Recently Tesco announces record £2bn profits
http://tinyurl.com/3pooj
They certainly never miss an opportunity. The Tesco Express stores have even taken the last fragments of business from many of the small shopkeepers. If local authorities refuse permission for such stores, Tesco appeal and with professional representation usually win!
Having said that,Given that grocers have in the last decade switched from increasing profits by increasing margins to increasing profits by increasing the volume of what they sell (witness the decline/stability of profit margins and the increasing number of BOGOF-type offers) are the real 'sinners' the people who shop at such stores?
Is it time to re-think the paradigm of 'everyday low prices' and 'roll-backs' and accept that if people want farmers and suppliers to get a fairer reward then they must begin to accept higher prices for their food?

| On a matter of principle it would be a cold day in hell before I shop in Tesco's, apart from its origins, I take exception to the Heiress getting away from paying back the money she stole from council tax payers of Westminster...

| I have no idea, but not impressed with the way they shut down local village High Streets when they come to town

@kunjufu
caught bits of "Tonight With Trevor McDonald" and they covered some of the Tesco advertising tactics.
One is to have an item at for example £1.40, raise it to £3.00 for a month, then cut it back to £1.50 then next month with a sign saying "50% Off!" - what a bargain at 10p dearer, eh?
Another is to advertise something like "£10 million slashed off our store prices!", but they actually cut the prices of champagne, organic water cress etc while raising the costs of biscuits, beans etc.
So they make you think you're getting a good deal when perhaps you're not. To be honest, most people shop in a supermarket that's more convenient for them.
@cashmoney
do you remember back in the day, Tesco was as classy as Lidl is nowadays?

What are tesco's origins? I heard it was a ' stack 'em high, sell 'em cheap' motto.
@coltrane
You are right. People shop there because it gives people what they want at low prices, but especially if tesco is thier nearest store, which is likely, given the rate they wish to build.
Many don't realise the con tricks supermarkets play, except the very poor.
However, it would become very hard to be completely ethical when shopping, if Tesco's stranglehold grows.

@Coltrane
I watched that programme it makes me sick to the teeth the profit Tesco is reaping in, but in all fairness they are not the only ones playing that dirty cutting prices and special offers game all major supermarkets do it. I despise these big players that have cut out the small independent stores who provide quality and customer care and satisfaction.
But I was happy to see the comparision done between tesco and buying from a street market but not all street market has good fruit and veg they are usually at the "must eat now" stage when you buy from them.
But tesco is taking the piss we have Tesco Superstore Tesco Express Tesco Metro I mean jeese whats that all about......not to mention the prices in the express and metro are more expensive than the superstore....and they dominate areas. Sainsbury is playing that same game too...last week driving from vauxhall bridge and around victoria I saw 2 sainsburys all not to far from each other.
I hear what your saying about supporting local trade but for me its quality at the end of the day and I shop in non UK supermarkets such as Aldi and Lidl for basics as their quality is better than some of the big chain stores (as I mentioned in another thread) and then I go to farmers markets for organic stuff. Then if all fails I go to one of the money pinching stores such as Tesco sainsbury or Asda.

She was trying to claim that she didn't have as much money as everyone thought she had, but I'm sure she lost the appeal and I think she's got to pay up. But then again, she could keep appealing I suppose and they would never get it back.

I do know that Morrisons which just absorbed Safeways, up until recently used to have the Confederate flag as their logo and on their carrier bags..........that sh*t is deep.

@mafdet
Supermarkets have their place but now they are taking over where they stopped in the 1960's. Taking the last vestige of bread from the mouth of the small local shopkeeper.
In my area, Tesco are developing a satellite series of Tesco Express stores within half a mile of the Town Centre. They are taking the livelihoods of the small shop and adversely affecting the situation for the Town Centre supermarkets.
A study conducted for the local authority indicated that if the Town Centre supermarkets close, this will have an adverse knock on effect upon the other larger stores. Opportunist purchasing of luxury goods takes place whilst shopping. We are then left with charity shops.

| Maybe Tesco's 'success' is down to the use of poverty wages, they mostly employ South African women.
