Whats the best way of dealing with someone who's persistently, subtly, and cleverly trying to undermine you at your place of employment?

Depends but ...

First consult your worker's handbook to find out the grievience procedure.

Then try talking to them

If that dosen't work talk to his boss

If that doesn't work write to that same boss

If that doesn't work consult a higher boss.

If that doesn't work write to that same boss.

All the time, keep some sort  of diary/report of what is happening.

If all above fails, go to your union boss.

Finally a lawyer if necessary.

Le Moore..

Somebody tried this to me not recently to cover their own arse with no success...

You can choose to respond or not to respond. It is your choice not theirs. You can also choose how you respond. For example if somebody is saying things against you which is just sh*t and foolishness. Simply get on with it and if it is brought to your attention calmly point it out this is not the case. Pure evidence based tactics no emotions whatsoever.

The more they do it you repeat the process when or if it is brought to your attention. Don't go charging in anywhere wanting to see the boss. No generating emotions. Again wait and point it out and go on your business.

Some incompetent New Zealand stand in Director tried the same sh*t with my wife who is a vetrand in her job worked for the best and highly rated. Them white folkl love her because she delivers when others simply can't. Woman come and chuck all this foolishness on wifey and my wife don't ramp when she knows she is in the right and don't fear to speak.

Told her to cool down because she is dealing with a new person who is clearly racist and just deal with it as above. It did not take a wink of an eye before the big boss had that b**ch in the office and over the coals. If you are constantly saying false things on an employee and that evidence is shown. Something has got to happen. Only you can fall into their hands and let them flip the script which they love to do if you give them a sniff.

Fight smart solidier. Geoff was not wrong when he said raise your game.

For me this is a difficult one to answer without knowing something more of the relationship (e.g. relative positions in the work setup of the parties involved) and of the kind of 'techniques' use in this undermining.

The fact that it is 'subtle' would suggest that it is hard to 'prove' what is really going on, especially to those who would be looking to make an objective assessment of the situation.  However, in my own experience I have found that using 'subtle' techniques (though not necessarily exclusively) in response pays dividends.  But still it comes back to knowing something of the 'working structure' (e.g. relative power held) in order to give more tangible advice.

One thing I would say though, is that where people are trying to undermine you, it is an indication that they feel 'threatened' by you (or your position) visa vie their own position.  That usually suggest you can do 'damage' to them (or they believe you can) or have some kind of power which they need to be weary of.  Trust me this applies even if the person in question is someone who is higher up the heirarchy of management than yourself.  Their 'fear' is one of your weapon's of defence if handled correctly.

Respect

As usual great advice from the brother Fredblack niceone.gifniceone.gif

Le moore

I know I have been in situations at work myself that have tested me to the fullest even though I knew I was well on top of my game. But it's how you deal with it that makes the difference Keep calm at all times, and be concious of your tones  never take the bait or fall into any traps or you will find it all being switched onto you and them saying we had to fire him because he was agressive as often happens I have seen this happen so many times to my brothers in the workplace.

I have worked in a variety of settings and have found particularly in a corporate or government setting there tends to be a lot of office politics and corporate mind games that the ethnic Majority seem to thrive on. on top of that you have

1/ group dynamics , which can causes a clash of personalities,

2/Job insecurity which is common nowadays this tends to often put employees in a situation where they are competing to justify their existence within a company. It also puts employee's in a situation where they feel intimidated by someone who is better skilled than they are even more so if they happen to be black.

3/ And of course Racism

I am not quite sure whats going on in your particular situation but Brother FredBlack gave you some good advice there. One thing I would also like to add is to any brother or sisters who are working within the corporate or office setting is stay out of the office politics as quite often this can be a catalyst to further problems that you didn't even envisage.

I have seen it happen so many times in the office environment where the ethnic Majority in the office try  to draw black folk into their bullsh*t. My view is the only time you need get involved in office politics is if there is an issue of racism weather it's to speak up or back up another collegue who is going through it. Even then you don't go whistleblowing without your facts and documented evidence such as making a note of time date  of each incident, who was present, what happened etc . I speak as a brother who successfully sued a big company I worked for in the 80s for racism.

So don't allow yourself to fall into all those traps I see black people and I'm sorry to say this but many younger black females who are very very good at what they do on top of their game and all that. But they fall into the trap of getting involved in the office politics and find themselves left with the crap on their shoulders when all kicks off by their so called white collegues. or the ethnic Majority as I like to call them.

It almost seems as though some of them do it in order to intergrate in the office. My advice to conclude.

1/ Do your work always do a good job by paying attention to detail to eliminate mistakes.

2/stay out of any office politics if anyone asks you your opinion on bullsh*t that is floating around the office just say you are here to work and you are not intrested.

3/ minimise contact with the ethnic majority that includes after work drinks because alcohol makes you drop your guard and white people just love to be in your business so they can take it back to the office on monday.

4/above all never show all your cards in other words all of  what you know. White people are crafty they will watch you closely paying attention to detail of what you do then they will get you to train a white person so they can have your job. Again I have seen this happen.

Hope this may help someone who reads but I say it again that Fredblack gave you good advice.

Some very good tips and advice already posted.

for my tuppence worth. When I am in that situation and it happens every now again. I do the following:

A. "Hello Jack  could I have a word with you a some where private ?" Always mentioned in a crowd his or her crowd even better.

B. "Jack..........(Pause for seriousness of the word) you might not be aware of this, and I am sure you are not doing it on purpose, however when you..........................., and then.....................It gives me the impression that you are ................................ have I got that right or am I mistaken?

C. Jack "Le Moor.....you've got it all wrong ( they never admit it)or racist variation your too sensitive. Whatever their answer the response is.

D. "Ok Jack, so let me see if I have this right when you dosay............you don't mean to..................well would you mind ceasing doing that as its sending out the wrong message...........IS THAT ALL RIGHT BY YOU?

E. On leaving the private place, be seen to be (shaking hands with offender, smiling or whatever demonstrating the the issue is resolved)

usually these things can be a misunderstanding but sometimes as pointed out it's deliberate the object is to let them know that you are fully aware of what they are doing and you object therefore to continue is nothing short of an admission of provacation. niceone.gif

More importantly if they make a big thing out of the meeting you simply deny that you said such a thing:

"and by the is that what he said..........?"

What is happening exactly?

When i first joined the company  i took over this persons role and she took a lesser part time role.  There are 3 reasons i think she has started playing up. 1, There's been a lot of changes in the company and she has to reapply for her job. 2, Without bigging up...i have taken her old role to a different level and the rewards have been evident. 3, Ive been given the nicest office in the building and this pisses her off i think.

Im sure she wants her old job back as recently shes been harping on about how interesting the role is. She has also probably figured if i leave etc she wont have to worry what will happen to her.

One of her recent tricks was she tried selling a dumb idea to our boss that i would be better off upstairs sitting in an open plan office and we use my office for some other role. Fortuanetly i won this battle but what did my head in was that my boss actually entertained the idea. My job comes with an office thats just how it is. Every other advisor in the company has an office, yet they were toying with the idea of kicking me outside. Either that or they just waanted to see my reaction. I just gave them a puzzled look and let them know with this expression that i thought her idea was absurd.

Shes started doing other things which subtley undermine my position, but up until now i havent done anything. Its not critical with her at'll and ive probably made it sound worse than what it really is but i know that sometimes these things have a habit of growing.
