The Voice to be sold to rival ethnic publisher
Posted 18 December 2003 07:00 GMT
The Voice: being sold after 21 years
The owners of The Voice newspaper have agreed to sell the title to its rival, the Ethnic Media Group, in a deal worth between £5m and £10m.
Media Week has learned that an agreement has been reached “in principle” with the McCalla family – which founded The Voice 21 years ago – and EMG, which publishes New Nation, African Times, Caribbean Times, Asian Times and Eastern Eye.
Contracts are expected to be finalised within the early part of the new year.
While there was some question this week as to how far negotiations had progressed, EMG chairman Gurmeet Khangura confirmed the parties were in due diligence.
The McCalla family started The Voice in 1982 and have since turned the newspaper into one of the most successful titles targeting an ethnic community in the UK, with sales of 44,000 newspapers a week.
The rest of the portfolio includes Woman to Woman, a monthly supplement, and Young Voices, a standalone monthly magazine.
However, The Voice will be in direct competition with the New Nation title, although EMG insisted this week that the two newspapers could be positioned alongside each other in the same market.
New Nation has yet to have an audited circulation figure published by the Audit Bureau of Circulation.
The Government has used The Voice for recruitment advertising campaigns in recent years, running ads for the police and the armed forces.

The Voice to be sold to rival
THE VOICE newspaper is to be sold to its main rivals according to a report today, raising questions over the paper's future.
Media Week has reported that black newspaper The Voice have agreed to sell the title to its rival, the Ethnic Media Group (EMG), who publish the rival New Nation.
With both papers aiming at a very similar market, the report is bound to spark speculation over long term future for The Voice, whose sales have declined by around two thirds from a peak of 60,000 in the mid-1980's.
In media terms, it is the equivalent of The Mirror buying The Sun or vice versa. Questions will inevitably be asked about how one media owner can run two titles with the same target audience.
Media Week reports that The Voice will be ‘in direct competition' with New Nation, but says "EMG insisted this week that the two newspapers could be positioned alongside each other in the same market."
Earlier this year the Jamaican Gleaner published an article claiming it was in buy-out talks with a British newspaper, believed to be The Voice. The Guardian also carried an article on the Gleaners' bid quoting Voice insiders.
However insiders say the Gleaners valuation of £4.5m was topped by EMG who offered a million more. The extra cash is thought to have found favour with The Voice's owner Linda McCalla, wife of the late founder of the paper Val McCalla.
The Voice is not the only part of the ethnic media to be the subject of speculation this year. Choice FM were brought out by Capital Radio last month for £11m, prompting fears over whether Capital would demand a change in Choice FM's output.
Capital have been edging towards soft ‘urban' music in recent times, rather than pure pop. There are fears that Capital will bring a hard-nosed profits drive which would see popular DJ's axed.
So far those fears have not materialised, but media watchers are keeping a close eye on developments.

Traitors to the cause! What do you expect. Loyalty to the community? What does uncle Tom and Auntie Tom know about loyalty and responsibility to the black community. Nothing! Absolutely nothing!
This is one of the reasons why i find it very difficult to support any up and coming black owned enterprises. Because, as soon as they make it, they will immediately sell us out to the nearest white person or Asian person who happens to be passing by. All in the name of profit! And they couldn't care less!

| This is very unfortunate, the death of a Big Voice in the black community. Isn't their any alternative?

Bonn said This is one of the reasons why i find it very difficult to support any up and coming black owned enterprises.
At least you should support them while they represent you and once they sell out, find another genuine one.

The Voice was a noble idea. But over the years it really went down the tubes.
It's normal for business t sell out to a larger concern. That is business.
What is needed is a Good Black\African Paper that can lift the Black Community.
