hugely impressed with the product.
"It fits perfectly with our ethos to encourage customers to try something new and our desire to help nurture smaller, niche suppliers, so we have pulled out all the stops to make it available in stores as quickly as possible," he said.

I watched the episode when he got the backing, when Theo asked him if Levi Roots was his real name, and he said "No, my real name is.....Keith!". If you've seen it you'll know what I mean.
Still think he should've asked for more, though.....

I wish him all the best in his new venture.
When I next pass through Sainsbury's I'm gonna buy one of these just to support my fellow brother.....

He desperately needs a good bath or grooming - he is selling food afer all - sorry my opinion - not too keen about the sauce for that reason.

Grooming? The man is wearing a suit!
And how does he look like he needs a bath? strange!
I will go to my local sainsbury's to buy his sauce, better than buying the normal jerk sauce made by god knows who....

EXCLUSIVE: CHASING THE DRAGONS' DEN
By Justin Penrose And Jon Kaila 29/04/2007
DRAGONS' Den star Levi Roots was once jailed for possessing heroin worth a quarter of a million pounds.
Levi, the man behind Reggae Reggae Sauce, has admitted serving two prison sentences, but says he has turned his life around thanks to his success on the BBC2 show.
The 47-year-old entrepreneur, real name Keith Graham, said: "I want kids to see me as an example of how you can turn your life around.
"As soon as I started getting all this attention, I knew someone was going to drag this up. I have gone to prison twice - but it was for nothing like armed robbery or rape or anything.
"I have never claimed to be squeaky clean. I am a Rastafarian living in Brixton - I don't have a spotless past. Is that a pre-requisite to being in trouble?
"What I did was what a great deal of black kids living in an inner city have got up to."
Levi first spent time behind bars aged 15 after mixing with the wrong crowd. He was then jailed on the drugs possession charge. The media are soooooooooo unforgiving!
Last year he found success when he convinced two of the Dragons' Den panel to put money into his venture selling the barbecue sauce - based on a recipe he learned from his gran. His unique sales pitch - he sang to the Dragons about how he wanted to "put music in your food" - made him a star and landed a £50,000 investment in his business from Richard Farleigh and Peter Jones. Within 24 hours Sainsbury's was offering to put his sauce on their shelves.
Jamaican-born Levi was brought up by his grandmother after his parents emigrated to Britain.
He came over to join his family when he was 10. "I was crying back then because I didn't want to be left behind, but I'm laughing now because it was in those years that my grandmother taught me how to the make the sauce," he said. Levi first spent time behind bars when he was 15.
He refuses to talk about the offence he committed but then stayed out of trouble and got into the music industry, earning a living as a reggae musician, performing with the likes of James Brown and Maxi Priest.
The famous Lloyd Coxsone produced his debut single. Levi said: "In 1983 I was running a youth club in Brixton and had just released a record - I was a hero around here."
However, by 1986 he was back in trouble with the police after he and two other men were caught with £250,000 worth of heroin
After his release from jail, he got back into music and in 1998 he was nominated as best reggae performer at the MOBO Awards. I heard about this
While trying to make a living as a musician, Levi sold jerk chicken and ribs on his family's stall at the Notting Hill Carnival using his grandmother's secret recipe sauce.
When he decided to sell the sauce itself at last year's carnival it was an instant success. He was spotted by researchers for Dragons' Den and asked to come on the show.
Levi said: "I have been in music all my life and made lots of friends, but there is no money in music. Now I want to concentrate on my sauce. This sauce is financial security for my family. This is a success story and I want to concentrate on the positives.
"What I did years ago is in my past and that is that."

| I didnt realise dragons den had researches that actively seek out the contestants. Makes me wonder whether some of the nervous people with not very well developed ideas would have put themselves infront of the panel without the researchers 'persuasion'.

"No my name's Keith Graham" (so funny the way he dropped that); if he did say the above quote then shame on him. I would prefer to give him the benefit and put it down to a mis-quotation, which is highly probable and most likely.
